Heh. Going back to the original topic, I am a bit curious how all this is affecting the bottom line of companies like IGE that are pushing RMT. The fact that they can expend energy doing things like this suggests that their revenue vs. payroll cost is still more than high enough to justify staying in business in FFXI, and that's rather depressing.

I think that's an excellent sign - it suggests their traditional sources are drying up and that S-E is putting enough pressure on to make them feel the heat.

I doubt thats why some people are getting these messages. That would mean that people started to try and sell fake viagra or herbal supplements with mass mailings because people actually started listening to the fact you shouldn't buy drugs from unreputable sources.

Like any business they are just seeking to expand, and usually that means they forecast higher demand for their product. Fan sites are only really frequented by players making usership pretty much entirely made up of potential gil sources and buyers.

I agree, but this seems like a low return-on-investment sort of activity. I understand the expansion emphasis, but polling the core playerbase doesn't seem like a worthwhile activity; even if they should find someone willing to sell them some gil (unlikely for anyone that lives in a first-world country), they're unlikely to become a regular source for them. Seems like you'd waste a lot of energy doing this.

Then again, their payroll overhead is virtually nil... so maybe it really is a cost-effective tactic for them. :/

On the surface spamming everyone and their dog doesn't seem like a worthwhile activity, but it makes a hell of a lot of money. It has a high return compared to expended resources.

I don't understand why you think that someone in Europe, Japan or North America wouldn't sell their gil or character. I was talking to someone who was very proud of their EQ character that they used to have. Do you know how they quantified how great they built their character up to? They said how much they could have sold it for during EQ's heyday. Most players of any MMO have no problem selling in game items or currency for a quick buck.

There was a local company that did RMT that was hiring a few months back. I was tempted to take the job and do an 'insider' journal on it. They hardly paid anything though and I think they focused on UO of all things.
