  • Always bring a gimpy weapon for skill up alliance

... unless you plan to tank. If you use a decent weapon, you may find yourself pulling hate off of party members who are 7 levels higher than you.

I was killing time the other night when I noticed a 200-250 skill up party being organized. My GAxe skill at 225 as a 68 WAR was still a good 16 skill levels below my cap, so I decided to join. The alliance of around 10 players had multiple 74+ WAR/NINs and an /anon PLD. The PLD was actually being controlled by the 70 WHM who headed up the alliance. The PLD was using Savage Blade, so I'm guessing he was 71+.

The plan was for the PLD to tank the mobs, even though he was being controlled by the only mage in our alliance. I'm guessing that guy had his hands full trying to tank and main heal himself at the same time.

So anyway, here I am as a 68 WAR/WHM (the only melee who came with a mage sub ), sacrificing some key +acc slots by wearing +MP gear, rarely casting anything during fights, and I'm still pulling hate here and there. My downfall was probably the fact that I was using Heavy Darksteel Axe, a lvl 59 weapon with decent dmg. If only I had held onto that Neckchopper...

The highlight of the night was when I pulled hate against an Elder Goobbue, and he decided to use his TP right at that second, resulting in a 1032 damage Beatdown. It's quite amazing seeing your life bar go from full to 0 like that. I don't think I got any sympathy from anyone in the alliance. The only comment I even saw was "wow, 1032 dmg".

Moral of the story: in a pick up alliance for skill ups, no one is going to care enough about you to voke the mob. And they won't care that you're eating dirt. So do yourself a favor and bring a mid level weapon with low damage, low delay, and preferrably +acc.

There's another reason not to use a strong weapon - the less damage you deal to the enemy, the more time you can spend hitting it instead of hunting for a new target. I usually insist that anyone coming to a skillup party bring a very weak weapon so we can just sit and beat on the same monster.

P.S. Who the heck skills up on Goobues in Boyahda when there are perfectly usable Steelshells a stone's throw away in the lake who hit for a lot less damage?

We ended up pulling a Goobbue here and there because there was another skill up party there taking down Steel Shells.

I probably would have put up Defender, but I've been hitting Steel Shells for 0 dmg at times. Can't get skill ups from 0 dmg hits any more

Not sure, but did you have access to Blink/Stoneskin? I hear that works kinda decently endgame and I'm sure it would have helped you there >.>
