what happens to my auction if i change side?

Say I have 7 items up in windhurst. Now I want to switch side to San Doria. If i do switch the sides, what happens to my auction item in windy? I tried checking it here in Sandy, and it's gray off

I assume you mean you've put items up in Windy and are now checking their status in San d'Oria...

It just means that you can't change auctions in one city from another city - although areas are linked:

Windy - Kazham
Bastok - Norg
Sandy - Rabao
Jeuno - AU

As they're linked, you can change auctions placed from that city from either a/h.

But you can't change, say, auctions placed in Jeuno from Windurst, they just get greyed out. They still turn yellow if they've sold, though.

If you put up an item in Sandy, then travel to Windy or any other city with an AH(except Rabao), you cannot check the status or take down that item from one of those other cities' ah. You would have to go back to Sandy to take down the item or check the sales status. Good thing is, the money or returned item will be sent to your mog house no matter what city you are in.

If by "changing sides" you mean switching allegiance from one city to another, there is a process you have to go through for that. There really is no reason to switch once you have started the game. Also I would assume that you would not meet the requirements to make the switch at this point.

AFAIK, there are no requirements to change allegiance. Well, outside of the upwards of a 40k payment.

Reasons to change allegiance? Wanting to be same as a friend, hitting rank 10 and wanting to work on another country's storyline. I actually thought about changing to Windurst for a bit so I could get that Key Item that lets you past the three mage gate solo, then switching back to Bastok. I didn't want to lose my outposts, though.

Allegiance has nothing to do with stuff you put on the auction house, so yes.

Just a quick note about AH's: There are 4 different auction houses in FFXI - Windurst, San d'Oria, Bastok, and Jeuno.

The locations of the access points for each are:

Windurst AH: Windurst Woods, Windurst Walls, Kazham

San d'Oria AH: Southern San d'Oria, Port San d'Oria, Rabao

Bastok AH: Bastok Markets, Bastok Mines, Norg

Jeuno AH: All areas of Jeuno, Aht Urhgan Whitegate, Al Zhabi, Tavnazian Safehold (Safehold's AH can only be used after chapter 4-1 of Chains of Promathia is completed).
