  • New Faces and Hair Styles! Races? I'd pay for another character!

Edit/Update: I was naive earlier in my post. Although I do know several Galkas at 75 who wish to make tarus etc.

A Hairstyle salon would be great. Limit changes to be made and or a quest. (and a mood system displaying better facial expressions and emotes) Thanks to MaverickDFZ.

Icemage's statement below was something I was unaware and glad to hear of.

"Square-Enix has stated in the past that the limits on the number of hairstyles/faces/etc. is due in large part to the limitations of the PlayStation 2 hardware. Since the game must run smoothly on all supported platforms, this means no such upgrades are likely until and unless Square-Enix withdraws support for the PS2 version and/or starts directly supporting the PlayStation 3." - Icemage

As for "This is essentially impossible, as it would destroy almost the entire current base plotline." by Yeargdribble. Yes and No. Square Enix could think of something with a new expansion.

"some people would be pissed that SE only recently created a race that would be superior for their job choice" by Yeargdribble. Not necessarily
superior, but on par, just different. And Yes, I believe there should have been more character creation features in the beginning. It's becoming an older MMO.

Many of my friends who I have tried convincing to play FF XI with me have disliked the poor character creation options and comment how W.o.W. is so much better on these kind of things. (Trying to bring the greatness of FF XI to many friend who play W.o.W.) Most newer people wish for more customization, to make there character unique. I just want the game to continue to be appealing to new users or future users.

And I do now realize that allot of these features are halted because of PS2 compatibility now, thanks to Icemage, but I am looking forwards to the future of FF XI and I hope there will be more options in the future.\

"The good news is that FFXI does work on the PlayStation 3. The bad news is that there aren't enough PS3s in circulation yet to justify this sort of platform shift (yet). Once that happens, it would not surprise me to see something like this happen." - Icemage

I don't why know why SE has not added any more hairstyles and faces. Everyone in my Link shell agreed that If FF XI had released newer faces and hair styles they would create a new character and SE would make plenty of money out of it. If Just 10% of the population made new character there would be a flood of new characters and money for SE!

They could also add a race or two. Seeing how W.o.W. (which i wont ever talk about again X.x) is going to hit it off well with added character races, it would be very nice to have a new selection. Again, more people would be interested in playing FF XI more, or for the first time, and SE can only benefit. Sure there would be lots of updates, fixes, and adjusting, but its well worth it. In such a vast crazy world it would be nice to have some customization besides armor (until everyone wares the same amazing armor).

Well Thats just me thoughts. Who knows? next Expansion?

Unlike WoW, most people don't have several characters they play and actively work on. They may have mules, but the way the mules look isn't that imortant. Most people who've been playing for a long time aren't likely to start over just to have a different face.

This is essentially impossible, as it would destroy almost the entire current base plotline. Also, this being a game where a person works generally on a single character, some people would be pissed that SE only recently created a race that would be superior for their job choice. People just wouldn't want to start over.

It's not like WoW where you take a character to max level in 3 months or so and then start a new one. Most people in FFXI invest more into their character and have far more attachment to them.

The amount of time that I have spent taking one job to 75, another to 60 with intentions of taking it to 75 and several leveled subjobs, mission progress, quests completed, fame raised and the time raising crafts to make gil means there is no way I would spend time creating another character just for a different look.

I doubt I'm alone in that thinking, and that does ignore the problems with the existing storyline and the world of FFXI that has been created as stated above.

And all of these reasons agains this idea are exactly why i suggested a salon type system in game where you could take your player and have a hairstyle change etc even unlocking new hairstyles over time.

Ontop of this, some sort of mood system underneeth to change your face from happy to angry(being WHM or BLM alike) would allow you to change your CURRENT character...

This is one thing I would defenately like to have added. I don't really care about anything else because I'm happy with being a Tarutaru, but new hairstyles would be so awesome.

A new race would destroy several parts of the plot. Don't believe me? Play Rise of Zilart and Chains of Promathia missions. This game is too heavily based on story for them to go "oh lets just change it" without pissing off a LOT of people.

I agree that a new playable race would change too many of the game's dynamics and story for it to be a viable option.... Even when considering the opening movie about the great war comprised of the five races and beastmen. Unless the race were a newly 'discovered' race found in one of the far off lands somewhere... But it would be hard to work it into the current storyline, too many things would have to change, or else the new race wouldnt really fit in anywhere story wise...

However, I think that new character models would be great... Or just an option for different hair. I really wanted long hair for my elvaan female, as in long past the shoulders. *sigh* maybe one day

I agree that the ability to change the appearance of your current character slightly would be nice. I personally hate that I can't see a ton of headgears on my taru because of the shaggy hair. However, if SE made it a function where you had to start a new character to get it, most people would say EFF THAT!

I don't buy the claim that more faces and hairstyles could be added due to the "limitations of the PS2. Were that the case, just the fact it had to load a new zone would make the whole thing collapse.

Of course, things between Sony and SE haven't been quite the same since that whole HDD thing Sony failed to support, much less promote.

                      {Mithra} {Man} {Can I have it?}

Seriously, I like the Elvaan, but if male Mithra had been available I would have been all over it and never looked back. SE could easily circumvent the story issues of this with a new expansion, perhaps by unlocking the Mithran home land.

I have no problem with having Male Mithran NPCs, but not playable races. That completely goes against the history of the Mithra. We know there are male Mithra out there, but are not the adventuring type. If they allowed us to play as Mithran males, that would change that adventuring thing straight away.

So unlock their homeland, and allow us to go and do quests and stuff for them, but keep Manthra's at home!

Well as far as adding new races (Looking at future since really right now it isn't likely as long as PS2 is supported) you look at the results of this type of effect from Everquest.

When EQ first started out it also was only like 4-5 races, then they introduced more and more. The most recent are the Drackons (ms?), Humans that have been reborn with dragon blood. It was taking current state of the game and progressing an alternate storyline.

As far as the playerbase they didn't seem to take it harshly they pretty much embrassed the addition. Many with maxed out characters even created another character just to be this new race. So the potential isn't out of the question.

They could do it in a variety of ways, even some that would probably be less intrusive. Like say if they wanted to add a bunny like race, with all the crystals floating around and ones that transport you as well as seeing as what happened with an ancient race being transformed into tonberri's there is potential to add in special crystals and such that would allow a 1 time race change (Not gender though since this could create complications in the game's design).

The only thing though that would be wierd to me is having an already established culture suddenly change. In particular I am stating the whole thing of Male Mithra, that race already has a culture and behavior to just suddenly change it would be wierd.

Re: New Faces and Hair Styles! Races? I'd pay for another character!

Don't really see the point of a new race.

                              Taru - Stong with magic
Mithra - High DEX and AGI, all arounder
                              Hume - All arounder
Elvaan - Highest STR and VIT
Galka - high STR, Highest HP

If they were really going to do new playable races, I'd personally want to see the beastmen playable than some random, new race. Imagine just starting out starting out as a Yagudo MNK in Giddeus and working your way up into working into the ranks with the Yagudo in Castle Oztroja.

Imagine trying to get into Jeuno only to be run out by the guards, but finding acceptance in places like Al'Zahbi. Beastmen could live on a totally different path from the other races, diffent objectives and the choice to stay a Child of the Twilight or ally with the Children of Altana.

They could add a whole faction thing if you wanted to go good. And if not, you could go EXP on some smoothskins maybe. They could have this whole faction and PVP thing (it'll never happen, but I can dream.)

Male mithra? no, just no. NPC, maybe, not playable. Its been established there are few male mithra born and blah blah blah. A sudden rise in male mithra goes against what we already know. Don't see the need, if you want to play a male, there were three other races that had them, you picked a catgirl "for the stats."

I picked the catgirl because I don't like looking at a man's virtual ass on my free time, it had nothing to do with stats.
