I was wanting to know will they Make a Ps3 FFXI Ver? Or Make it where The PS2 Ver. Will work on the PS3?

I've been wondering this as well! I plan on getting a ps3, and seeing as how I don't own a ps2, I'd buy it if it came out.

The recently released PS3 in Japan can run many PS2 games. At this time, Final Fantasy XI cannot run on it; no PS2 games that utilize the hard drive can currently run on the PS3. This should be fixed in a future PS3 software patch. Details from an IGN report:

Games that use the hard disk will currently not run. The problem is that the built-in PS3 hard disk cannot currently be used as a PS2 hard disk. We haven't tried it out ourselves, but this means games like Final Fantasy XI and Nobunaga's Ambition Online won't work.

For now at least. The good news is that Sony plans on making hard disk based PS2 games compatible in a future system software update. The list of titles that will work once this magic system update is carried is basically just Nobunaga's Ambition Online, Final Fantasy XI and the Play Online viewer, and Front Mission Online in all their variations, including expansions.

That quote from Somepage.com was also posted before the PS3 system upgrade. The system upgrade was done on Nov. 28th, as far as I've heard v1.11 seems to work with the PS2 FFXI but don't have the PS3 myself to actually test and see.

Maybe once it comes out for the PS3 they'll make downloadable updates for people who want to improve their graphics... but not allow it for the PS2?

Apparently 80% of the JP (or so) play on PS2 and you can bet your ass they'll jump on the PS3 as soon as it becomes widely available... just a thought, doesn't really affect me but a few people I know would like to see it.

I think SE just stopped having a headache getting it work for Xbox :p I think, as soon as they have the oppertunity and feeling that it will sell good, they will make a special PS3 version, depending on upcoming FF games, and other MMORPG. I dont thinkthey will make FFXI for PS3 ifthere is something like umm.. FFXI-2(just an example)

I think SE just stopped having a headache getting it work for Xbox :p I think, as soon as they have the oppertunity and feeling that it will sell good, they will make a special PS3 version, depending on upcoming FF games, and other MMORPG. Given that FFXI, with a few tweaks to the PS2 emulator, will be able to run on the PS3, I doubt we'll see any kind of 'special' PS3 version of FFXI. SE has more important things to do, such as making that new MMORPG of theirs, and whatever expansions they're cooking up.

It seems unlikey that SE will not abuse PS3's potential. I'm sure we won't see it now, but perhaps in the far future there will indeed be a PS3 FF11 version with updated graphics ....etc. I mean afterall the only reason why we don't see it on PS2 is because of it's limited capabilities, but PS3 doesn't have those. Therefore I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be possible in the far future

I hope they make FFXI at least 1080p in some way or another if it comes to PS3. I'd like to see it with amazing graphics. That would be a new change.

Read online that, though the PS2 version of FFXI will be compatible (maybe it already is, too lazy to check if it works), there won't be a PS3-specific version. SE said that since Windows is really similar to the box, it only took them a little bit of work to port it. But, for the PS3, they said they'd have to rewrite the game from the ground up, and that could take another two years, so there are no current or future plans to do it. Too lazy to look for source, but it makes sense.

Well that statement they had made was also before the PS3's SDKs were complete. So they really didn't know how hard it would be to do, but from their speculation they felt it would be to hard to do. In most part though Square-Enix just doesn't seem to like to remake their stuff, even their remakes weren't complete remakes. I mean they add in some nice graphics in the beginning and end but the rest of the content is still mostly the same.

So I don't know what they'll do, depending on how much work it is they might patch up the program to bump up draw distances or something if it detects that it's being run on a PS3 (So it's same to the XBox 360). Outside of that though I don't know it all depends on how easy is the PS3's SDK to work with.

I've heard it's far easier to use then PS2s was and if that's true then maybe they'll do something.

Yeah, they're not fans of remakes.

Although FF3 on the DS is pretty frickin sweet, so they CAN do it if there's enough demand... just hoping that FF6 is going to be as good when it comes out next year!

Agreed. Isn't most of the content in the game already there? They just have to buff everything up to scale and update some/if not most of the files?

Well also remember the game is playing under an emulation. So if it was to become a PS3 without the emulation would depending on what kind of work they'd have to do or if just recompiling it will work. Outside of that the game has the setting options to adjust it's resolution and all. Just with the game consoles they are set at a point the company felt was best for it.

So changing the games resolution, TnL, Draw Distances, Bump Mapping, etc.. are configurable options as you can see with the controls you get for it when playing on the PC.

However the games' character models are not excatly HD, they are pretty close though. If SE wanted to make then HD they'd only have to bump up the vertex's some. Maybe increase skeletons in areas like the Mithra's tail, and bump the textures up and they'd be HD.

I remember reading somewhere programming and the PS3 would be similar to the PS2 becasue when the PS2 came out it was difficult for game developers to create games because there wasn't availible tools and hardware to help the devs. So Sony took an initiative to make programming and developing on the PS3 easier and actually very similar to the PS2.

Also has anyone who owns one taken a look under the hood? You're likly to find Nvidia's nice looking geforce 8800 768mb card among some other goodies.

Edit: OH also forgot. All in all porting FFXI should be easy since programming is so similar to the PS2 so rebuilding a game from the ground up shouldn't have to happen. But to fit graphically it might have to but adding rendering and smother purportions isn't all that hard...basically just the the graphics card do its jobs.
