Why Don't You Logout Before Maintenance?

Just tried to login to the game again cause I haven't played for 2-3 days, then I suddenly found the "PLAY" button on the login screen unuseable, and realised that FFX is undergoing maintenance.

I've read the info and have an idea what is being worked on, but anyway....
a couple of seconds later, a question came to mind, and I'm wondering why.

When you're ingame and you know there is going to be maintenance, there is always a messge that pops up in the chat window from SE giving you a warning to logout from the game for this process to happen.

I presume it is vital that you really MUST logout at these times, and I always feel prompted in forcing myself to do so too. The first couple of times I did do this, but then later on I began seeing that not all players were logging out from the game at maintenance times, and were still in the game, even after the warning.

So I'm just wondering......
is there anyone here who stays in the game until you are automatically kicked out for maintenance, and why do you do it instead of logging out as soon as you get the warning message?

Most of the people who don't logout are afk, for instance the bazaar swarm in Rolanberry Fields.

The only reason I log out is to preserve any macros that I've made. I hate having to redo them if I lose my connection.

I dont log out if I was doing something or going somewhere just to save time if I have time. I didnt get chucked until 5:30pm today when maint started at 5:00pm. Now I am at the ??? for my NM when I get back on w/e that may be. Never lost any items or had anything go wrong yet after 3-4 years of doing so.

I imagine the reason they say that you may lose items is if it kicks you out during a synth, using an item, or after trading a pop item. Only thing that makes sense to me.

It always struck me as more of a CYA (Cover Your Butt) thing than anything else. Nothing should happen, but you never know, and SE does not want to be blamed for it. I can see the chances of something bad happening being much greater when doing the things you listed though.

I was mostly thinking the NM pop item thing. Let's say I had an Odorous Knife +1 to pop the Uggalepih Pendant mob. I would be ticked if I popped him just to be kicked a minute into it. I'd have no Knife and no Uggalepih Pendant.

I'm certain that the instances of people losing items/exp etc. due to maintenence are very, very minimal in the last few years, although I'm sure they warn you just so you can't blame them if it happens. If you choose not to log out before the servers kick you out and you come back missing an item you had just obtained, you can't really be like "Well you have to fix this!"

They can pretty much just put it on you with a "told you so, now please go away."

I stay until kicked because I don't care enough to log out early.

Okay, so basically they tell you to logout for your own benefit, and not theirs. Or is there anything that could go wrong for SE if you don't logout when you are warned to do so?

No. If there was any chance that something could go wrong for SE, they would force everyone to log out before the servers go down.
