It's happened to anyone who can do baisic healing I'd bet.
You go farming or your waiting for an event to start and somebody asks you to PL?
If like me you know that YES 100% YESS IT'S BETTER FOR YOU IF I DON'T PL YOU.
You tell them to go to hell or simply no.
But there are always exceptions and since I'm a nice guy I'll share mine.
1)If this person is on your LS and your in the area
2)If this person has aided you in the past
3)If you can make money out of it.
4)If you know this person to be a high lvl who is repeating
5)If you are so bored

Kurb, you can't, some folks will mooch off everyone. Maybe someday they will get the point but don't let it bother you. You tried, they failed not you.

It seems that is almost as good as the person who examined me as I was heading out of my MH in Sandy to check my chocobo, and then sent me a tell asking me to buy him a teleport scroll! I replied that he could quest it like I had and he never answered back.

I don't mind helping folks but geez when they get demanding or I don't know them they simply get a you can quest for (insert item desired here) or go find a way to make some money and buy it for yourself (much like I have done for most things I have).

Why do people even bother asking others to *buy* things for them? I've never understood that kind of mentality. Is there a large portion of players that will actually buy you that super expensive lvl 40 +1 great sword you want? Cause I dunno. A lot of requests I get are pretty much unreasonable, yet I get them more often than I should. It makes me think that these guys wouldn't ask for it if they hadn't had the experience of having these things bought for them in the first place.

This newb made a good decision. He purchased an item that will over time allow him to stand on his own feet rather than constantly waiting for handouts. Moat Carp that even the newbest newb can fish up will quickly get him some cash and they can be caught with Little Worms of all things... 20k buys enough Little Worms to gross out every little girl from Seattle to Miami...and best of all, you can use free rods to get them though you have to worry about breaks.

Well, you figure that a sizable minority of players are under the age of 18, and thus are used to their parents paying for everything for them. They're not paying for their account, they're not paying for their internet service, they aren't paying for anything - and they're used to asking their parents for things that they want.

Not all of the younger players are like this, of course, but there are enough to set the stereotype. There's also a smaller number of manipulative bastards who are just lazy and would rather mooch from other players than put in the time themselves (I find that these are often people who are masquerading as female players in an attempt to garner sympathy).

The former type of player (young teens/tweens) need to learn how economics work sometime, and FFXI is a great place to learn skills of that nature with little or no risk. The latter type of player is the reason I never give anyone money for begging. I have been known to make loans, but you have to be in my LS and I keep track of everything I'm owed, though I don't charge interest.

I was lucky in that I started playing FFXI right when the Eggstravaganza last year had just started. My rl friend gave me 20k to get me started with gear and such, but with so many people going crazy for eggs, I ended up making 150k just from selling them in my bazaar. I probably shoulda actually tried to do the egg quests, but at the time I was more worried about building a bankroll so I wasn't dirt poor all the time.

Of course, once I had 20k I repaid the loan to my friend, not because he needed the money (he had 3 mil) but because I ALWAYS repay my debts, whether it be gil or help with a mission/quest, etc. Unfortunately that's not always the case.

I mean, there's LOTS of ways to make money in vanadiel, maybe not big money, but even selling stacks of crystals will get you some bank if you are dedicated. I can understand a 20k or 30k loan to help a friend get started, but when it gets to a point where people always have their hand out it gets old quick.

Of course, having a mule in the three major cities helps, too ^^
