Re: Could banning Gilsellers actually damage our economy?

Honestly, I think everything's going to work itself out. Maybe I'm just being naively optimistic, but while prices fluctuated madly after the RMT bannings, things have started to stabalize again (granted, at a much lower price) on Fairy server. I can't comment on the high level "uber" gear (cause I have nowhere near the bankroll to even be looking at that stuff yet), but I haven't heard too much complaining from the 75's in my ls about gear prices. Prices on gear have dropped a lot recently, obviously, but they aren't too concerned about it. I work with a few peeps in my linkshell irl, and after the bannings and the bottoming out of the economy, we talked about it at length a few times. They agree it sucks that gear they spent millions on before is worth half what it was before, but to quote a friend "It's not like I'd sell it anyway, I worked to damn hard to get it in the first place". If anything, they're excited, because now they're picking up even more uber gear for much less then they would have paid before. So from the big ballers persepective, they don't care much. If anything, it's made them not sit on their money like they used to before and dump it back into the economy.

I can see from a crafter/farmer's perspective how the current down-turn in the economy would be pretty disheartening. I mine a lot, and ore prices have dropped a ton, Darksteel's used to net me 20k in profit and now I'm lucky if I get 13k. Of course I'm irritated by that; I'm not building a bankroll like I was before. On the flipside, though, there isn't nearly as much competition in Yughott as there was when I first started going down there, so the drop in price for ores is balanced out for me somewhat by the fact that I'm spending much less time running around looking for mining points that aren't already claimed. I don't have any hard figures (never really attempted to quantify it before) but I would bet that if I broke it down to gil/hour I'm making close to what I was making pre-banning. Of course, it's hard to compare, as some days I get 3-4 darksteels or golds down there and some days I get crap, but all in all it's not really something I stress about. If anything it's made mining less of a chore then before.

One thing S-E needs to focus on is getting new players into the game (there are so many peeps that I work with that ditched ffxi for WoW it's ridiculous), and I think that the drop in the economy actually helps keep new players playing, which is definitely a good thing with how bad it's getting trying to find mid-level players to party with nowadays. When I started playing stuff was ridiculously inflated, and if it wouldn't have been for the money I made bazaaring eggs during the Egg-stravaganza I probably would have gotten frustrated and quit. Someone that's just started playing probably isn't going to be enthused by the fact that they have to farm crystals for weeks to buy their level 7 gear, and I bet ffxi lost a lot of new players due to that seemingly endless grind for gil. With an influx of new legitamate players comes an influx of people selling those low-level items on ah, so the people that don't want to spend the time farming sheepskins will still have plenty of lowbies supplying them.

Right now, while the economy is still somewhat in a state of disarray, the general trade of goods is going to screwed up. But I'm confident it will work itself out eventually. Crafting will still be a pain with return on investment dropping, but from what the high level crafters in my ls have told me, crafting was always an expensive hobby.

Despite what happened to the economy in the short term, I'm still confident that removing the rmt's was a good thing in terms of game balance and playability, and those are the things S-E needs to focus on the most if they're going to attract new players.
I'm a slow motion accident, lost in coffee rings and fingerprints...

Re: Could banning Gilsellers actually damage our economy?

There are two effects I can see that gil sellers have on FFXI.

      1. 24/7 control over niches that can be sold on the AH.
Niches like H.E.L.M, item drops(like sheep skiin or Jujitsu Gi), BCNM, crafting etc

      2. Control of a servers gil.
Selling supplies on the AH then taking that gil off the market till someone spends real life money on it then the money is put back on the market.

Now is all the gil sellers that Square is getting rid of mostly just ones that have gil or is it also ones that control niches. If they just get rid of gil then the econimy will tank and in a year will be back to the same place we started at because the gil sellers will still have control of the niches, which is their base.

It they ban the gil seller bots that control niches and keep them gone, over times legit players will come in and take over. But many players can live in a niche so a balance will be meet on what the items are being sold at. So that they can all make a decent amount of gil to get by on, not the razor thin margins that a gil seller can get by on, with the added effect of blocking out all other players.

Then over time as players take over the farming base, hopefully a balance will be meet for crafters so that even pre-60 crafters can make a living. Because there would be a void they would come into.

I think the total loss of gil sellers will make the game tank for about two months then players will take over and things will balance out a lot. And people won't have to live on very small margins like you have to do now on a lot of things if you want to compete. And the game will be less in control by the whims of a few.

      @Pawkeshup
People are short sighted, they like big numbers in general. Not how much gil do you have vs the rest of the server. What would you want more.

3gil for you vs 10gil total for everybody else.
      or
10,000 for you vs 100,000 total for everybody else.

Also gil move between very few hands can be just as bad as gil not moving at all when you consider the server as a hole.

If this was on another forum there would be about ten more pages to this thread but it would all be just flaming and it would be locked

Yes, your right, but...it only applies to the newer people moving up to the ladder based on their income. Basically like all of us that have been playing for awhile, this was like a stock market crash. All Higher end armor has always been called an "investment". Well my invested just got flushed. So I was well of - farmed/gardened about 13-15mil total back when I bought all my blm equipment.

*off subject* pissed me off again Philomanth Stole:
        Paid: 800k
sells for now: 5-6k on Caitsith

Ok, now back on subject. Now all the time and gil is basically gone and not recoverable, so I wasted months. It is a great Stock Market Crash, and hopefully like the U.S. we will come out of this in better shape.

          Well...

... if you wanna know something scary, this past weekend being in Jeuno or Whitegate, I've heard GS spamming sales for Seiryu Kote, Byak's Haidate, and alot of other uber SKY stuff. There we even spamming about selling Abjurations.... which..... what's up with that? lol something change? (haven't been paying attention much to the end-game changes)

I was even in a xp pt for my SMN and some pt member had his friend come PL us in Valkurm. I was teasing the PL, commenting how well he did he should charge a fee and he instantly spammed me with a sales pitch about how he could get me any SKY item I wanted for a price. It made me lolzz0rz.

          Fun stuff.

Even Sky items are taking a hit. I think another contributing factor to the absolute crash of BLM gear is...TP burns of course:

no invites = less people wanting to play the job = no one needs the armor.

But that is a different subject for a different thread.

That's not really so new. GS have been selling that stuff for a while now. People pay them for the item and then get into the party to lot for it.
