Re: What do you do if you're lost?

For one thing, I usually don't get lost. I have either a map with me or printed off.

If I do get lost and I don't have a map on me, I do these following things (not really in any sort of order):

~/shout or ask ls for directions or help (typically a guide or the position of the exit).
~Do <pos> and write down my position, get a map printed off from ffxi-atlas.com, and continue from there.
~Warp or deathwarp if needed and try not to get lost next time (not a good thing to try if your HP is far from where you are).

      Good luck

Re: What do you do if you're lost?

You could check if you have a map every time you enter a zone, and place map markers at any entrances or exits you find, and name them for where they connect to... Other than that, use web sites that have the maps posted.

If I'm lost I just simply look up a map... Probably using the new firefox plugin (thanks to whoever posted that ^^)

I presume you're referring to this. Click Here

DAMN IT! Why can't they create one for Mozilla too?!
I don't like Firefox. I find it rather awkward to organise the bookmarks with that.
I DEFINITELY prefer Mozilla, and have done for ages!

Please let someone create this plugin for Mozilla......
                PLEEEESSSSEEE!

On the other hand, I do find it rather easy to find my way around a zone with a map anyway, (I got that map for Dangruf ages ago. Some kind person helped me out with it) but the way the plugin presents itself, I think it would be a little easier just to search from a drop/pull down menu (I presume all the area names are in alphabetical order too, which is a great advantage) if you know the area name of the map, than by trying to search all over one page of names, taking me roughly 20 mins to find the one I'm looking for.

Personally, I think it would be much easier in an alphabetical list!

No, he's referring to the Firefox toolbar plugin that was posted here earlier today. It covers more than just maps.

Re: What do you do if you're lost?

Checking online maps is a great way to find yourself around some place. Unfortunately some people don't have a means to view maps while they're playing. It would require them log out and then check the map.

When I first started playing in beta, I was on a dial up connection. So that would require me disconnect, go to another room, and then log in to check the map. What I started doing was exploring but "leaving bread crumbs." I don't know if has changed, but in beta you could leave a marker on the map screen even if you didn't have the map. So I could leave "Check Points" in places I had been, and could eventually map out the location.

Now when retail started, I'd been most of the places there were. I didn't even bother with maps for the longest time since I remembered where everything was. So I haven't tested if it's even possible to leave a marker if you don't have the map.

In my LS I've earned the name "Map Man." I seem be able to lead anybody or any group to just about any place in Vana'diel. There are people in my LS who I'd swear couldn't get from the MH to the AH in their own home town if I wasn't around for them to /follow! lol

Yes, you can place markers without having the map. That's sort of the point of markers.

Well I was under the impression that point of the markers was to mark something on the map. And you can't exactly mark something on a map you don't have. Since there were a number of changes that took place in the transition from NA beta to NA retail, I wasn't sure if this was one of them. Thank you for verifying.

No, you can't place them without having the map. The only options are to see where your party is, and the green system markers which are of course never used. Unless your version of FFXI works differently from mine, it's impossible.

EXACTLY! I'm sure there are probably still some areas of the game for me for which I don't have a map to as yet either, and I'm one of those players who would have to log out of the game if I wanted to check on
http://www.ffxi-atlas.com to look for the area and check where I was, and this is rather annoying! I wouldn't want to keep logging out of the game for everytime I got lost in some place!

Is this where some people have said that they would appreciate the use of a windower, to be able to check this kind of thing? I've read that it is not a satisfactory tool for the game's use, though I can't remember why.

If one is allowed to be used, then I'm all for it, otherwise, if not, and if I know the reasoning for it, then I will understand.

Another option - I believe that not too long ago, there was a book of maps published for FFXl. That might be of use to me.
I could look into this, if there is a site selling them. I'm not sure about other players though.

Re: What do you do if you're lost?

The original US release of FFXI had the BradyGames guide which had all of the standard and Zilart area maps. I don't know of any publication that has the Chains of Promathia maps (let alone the Aht Urhgan maps).

If it's really that much of a bother that you absolutely must have instant access to a map, though - just get all the maps in the game. Look up how at FFXI-Atlas.com to find out what to do to get each one, then you'll have the map for real and won't have to bother with logging out.

Most map quests are quite simple. There's only a few that are a serious pain - Pso'Xja, Promyvion-Dem/Mea/Holla/Vahzl, Riverne Site #A01/#B01, The Garden of Ru'hmet, Temple of Uggalepih. Most of the others are purchased or very easily quested.
