  • Re-arrangeing magic list

Ok, so my magic list is a mess and I would like to organize it my way - have all the Cure's first, Dia I next to Dia II, all the EN spells grouped, etc etc.

    Can I do this?

Also, what is the diff between Phalanx and Stoneskin coz they both just absorb damage from a formula based on Enhancing Magic skill...

    I CANT FIND PHALAX ANYWHERE!!

Go to menu, Ability's then Magic and you can manually arrange them. Need to press + on the numpad to select the option to manually arrange them once your in Magic.

Phalanx and Stoneskin are the same, they just absorb dif amounts I think. (Stoneskin absorbs Magic and Physical attacks and I think phalanx only absorbs Physical)

Phalanx comes only from BCNM. You cannot purchase it from vendors. Buy it from the Jeuno AH.

        Phalanx negates damage, Stoneskin absorbs damage, i.e;

If you cast Stoneskin, it acts as an extra HP bar. If hte stoneskin amount is for say, 350 damage, You won't recive any damage untill that 350 HP is used up.

On the other hand, Phalanx is damage migitation. If you cast Phalanx for say 20, 20 damage of all attaks will be negated untill the effect wears off.

Phalanx and Stoneskin work different, even though they are both used to mitigate damage.

Phalanx cuts an amount of damage from attacks you get for a set amount of time, Stoneskin absorbs an amount of damage and wears off after that damage is absorbed.

If a mob is hitting you for 70 dmg, Phalanx would make it say 55 or something (depending on your skill) on every attack till it wears off. Now say your Stoneskin can absorb 200 dmg, in this case you would get hit 2 times for 0 and then take 10 damage the 3rd time, then you'd have to recast.

Both complement each other to make a great defense, and if you add Fast Cast to the mix you can see why RDM is good at surviving things that can easily kill most jobs. And that's without even considering what you can get from your sub.

Phalanx/Stoneskin combo is great for activities where you plan to be the center of the mobs attention. With Ninja sub, especially, you'll want to have this pair of spells up--it stretches out the time you're "invulnerable" so that if you're recast timer on Utsusemi is ticking away, you might end up with a few spare seconds to throw up your shadows, and then reapply stoneskin. Phalanx is one of the Red Mage only spells--it's not needed in most parties, but I know that most RDMs like to solo, myself included, and it's one of my favorite spells.

As far as rearranging your magic list, I used to manually sort it, but new spells always appear at the bottom and then you have to spend a good long while repositioning everything. The manual sort function for spells is sub-par. I just hit my list with a + Auto-sort whenever I read scrolls (learn a BLU). It does a decent job. My suggestion is to get used to the auto-sort's order rather than get the list used to you.

I generally use auto-sort myself, but lately, I've found an annoyance in the way it acts (I can find annoying aspects of nearly anything though ).

Normally, Auto Sort will group spells by type, IE: All of the Shellra spells in one place, all of the Curaga in another, ect.... BUT it does not put all of the Teleport Spells together, which annoys the hell out of me. I use teleportation macros, but I still find it annoying and I can't think that SE did it just to annoy those with OCD.

I Auto-sort as my default and then just place the Spells I'm gonna use more often and that don't require gear swaps like Dia or Bio for whatever I'm doing at the time.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, Phalanx doesn't really get good until higher levels when your Enhancing skill comes up anyway (it reduces damage taken by 1 for every 10 full points of Enhancing skill you have, so at 157 skill you'd get -15 damage for instance).

There's one up for sale in Jeuno on Bahamut as we speak. If you're able to log in right now, you should be able to get it.

                        Use macros. ^^

Magic list order becomes much less important.

Of course, there's always those spells that you forget to macro or rarely use...
