  • Spiny Spipi

I'd really like to get a Mist Silk Cape for my White Mage, but it's way too costly at the AH for me to afford. I understand it can be found on a Notorious Monster named Spiny Spipi found near Windurst.

The only NM I've ever fought was Bubbly Bernie, but this would be the first time I ever 'camped' an NM. I was hoping for some information before I start.

1.) Can a level 16 White Mage solo this?
2.) What's the drop rate for the Mist Silk Cape?
3.) Is there anything special I have to do in order to get it to spawn?

And any other advice you might have is greatly appreciated.

    ffxi.somepage's NM guide: http://ffxi.somepage.com/mobdb/nm.php
    ffxiclopedia info on Spipi: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Spiny_Spipi

The first link is useful in general, but specifically of interest to you is the explanation of lottery spawns. The second link has the rest of the information you want except for the drop rate. I haven't camped Spipi a lot, but from my friends' experiences I would estimate the drop rate to be better than 1 in 10, maybe as good as 1 in 5, but odds aren't something you can count on. Regardless of the average drop rate, you might get it your first try or camp it for weeks and never get it.

So basically I have to kill a bunch of crawlers, and it will eventually appear. Good to know.

I have terrible luck with drops for some reason, so I'll probably spend weeks there.

      Thanks for the information.

Thats roughly all there is to it. It is easier to camp him with /BST or /RNG for widescan, but it appears that WHM16 is your highest, so that isn't an option.

I-7 to J-7 is the spawn area, as the link mentions. Make sure you go to the top of those squares and down along the river. There are about three crawler spawns down there that could be Spipi.

The good thing about camping Spiny Spipi is that even if you don't get the drop right away, you will eventually get enough Silk drops to just go out and buy the cape.

He is soloable as BLM12/nosub - It was me and got the drop!

          Re: Spiny Spipi

I'm 5/6 on this guy, but everytime I've hunted him I've been a THF. I've never personally seen him spawn outside of I-7, at the tip of the point of mountains that swoops in from the right edge of the map. I've seen him spawn; right between the two big roks, right past those rocks, just a hair north of the road, and directly next to the river by the small rock formation.

I made a mule for my brother-in-law to goof around with and he went WHM. He wanted nice things to wear (greedy) so I told him I'd get the cape off Spipi and it took a grand total of 10 minutes.

Like the others have said, just make a V shaped swath from the point at I-7 back to the start of the river, and to the tower on the other side. I've also found it helps to kill anything there at all, not just the crawlers. Most times I will have killed all the bees and crawlers, with a ton of mandies left with the occasional gob. If Spipi isn't showing up, it seems to help to kill those mandies and gobs as well. That was the case this last time. My b-i-l was watching and I told him "He'll show up if I take out these hordes of mandies before the crawlers spawn." Sure as hell, pop, claim, drop.

And I've never had him drop anything less than 2 spools of silk.

          Happy hunting.

            Re: Spiny Spipi

killed him in K-6, J-6, I-7 and J-7, it`s almost like the other said, it`s a small range around the mountains.
            got 2 capes
was about 100k worth it as i got the drops.

            good luck

              Re: Spiny Spipi

Well, I tried camping Spiny Spipi today for three hours. I figured everyone else would be busy with the Starlight Festival, so less competition.

I followed all your advice...the V-swath pathway, killing all the crawlers, etc. Darn thing never showed.

Or maybe it did, and someone else killed it before I got there. Who knows? I guess I just have bad luck.

I did get 8 silk thread spools, though.

Maybe I'll have better luck next time.

                Re: Spiny Spipi

I usually hang out around that area when I have a job in the level 10-12ish range. With a bit of items and such, it's possible to take him down without too much fuss if he pops. I've gotten him three times this way in about fifteen trips in three years though, and only got the drop once, so take that however you want.

1/2 on Spiny, can verify where it pops.

                    Re: Spiny Spipi

                    I did it!

It took my four days, and I had to kill three of them, but third time is the charm, I guess. I finally got the Mist Silk Cape.

It sure beats paying 80k for it at the auction house!

I also managed to get 3 1/2 stacks of silk thread spools in the process, so I made quite a bit of gil on that.

Thanks everyone, for all the help.

Don't you just love te satisfaction that comes from hunting a monster and you finally receive the reward? Now you're ready for Jaggedy-eared Jack.

                        Congratulations, though. ^^

Other ones you'll probably end up doing more times than you think you will:

                        Valkurm Emperor (Empress Hairpin)
                        Leaping Lizzy (Bounding Boots)
Royal Jelly (Most common BCNM for Utsu:Ni)

Royal Jelly will probably have significant downtime as everyone hurriedly collects seals to fight Fe'e for the Kraken Club until everyone who's anyone has one.

Hmm, well I can't imagine a white mage such as I will have much use for a Rabbit Charm or Bounding Boots. But maybe next time I face a notorious monster, I'll have better luck. Or maybe some help.

Royal Jelly also drops Erase. I've never camped JeJ, but I've camped both Lizzy and VE for someone else. This is the reason I say you'll be camping them more times than you think you will. Even if you don't want it... Even if you already have it... You will most likely end up camping VE/Lizzy more times than you think you will

Does this NM pop every hours or 1 1/2 hour? It seems that the pop time is incorrect. Anyone know the exact time?
