Re: Do You Think there will be another Expansion for FFXI? If so...
Yeah, expansions will keep coming until one of two things happen. The playerbase dwindles to low to keep a support and development team working on it or they truely run dry on ideas. Just look at other MMOs like AO, EQ, Lineage, and many others. EQ tosses out expansions like it's candy (I'm already 2 expansions behind on them about to be 3 soon), AO does is almost at the same pace, FFXI has a nice paced 1 per year going. So potential to go for a while seems like it's there.
For the comment on EQ, it has changed a good deal model wise. The engine actually hasn't changed at all just they upped the polygon count on the models. You see evidence of this by how well EQ handles all that is going on the screen compared to an actual newer engine. The newer engine is able to handle the TnL, high polygons, and other related items without taxing your system as badly.
I mean mine with full effects is able to handle FFXI flawlessly without any latency issues, however it gets taxed hard in EQ by just having detailed shadows (Something FFXI does effortlessly).
Theoretically it would be possible for SE to expand the lockers but there is a huge price for it. That price is performance, right now as they've been working on and getting it to the performance vs. quality are budding pretty close to eachother with the PS2. If you up the storage this would mean for the game to handle it they'd have to drop the icon quality and likely be an icon that is less identifiable.
On top of this is not only the textured images but just the flat out data it's receiving and processing. It's still possible by just limiting how fast a person can get through a list and then having limited info of the list preloaded and call the rest as it gets closer to needing. Put on top have it clearing to a more skeletal the data it's already passed off the screen and you can up the inventory a lot more but. In both cases though you are sacrificing something performance or quality.
