  • Newbie Battlesystem Woe

    Ok the battle system..

Left click on target, left click again and menu appears, left click check to find out if I can kill it, left click attack.. run to target and wait to the end of battle.

Ok it might get more exciting later.. but I'm fond of keyboard shortcuts... is there anything to make the process more painless?

Also as a galka I find it difficult to click enemies without going into 1st person.. which kinda spoils it. Any suggestions?

Your manual is full of keyboard shortcuts. Read up on that and you should know most of what you're missing out on right now.

Personally I hate using the Keyboard to play FFXI(keyboards are for chatting and macros!). The game was designed with the Playstation 2 controler in mind and it plays best when configured this way(in my opinion).

You can us a Playstation to USB adapter or you can buy a controler that wroks like a dual shock. You used to be able to get PSX to USB adapters from Linksag but they closed down...so you're stuck with Ebay to find one.

Keyboard F8 key targets the closest NPC, then Tab to change target if necessary.
                F1 key targets yourself.
F2 ~ F6 keys target party members in the party list. Yourself is always on top of list: F1 key.

/target <bt> will target the enemy that the party is attacking. I found that is useful when puller pulls the mob toward the camp. This would target to the mob that is being pulled. If the party is attacking a group of mobs, don't use this command.

                  Thanks for the advice,

Changing to compact keyboard really helped, meant I Could tab whilst I Was moving - didn't have to STOP and tab...

I will get a PS2 controller with convertor

                    Re: Newbie Battlesystem Woe

after a while it gets easier. tabbing is the best way for the keyboard...just tab to find the beast, enter enter to attack it or enter up enter to check it. it will become second nature...

now the ps2...that takes some practice

I have never tried the compact keyboard mode, how is it ^^?

In standard keyboard mode, Numpad 0 key can also select/switch target too. The Numpad section of the keyboard can access to the character's movement direction/walk/run/auto-run, target selection, camera lock/zoom/view, menus, switch windows.

I guess I am used to the standard keyboard mode

I also think PS2 controller is the way to go. But I guess it just depends on how u started playing. Most people that started on PS2 are a lot more "at home" with the controls rather than PC..and vise versa

As with everything in this game:

Try all the options, you never know which you'll like the most.

Yeah it really is a matter of taste, I have a PS2 controller with USB converter for my PC but cannot for the life of me use it in FFXI. I personally find everything awfully slow, clunky and cumbersome when using the controller compared to my keyboard.

So if you're brought up with PC RPGs and FPS I recommend keyboard to be honest (if you're PC savvy a controller will just feel awkward and cumbersome).
Keep in mind, sig might be outdated I just update it a few times per week.
Signature with the usual levels and obtained stuff etc. . .

Use TAB to cycle through all target-able objects within sight (including mining points, logging points, doors, etc). Use CTRL-C to check, then CTRL-A to attack. Other useful shortcuts are CTRL-I to bring up your inventory, CTRL-E to bring up your equipment, F8 to target closest NPC; this comes in handy when a puller returns to your camp with a mob, it's much faster to wait til it's close and hit F8 then attack, rather then tabbing through mobs until you manage to get the right one, and it's also nice when trying to target the AH and there's 8 million people standing around it. Use F7 to target yourself (useful for lotting or passing on treasure in the pool), and F2-F6 for targeting specific members in your party, in order of the party list (F2 is the top member, F3 the next down, etc).

Get used to using the keyboard and you'll find yourself using the mouse less and less, and you'll be faster at the keyboard then keyboard+mouse anyway. I use the mouse for only 2 things at this point, sorting my inventory, and adjusting the camera angle when I'm target locked in battle. Most of the time my mouse is sitting in the charging dock when I'm playing FFXI.
I'm a slow motion accident, lost in coffee rings and fingerprints...
