FFXI and the Playstation 3

V1.31 update has arrived, making FFXI fully compatible with the PS3.

Japanese store now has a "PS2 System Data" download under "Game Downloads", where previously you could only download the Genji 2 costumes. I'm not sure what it does exactly, but I've got a very strong hunch. It says something about "HDD" in the description, so I'm assuming it simulates a PS2 HDD. The file is 6636kb.

Edit: Not sure if it does anything still, but I downloaded it anyway. So far, I'm in the process of installing FFXI, and everything is going smoothly. The game creates a partition on your HDD (which it states is 10GB) to house it. Everything else installs as normal, and to start FFXI you just press the X button on the "FINAL FANTASY XI" thing under games. It goes exactly where all the demos/games you download do, and the filesize is listed as 11GB. Also, the 60GB PS3's built-in wi-fi works like a charm with it. =)
I'd like to say that the install time for PlayOnline was also considerably faster. But, I don't remember how long it was to install PlayOnline on the PS2 initially. However, I remember that FFXI took somewhere in the 55-60 minute range (accurate), and I'll judge, if that time is reduced, when I'm in the process of actually installing FFXI, and will update here.

Edit 2: Yeah, I was right. The timer to install FFXI initially starts at "40 minutes". Not incredibly fast, but still a significant increase in speed. It may also be that the timer is inaccurate, and I'll update again for the curious once the install is complete. Yes... I'm going to time it.

That's certainly a big step in the right direction. Who knows, maybe in a year or two they might actually decide to phase out the PS2 entirely giving everyone that big graphical update that's always asked about.

pfft, beautiful graphics my tarutaru ass... Graphics compared to any other game is still horrible. They need to update the entire engine. I mean seriously. A game that doesn't base most of the computational work on the graphics card and just the cpu isn't all that great.

Let's face it, FFXI graphics are very outdated, and could use an entire update to the engine. First thing to go should be the PS2 (piece of shit 2)

There is no reason to update the game's graphics for an outdated system like the PS2, lets face it, FFXI's best days are likely behind them and the company is probably looking more towards the future right now with a new MMO rather then completely revamping FFXI.

Well here's my take on FFXI Graphics:

1. The artistry is leagues better than most games out there (e.g. WoW which has a newer engine). SE has a top-notch art department.

2. The engine is lagging behind in technology since it's gotten old. IMO definitely in need of a good retouch and maybe some lovely new features ala Granny or similar engine.

I believe some MMORPGs upgraded their engines and released multiple versions of the engines-- Ultima Online and Everquest come to mind, so it's definitely not undoable, but I think the game content releases might take a hit from the diversion of resources which I would welcome if there were some mechanism in place to keep durable goods markets from tanking without the addition of tons of recipes/drops for the interim. Maybe they'll get to it now that FFXII is out, but they've probably got some other project on their plate... /sigh...

Now that it's installed on the PS3, have you had any time to run it through the passes? Faster? Less lag? Any noticable difference? I don't care about the graphics issue. The graphics are good enough for me, but I've never been a "graphics whore." My problem has been the lag that hits the system and the resolution. Just doesn't have the processing power to handle crowded zones, and the resolution is so low the equipment box takes up the entire screen. The later is why I'm probably going to build a gaming machine with my tax return! lol

I don't think YOU know what you're talking about....the graphics in the PC version are 10x better than PS2...have you ever played the PC version?

Playing both PC, PS2 and PS3 its alot better. I'd say on the PS3 graphics are the same if not better then a PC. Lag...theres always gonna lag but on the PS3 i could run thru Jeuno without slowing gown or any choppy typing...i thought it was an improvment. but if its graphics you want, you'll get it. on my 42" its awesome.

Are you able to play in higher resolution/more colors in PS3? hmmmph?

Its great that you have that opinion, but you are wrong, the graphics are not better in the PS2 version, even if its running on a PS3, the fact of the matter is ther resultion is crap on the PS2 version (640x480) whic means guess what? text boxes take up like 1/3 of your screen.

I own the game on PS2, PC and 360 and the PC/360 versions are by far the best, and the increased resolution and HD support make them significantly better.

I could NOT EVEN IMAGINE how I played on PS2 for that long after playing PC for about 1 hour. The graphics/gameplay/options/etc are totally better and more functional on PC. I was not saying PS2 is better. PS3 is way better than 360 on a HD TV. And the PS3 isn't emulating a PS2 its utilizing all of the PS3 and its processors and graphics. anyone else who says FFXI on PS3 sucks is wrong.
