  • Lacking Diversity.

I've been playing Final Fantasy XI for abit now, and I've also seen a few screenshots. One thing that REALLY makes me dislike the game, is the lack of diversity in armor styles. Why does everyone look the same? It's sooo lame. Does it ever change when you get higher up in levels? Right now, there's no way to tell who's what job by their looks. And all the amor looks pretty much the same.

Is it easy to tell each character's job just by looking at them when your level 20+? Or ever?!

    Re: Lacking Diversity.

It's level 60 when you start noticing a lot more changes because players can wear their job armor. The lack of armor at lower levels makes everyone look the same. At higher levels there's a few bits of good equip that makes everyone choose to wear that. So while there's a lot of diversity, unfortunately everyone is choosing what would be best (Scorpion Harness, Haubergeon users, for example). A general rule of thumb is that stuff that looks good, no one would use because stats kinda suck or there's something better. (DRK AF Body anyone? Replaced by Haubergeon/Royal Knight's Chainmail).

yes there is a lack of gear but i try not to let that bother me...as a PLD i saved conquest points to pay for my gear from centurian-Iron Musketeer
so looking at it like that it kind of makes sense to me.
Imagine if there was a customizing guild where the coulour of your gear could change

Carapace set is cool... but no one wears it because the latents only kick in with low HP...

I used to wear it on DRG. It's like a... dirty blue version of DRG AF with BIG POINTY SPIKES on.

This is actually one of the reasons why I've stopped playing FFXI. I love the look of the characters on games, and FFXI just isn't cutting it.

Does this also mean that all of the good armor can be used by all of the jobs? That's pretty lame.

Yes all the time, relic gear isnt even a shock to see any more. Relic weapons are still a little amagad when you see them but nothing unordinary anymore.

Psssh. You want lacking diversity? Try playing Ragnarok Online for a year. That's enough to kill ya!

Plus, in the lower levels, you CAN look different. I mean, look at people wearing specific armor they find just in Bastok, Sandy, and Windy. I look different from my party members because I got mine from Windy.

At least that's what it feels like to me.

I wore it twice. Until people called me a crab. I stopped wearing it since.

No, this isn't true at all. You're never going to see a BLM running around Jeuno with the Centurion's Armor set.

It's true, at lower levels the lack of gear choices can make people like similar, but 50+ there are a looooot more gear choices that make people stand out.

And honestly, it's kinda stupid to quit the game when you havent really given it a chance (level 30 or less) just because some noobs look like other noobs.

I am not sure how this relates to lack of diversity, FFXi has more diversity than any other game I have ever played.

If you are quitting FFXI because doesn'you dont think you look cool enough. I'm not sure there is anything anyone can do about that to alleviate your concerns.

you can quit if you want but from what i've seen FF11 is quite good......and who really cares if you look like saomone else.....odds are that at 1-30 you will but from 30 onwards except for closely linked jobs like BLM & WHM yyou will not look like another person in your party unless you have the same job as that person.

Why don't you consentrate on the stats of the gear not the look of it. Yeah it can get a lil mundane at times but its not about the color of the scale armour that makes you a good tank its the def and extra stats it gives. Every MMORPG is like that. WoW is like that, SWG was like that, Hero online, COH/COV i mean c'mon with these 2 games...i saw the same heros and villians flying around...You're going to run into a lack of diversity in all MMO games. If its diversity that makes you quit the game...I'm sorry you wasted your money on the game.

                            Re: Lacking Diversity.

Is there much diversity in any RL scenario where the clothing you wear must be Functional? Do firemen, police officers or military personnel wear different outfits to express their individuality? No they wear the uniform that has been tailored for the purpose of being practical for the jobs they do.

The gear in FFXI is deigned to benefit the jobs and boost the stats of the characters. There are more different jobs than there are functions in a party so often multiple jobs that perform the same function in a party will wear the same gear to best serve that function.

Also unlike other MMORGs FFXI has the PS2 to contend with, it is a limiting factor for the designers. If you can not appreciate the aesthetics of this game and what SE has accomplished with such limitations imposed on them, by all means play another game.

                              Re: Lacking Diversity.

I think what he's really wanting is for a blm to look like a blm and a whm to look like a whm. Or a war to look like a war while a drk looks like a drk. As opposed to just all melees look alike and all mages look alike. The way the game was designed, low level characters have similar choices in armor looks. There isn't anything for a lvl 10 melee to wear besides scale. So unless you're a mage, you wear scale. Same mages who wear doublets and tunics.

This changes the higher up you go, but there are certain points where a particular set of mage or melee armor is just too good so all melee or mages wear it.

I'd say lvl 30 is when you start to see some potential for diversity. There's RSE and additional choices for the "best" Tank gear vs DD gear. Most Mages will be wearing Seer's for a while at that point. RNG and THF will split off from other melee and use Noct Gear. Most MNK NIN and SAM will continue to wear pajamas. Some NIN and SAM might go for chainmail instead. Then it starts to kick into high gear once you hit your 50s when you start coming across Artifact Armor and JSE. You'll see some truly horrendous combinations as people try to maximize themselves.

Once you get far enough past 60 things start to narrow a bit again as people start to optimize their gear for the best efficiency and results. But I dunno, once you have a game where you can actually see the gear a person wears, I don't think you're going to get much diversity anyway. Everyone is always going to want the best piece. So that's what everyone will be wearing.

When I was a low level drk, I looked at the equipment choices and saw that I could deviate from everyone else and still maintain the same def and the same if not better stats. I went through a slops phase all the way until lvl 30. :p Cause, slops were similar in defense to other leg armor and the good pieces often had nice little boosts. Once I got high enough, though, the better choices were more in line what with everyone else had.
