Can you back that up with information? I've seen other pirate myths that are bs and this sounds like one of them(no offense meant to you, just that I think you've read misinformation).

      Re: A desperate request

If you're in China, it's a given that the ISP is blocking stuff. China's whole internet policy and configuration focuses on controlling what parts of the internet can be accessed from inside of the country. Just because CS, WoW, or FFXI isn't being blocked doesn't mean that they aren't blocking anything.

Why not have one of your friends send you a copy of their install folder to overwrite yours, if one of them has successfully patched?

I'm having the same problem ;_; I'm in the US, though. I haven't been able to log in since the update started. I'm assuming it is just traffic, I've done almost everything to address the issue. It's the only other logical explanation.

In essence, if you can connect to a site, you can get a data stream. Moribund can connect therefore it's not blocked. Content-specific data stream filtering is not possible at this time.

This is highly unlikely. I've experienced the disconnect during long updates before. If there was blockage, it wouldn't do anything--it would just freeze on the same file every time or fail to connect every time. Since placing a document generic content filter on a router would create an absolutely huge load on the router, bandwidth all over China would grind down to pre-56k rates (or worse). Basically the only kind of content that could be scanned would have to be textual--a computer cannot recognize "indecent" images, models, or videos at this time except by looking at the sending site. What if it's compressed? Is the filter going to save the content locally, decompress it, scan it, and send it back down the pipe? What you are proposing is not even vaguely possible. You've probably heard about the Microsoft/Google search result filtration stuff... That's done by a search engine specifically designed for China... Microsoft/Google wouldn't have had to do what they did if China were already capable of blocking data streams based on content...

Oi, it's such a pain to recover what I've read so long ago, but I guess I could search for it.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. In China, most things are accessible with the exception of political websites or anything having to do with Taiwan or Tibet. They're just not available.
I know that SE isn't blocked here, because I DO get a connection, but it often times out, especially during the afternoons here, where I guess traffic going out of the country would be at it's highest.
The only really incredible thing they have exist in chatrooms and the like: when you type in what you're trying to say it will go through a filter with the PSB who will then decide whether or not it goes up: most of that is automated. A lot of the BBS's are also done like this, and posts are often removed whenever they will contain criticisms or anything really sensitive. Strange but true.

I assumed you were speaking about the OP downloading. Honesty, I'm sure it might even be legal then, but that would require actually looking back at the current laws, which I don't want to bother with atm.

Even so, torrenting is about as enforceable as a law against giving a friend a CD, not an issue for either party involved as long as they are not breaking any rules of people who can enforce(like posting links to such things on a forum that doesn't want it).

Despite some paranoia this forum's management might have about copywrited material(which I've encountered in another life) being exaggerated, it's better not to post links here, which is why I said it's better off googleing it.

                    Re: A desperate request

                    success!
As of this morning I've totally updated, and the game runs surprisingly smooth. My character's name is Moribund, but I haven't quite figured out which server I'm on yet. I chose to be a Hume male with warrior as my first job, so we'll see how it works out.
If anyone feels like reintroducing me to the basics I'd be really appreciative of the help. I'd also love to join up with some linkshells if anyone is still open for it.

                    I'm so psyched!

By the way, I'm on the server Remora. Looking for anyone who's open to new members in their groups! Thanks!

Its not evidence of legal action, but a friend at work has had his cable disconnected for d/l'ing torrents. They called him quite a bit about several movies (all they ones they called on were WB movies, not sure if it was just coincidence on that) and finally disconnected his service a few weeks ago. Not sure if he's been able to get it reconnected yet.
