Hence "changing a baby." That's not frequent or typical, so it seems strange if people get supremely pissed about losing 2 minutes of xp, once in a 3-4 hour period. Some other jerk is going to go eat, smoke, bail, etc. eventually anyway.

You haven't partied with too many people using that excuse have you. The person changing the baby is more often then not the person currently caring for said baby. As in, changing it is not the only thing they have to do to it.

It's never just for 2 minutes every few hours. It's frequent, for long periods of time and no matter how pissed I get over it, they get more so because someone had the gall to kick them over it and find someone reliable.

When it's your turn to watch the damn kid, don't waste 5 other peoples time by partying with them.

I am the guy changing the baby. But, that should be an atypical experience. Only if the baby wakes up to cry over a dirty diaper (atypical as well; they'll sleep on with some steamers in the crock pot). If the baby is not asleep, I'm not playing.

The underlined part is key. If I don't have time for xping, completely untethered, I don't do it. If you don't believe me, look at my horrendously low levels.

I guess in a way, you're right. I've never heard somebody else give that excuse, much less use it repeatedly for long stretches of time.

You're kind of missing the point. "Changing the baby" is an infrequent experience, sure. I don't think there's anyone that can dispute that. But it's the fact that it's that on top of a ton of other distracting shit, as you've detailed.
I know a lady who plays, and will stop to change the kid. Ten minutes later, stop to feed the kid. Five minutes later, stop to soothe the crying child. Eight minutes later, stop to get her child who's wandered toward the toilet bowl in absence of her mother's supervision. Twenty minutes later, top for a full ten to twenty minutes to put the baby to sleep.
The numbers are subjective and the frequency of incidents vary, but it's shit like this that can lengthen a ZM 8 run from 45 minutes to a 2 hour ordeal.

I know two kids in particular. Bitch and moan and /sh for experience party. Ten minutes into it, stop for five to help their parents with the incoming groceries. 15 minutes later, stop for another six to argue with their parents about cleaning their room. 8 minutes later, break for ten(or longer) to do their chores. 10(or more) later, break for another 20 to run an errand for said parents. End the night with a "Do you guys mind waiting for me? I gotta go eat dinner with my family. I'll be back in about in a half-hour."
Or "Hey, um, my parents are bugging me to go to bed, so I'll just fake 'em out and I'll be back in ten 'kay?"
          ...
          ...
...Sure kid, come back when you have a job, your own place, and CAN WIPE YOUR OWN ASS.

Again, frequency of said incidents vary, but usually I put up with this more than the "busy parent," who usually know well enough not to burden other people when they have a child present.

It's reached the point where I've taken a harsh view toward minors, feeling that you should only be playing if you pay your own subscription and have your own place.

I didn't miss what Mhurron was saying. I just had no idea that there were so many irresponsible parents trying to play FFXI when they should be caring for their kids. When somebody uses "changing the baby" as an umbrella meaning "I'm too selfish to just put down my damn game and let your party be," that's complete crap. The kid teetering toward the toilet...sheesh.

But this quote is WAY more in line with crap I've dealt with while trying to accomplish something. I've seen a lot of snot nosed kids, acting as such, effing up my PT. Now that, I'm familiar with.

Well, the "irresponsible parent" isn't quite as prevalent as the "snot nosed kid," but occurs often enough to get a mention. Like I said, most are wise enough to know better(and sometimes, emergencies will come up in-party. Baby will wake up unexpectedly, take a bad fall... shit happens, I dig that), but every now and again, you get the ones that make you wonder if they were really ready for parenthood...

                Re: Job "Personality" Categories

I'm going to have to agree with the issue of frequency. There's a difference between being AFK once in a while for something like taking care of a kid, or doing a QUICK (5 minute) errand for the family. When it becomes afking every 10 minutes, I'd sooner play with 5 than let the 6th leech and diminish exp.

Besides, I get more annoyed with "AFK for a smoke" people a bit more, usually because it takes them upwards of 10 minutes to smoke a damned cigarette. I know some people don't like to smoke inside their house, but this still gets seriously annoying.

Really, there are really only 3 things I don't get somewhat annoyed about people going AFK for:

                1) Bathroom
                2) Food/Drink (Not leaving for 10 minutes to eat with the family. Getting a snack or a glass of water is more what I have in mind here)
                3) Those rare issue that must be dealt with (Kid issues, making/taking phone calls, answering the door, etc.)

Thats only because more children play games endlessly then adults do, but self absorbed children grow up to be self absorbed adults and they don't automatically get a clue when they become pregnant. There are just as many snot nosed brats as there are irresponsible parents in the world, you just have a slightly higher chance of meeting the brat in an MMO.

What crawled up your ass? Uncivil and uncalled for. The playerbase of FFXI is hardly a realistic representative cross-section of the rest of the world.

me too :D At this point in the game, I want a job that's heavily armored (war/pld/drk/bst all stuck out at me due to their equip lists) but can solo well. But then... I hate that Bsts sit around and hide behind pets (pets that get shot by your magic hearts, no less). So errr I'm leveling Marksmanship.

I fall under Pet-Friendly. :p Summoner is my first job up. Dragoon will be my next. And probably Puppetmaster and/or Beastmaster following. o.O

And while my boyfriend and I game together, we don't sit around in exp making our characters 'stare' at one another. I think the closest we come to that in any situation is sitting side by side when one or both is afk, or when we're bored and find a nice place to sit and watch the world pass. Usually the top of Drachenfalls out in Gustaberg. Days like that we dunno what to do, not in an exp mood, but we want to play the game, so we sit and chat with the LS and sit on the waterfall. Nothing too pretentious there. And no random silly emotes. Sunrise/set is pretty out there.

It's also a matter of free time. Parents usually realize "Hey, I got a kid, I'm not gonna be able to play this here game like I want." They limit their play time accordingly, and simply don't get in others' ways when they think they themselves will be interrupted.
The snot nosed kid has yet to fully understand consideration for time management and courtesy(among other things), and so he takes advantage where he feels it does him good.
