    Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and actually just started playing FFXI about a week ago. My friend is leaving the game and gave me his character and all his money. I don't want to play the character as I would rather play my own, however, I was wondering, is 4 mil gil enough to eq my new character through, say, the 30s. And does anyone have an advice for a new player as to making the most of the money (i.e. crafting, buy high/sell low etc.)? Thanks for your help.

Yes. While some jobs are a lot more expensive than other jobs, 4 million gil will last you quite a long time. Just don't spend it all in one place.

This is a better idea, you won't learn how to play the game by using an already leveled character.

I'm going to have to say yes.

Though that will quickly burn through that 4 Million and the OP won't be in any better position then any other new player.
To the OP, you're in a unique position, one that usually only people starting a new character have so use it wisely. I would recommend using that large sum of gil to start leveling a craft. With 4 Million and good decisions on what craft to level and what items to level off of you can end up coming out ahead and have a steady income to take you through the rest of your time playing.

Only word of advice I'd give in tis situaton would be not to buy any huge money items IE: 1mil+, until you're in the upper 30's at minimum. There's alot of lower level expensive equipment that will easily break your bank and below 30, EQ doesn't make the significant difference it will later. Also, learning the game after playing for 30+ levels will give you a much better grasp of what to spend alot on, and what is more novelty items.

I like the idea of starting a profitable crafts business with the money. I had a lot of fun with trade skills on EQ. Could you suggest a few possible good investment ideas (which crafts are most profitable, links to resource pages, etc)? If you have time I would appreciate it. I don't want to make a mistake with the money. I'd much rather have a worthwhile experience. Thanks again.

                    Re: The Gift

I'd suggest holding off on any significant crafting ventures until you spend a bit of time doing your own farming / mining / logging / etc. Note how much gil you can make doing those activities, and you'll get a better feel for how much your 4M gil is worth.

There are some low level crafts that can turn a small profit, even during skill ups. Low level Ingot recipes in Goldsmithing and Smithing can be decent profit as long as you buy your ores from the guild when they are at their low price. You could also try Lumber recipes in Woodworking if you happen to be in Sandy. If you happen to be in Windurst... well, Clothcraft can turn a decent profit when you skill up in the teens, but there are some gil sinks early on before that point.

                      Re: The Gift

I would recommend taking leather, smithing and goldsmithing up to about 20 each. That shouldn't have much, if any impact on the funds and it would help out with early farming and drops.

I also agree that you may not want to go crazy with gear til you level for a while just to get an idea of where you want to go ect. I hate to say it but there is also a stigma against low level players in uber high end gear. If you show up to a party with no subjob and 1 mil worth of gear, some people will naturally think you bought gil. Trust me, you don't want to start out the game with that rep.

                        Re: The Gift

I started with Alchemy and it was profitable or at least break even pretty much the whole way, it just depends on if you're going to follow some guide that doesn't take anything into account or research your options first. Fishing at some levels has also been alright.

QFT. You can easily get to 30 without buying any one item over 100k, and anything you buy over 30k pre-30 is going to be super-uber anyways.

Many items that are expensive have Rare/EX (cannot be sold or traded) versions that can be obtained with some patience and camping these days.

Leaping Boots -> Bounding Boots (rare/ex)
Emperor Hairpin -> Empress Hairpin (rare/ex)

                            Re: The Gift

My suggestion is save as much gil as you can till you have the experience to know what items will help you the most.

About leveling a craft it is nice and all but your priority should be leveling your character to at least lvl 50 before you start a craft, before that all you are gonna do is burn a lot of gil and be unable to farm most materials you'd need to make a craft profitable.

I'm not saying crafts can't be profitable at lower levels but without a good understanding of the areas (and other knowledge you gain with experience) crafts aren't more than a gil sink really.

Cooking is cheap though, I don't know about current prices but 500k should be anough to get to lvl 60 which is very useful. But even so you should wait a bit till you have more experience with the game before investing on a craft.

                              Also,
If you go witha mage job, check for npc's that sell scrolls. Avoid the AH as prices are usually higher. But that goes for if you have tons-o-cash or not.
