  • Plumage of a Gilbuyer?

    Semi-rant warning...

So I'm in a party (I know all rants start like this, but read, it's amusing)...

51-53, fighting Robber Crabs in Kuftal. Me = Main Heal as RDM/WHM

I barely get to the camp, resting up my MP b/c I figure it's going to be a bit of a stretch for me to MH and I've used up a good bit of mana on Sneak/Invis and the tank, a NIN, pulls a crab before I get a chance to throw buffs; thinking not too much of it, I throw Pro-III on him and then have to heal him b/c about 15 seconds into the fight his shadows are down (b/c he's pulling obviously). Cure III, hate, death for me...

Tank says crabs are too fast, he needs Haste (I was dead before I could get to that point) and the crab needs Slow (fortunately, the BLM offered to Debuff since I'm MHing).

I get Raise II from a friendly nearby PL (who's with another party), rest up and continue. This time, I say, "let me get MP and buff up before the pull." My MP is nearly full and I see: "Incoming Robber Crab".......... So I throw Protectra, Stoneskin, Blink, and we're off. Most of my mana gets eaten up, I take hate once but don't die, and I get my level back. So we repeat the process as my MP is full from level up.

Did I mention the tank is only throwing Shihei...

Tank says Red Mage needs more MP

So I ask, what pray tell would you suggest that I buy?

    /check's me...

You need Ether Rings and Astral Earrings...

I say, "Oh, I'll just go crack open my piggy bank and buy them... I'm sure they're quite cheap and affordable." (Facetious, I know that A. Errings are 2mil ea and Ether rings are 250k... grand total 4.5mil) I'm wearing Hume RSE legs and boots, and Electrum Rings.

Black mage laughs... mentions he has his finger on his {Escape} macro...

    So I get this...

    "Do have {Convert} {Red Mage}?" (sic)

    to which I reply (mockingly):

    "Do have {tool}s {Ninja}?" (sic)

    DRG says:

    "Ooo {Burn}"

as we've all noticed he only throws Shihei.

DRG then says, "3 jobs @ 75? How much did that char cost ya? lol" (paraphrase of longer conversation)

    Oh... look... another Robber Crab... I have 123 mana... That should be enough for a RDM to heal a crappy NIN tank right? {Hmmm...}

    Of course, again, the ubiquitous...

    "Do have {Convert} {Red Mage}"

    so I say:

    "If I Convert I'll die."

so I run out of mana...

    Tank dies...

    I die...

says, "Told ya you should've used {Convert}"...

I say, "How the f___ can I cast Cure IV when you pulled a Robber Crab? Am I a tank?"

    No response...

    DRG Dies.

    BLM casts {Escape}

Apparently, this guys "played for 3 years", "has RDM 60 (so he's better'n me)", "has tons of tools" that he never throws, and assumes everyone has enough "pocket change" lying around to buy multiple 2 million gil items at the drop of a hat.

In total, for 30 minutes of PT, I only lost about 100XP from when I started. I just went and killed a bee in CN to get my level back.

I think I'll agree with the DRG and assume he's a Gil buyer...

Please, don't say... /blist and move on. I've already done that. It's just a nifty little story, and the first time (I assume) I've met an bonafide character/gilbuyer in FFXI.... Hopefully, the grand expense of the characters (at least the ones I've seen lol$500) will keep the number of such people I shall encounter at roughly....

    1.

I'll also say that I'm a bit of a novice at RDM Main Healing at 50ish... I've got a good bit of 30ish WHM main healing, but I haven't MH'ed as RDM since Qufim, so I'm not super-dude, but I keep up. I'm not sure that Convert wouldn't have done something other than cause me to die quickly with no effect... maybe I should've tried it...

I'll also mention that the Puppetmaster outparsed the DRG, the BLM, and the RNG...

I've seen plenty of people who've made it to 75 on legit characters that suck at what they do. He could have bought the character, but he probably just doesn't know how to manage hate.

On the same not, am I right in reading that the tank was pulling too?

Yes...yes, he was... without a macro, even.

I would've said something, but I really didn't have time.

      Note we had a RNG...

I think the RNG might have pulled the 2nd crab and/or the 3rd one, I'm not sure. I just know that the first one and the last one were pulled by the NIN (he was running ahead of them as he returned to camp).

I had a very similar experience in Kuftal at that level, except that my story ends with the ninja using Mijin Gakure while the blm was casting escape. Blm was second on the hate list, so of course he gets interrupted and we all die.

Epilogue: next time I saw the ninja, he was wearing full relic. ><

I'm sleepy so don't quite understand your post @@; sounds like you got a bad nin? Bad tanks are always very noticeable heh. I had this 1 nin once, I casted dia, I got hate >.> He got really well known in my LS because a couple people got to PT with him.

but a few weeks later that nin got to 75 anyway.

But if he buys gil, why would he only throw shihei? That's just bad skill and laziness I think.

I absolutely HATE people that don't wait for resting MP after I spend 10 minutes giving sneak/invis to people, and for me to do buffs. This is especially prevalent in the ToA areas, because all anyone cares about is zomgexpchains! I've seen it all, pulling before I cast buffs and I don't have enough magic, and then when they get the mob back to camp, I'm in the middle of casting Protectra and the tank says " LOL Ah needz hasete!!!" You would have it right now if you waited 60 seconds longer to start pulling you ass!

Ahem, well I digress, didn't mean to derail your thread with my ranting <.< But yeah, we've all been there. Crappy Ninjas are a dime a dozen these days. Sad thing is, most of them point the finger at the healer when they die from being shitty, because they drained your MP because they couldn't keep shadows up.

Well.. with Carb's high defense, Shihei and Katana alone is very hard keep hate against party members who use magic. RDM main heal + Dispel + Haste + debuff duty with a crappy NIN tank is not cool... I would not blame the RDM/WHM.

At least paladins understand the concept of needing mp to ensure success.

That's not true. Sometimes it's the blm's fault because the ninja somehow got to level 50 without learning how to time ichi. "Ah needz stun evry 30 secunds stoopid blm!"

Isn't 51-53 too soon for there anyway? I was in there at 54-55 WHM and getting 120-160 a pop.

                      That probably didn't help, either.

campsitarus suggests 52-55 there so I guess it depends on who was the lower end of it

It also depends on how fast the party can kill the Carb.

The battle can drag very very long, especially if the Carb is in the mood of spamming buffs.

Well, 51 is my highest character level, the party creator was a high rank JP Player, and I've been told Kuftal is the place to be. I hated Garlaige...and I don't want to go back, so Kuftal sounded just peachy. I was getting just over 200xp on the mobs which is generally a sign of overcamping except that I had recently been hunting lovely Goblin Furriers in a Yuhtunga party and getting ungodly high XP (200-250ish) for next to no work and nil chance of death... (Chain #5 for 300 Even)

Buff spam is easily controlled by a RDM... My mana was perpetually drained due to Haste/Dispel/Cure/Refresh cycle. Fortunately, I only had 2 refreshes.

A lot of you mention that he may just suck at NIN tanking... While I may be able to concede that point, I have my doubts:

                              1. NIN said that Astral Earrings were "cheap now" (they are not nor have they ever been on Asura) and assumed that "anyone" should be able to afford them. The conversation indicated that he considered million gil items just a drop in the bucket for the average player and seemed shocked that I wasn't wearing them.

                              2. He's a RDM60 who thinks that performing a {Convert} routine at the beginning of a battle--even before a good tank would've been able to take control of the mob--was a good idea.

                              3. He was pulling...when we had a RNG...as the Tank...

                              4. I didn't mention it earlier, but when we were moving to camp, he seemed to have "gotten lost" in Kuftal Tunnel... A player with 3 level 75 jobs should at least be able to follow a PT train to a camp site. I've never been to Kuftal nor do I have the map, and I didn't have any problems...
