  • Stealing Items From Mobs

A few days ago, I found myself sucessfully stealing my first few saruta cotton from Pygmaioi in Tahrongi Canyon, but stealing doesn't seem to happen very often, and I tend to get quite a few unsucccesful steals too. *sigh!*
Infact I'm finding that I get more successful steals from orcs and gobs than I do from other creatures..... well I'm fairly certain of it at least, which is a bit odd to me.

In trying to steal items from other creatures, it wouldn't have anything to do with the time of day or weather effects for e.g. ingame or anything, would it?

Or is it just the usual random thing?

It's pretty random. You can get an increase on it with certain very rare items (Rabbit Charm, for instance) but especially at lower levels you're not going to consistently steal anything.

Stand behind the monster. Try to use it before you have any hate i.e start fight by stealing behind the mob. Another good way to get behind it and loose hate is after SATAing the tank or SATAWSing the tank. Being behind with no hate greatly increases chances of a successful steal. Items like murph said do help, Artifact gives something like +8 steal total I think, Thiefs Kote at 70 gives +3 and rabbit charm gives +1 at lv7. I believe steal rate to also be effected by your current lv but I have no proof, I just stole alot more often at higher lvs and I always used same technique.

There's also a questable belt item that gives Steal +1. The quest is rather long and drawn out, but you only have to do it once for the Key Ring Belt. Quest name is Bait and Switch. The quest isn't hard, providing you use this walkthrough.

The quest is somewhat new, I don't know if you are including it in the Steal +8.

And also, some mobs simply don't have anything you can steal from them, and thus, steal will always fail when used against them.

My experience with steal is that obtaining any items seems to be totally random at best. Certain items, however, seem to be easier to steal than others. Example being, I can steal bone chips from bones just about everytime I try.

Things like beastcoins (of course) are where the randomess really comes in. Some days I get them like they are going out of style... and other days no matter how much steal + gear I have... I barely get half a stack.

Whoah! Thats ounds like a good idea! I never thouhght of trying that before. I'm going to try that out next time I'm ingame. Thanks!

The only slight drawback I see to this though, is that I've always started off my fights with SA, (again from behing the mob as is how this ability is used) and you can't use both SA and steal at the same time, so by starting with steal, I would only be starting with a regular amount of DMG from a sword instead of the extra amount you can make from SA. It's a little annoying, but good if I want to collect more items.

Yeah, I read about the items with +1 to steal (and the other ones at higher levels too) after Murph suggested the Rabbit charm.
I looked it up on somepage and thought.....
WHOAH! I just HAVE TO get me one of those!

I'm definitely drawn to that Rabbit Charm now! I know it would possibly help a bit with steals.

I can't believe at around level 74-75 there is another item with steal +5!
That would greatly help when I get there! WOW! Cool!

And you said that there was a piece of AF with +8 too.
I guess I would have to wait for a certain level to do the quest for that.
Do you have any idea what level AF armour is, for THF?

                Re: Stealing Items From Mobs

I read up on the quest for the Key Ring Belt at level 20, (on alla) and I'm under the impression that you need more than one person to do this quest, because it says something about a party member being locked in a cell, and that you have to speak to a npc to get them out.

Is this true, or is it really possible to do this quest solo?

It seems the Key Ring Belt also dispenses a skeleton key, but that would be completely useless to me, because all I am after is the + on steal, along with any of the helpful stats these items hold, like dex e.t.c.

That's odd. For me, it's always been things like beastcoins from orcs and gobs that I have been able to make a lot of successful steals with.
Though it's just the regular beastcoins, and none of the special ones like gold and silver.

I don't know if this has anything to do with what level I'm at, but now I've started collecting arrows (can't remember which type) through stealing from a gob type, and I've managed to collect quite a few in a short time so far.

I meant the entire Thief AF set would give you a total of +8 steal, there are 5 pieces but only 4 have +Steal on them.

You can do the quests for AF at lv50 but you must complete the AF weapon quest first which you can start at 40. Links to guides below.

Checking on the AF now I see its actually only +5 Steal in total from 4 pieces. Sorry.

You can do it solo. The party that gets locked up consists of you and 2 other NPCs, the Mithra NPC usually in Upper Jeuno from the Signal Pearl pearl quest and a Tarutaru who's a master at disguises, he appers in a few of the NPC quests too.

If you look at http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Bait_and_Switch (Step 5) you can see what you need to say to stop you're partners from being captured.

                        Re: Stealing Items From Mobs

What's always worked for me with Steal:
                        1. Just as the mob prepares to take it's attack turn
                        2. Mob begins Casting a spell
                        3. Mob focus/hate is directed at another player
                        4. Macro'ing in all your +Steal gear
                        5. Mob lvl vs Player lvl (factor for difficulty)
                        6. And being able to recite the ABC's backwards

Pretty much it's more or less random factors that we have not definitive way to 'prove' that any one thing helps more.

The mob determines what kind of beastcoin you get. If you hunt in Davoi for example the beastmen near the archer knife pop and the warriors axe all give silver beastcoins, but the 2 nm's give regular beastcoins. In Quicksand caves I get mithril beastcoins when I steal there. I'm 46 thf and this was in party since the mithril ones are too high for me to effectively farm yet. Hope this helps.

Is there anything really worth stealing though? In my experience most things that can be stolen are fairly worthless, at best being beastcoins.
