Re: FFXI is ruining my life

I think most players went through this period though, specially if this is your first MMOG.

The world is so freaking big and there are so many things to do that you get overloaded. But that's temporary, not many would go as far as to quit everything for the game, and if they did the fact of not being able to pay the fee would make them quit anyway.

In my case I spent like 3 months mostly doing nothing but play in my free time. I never neglected my job or anything, but I certainly spend most of my free time playing onry.

But after a few months you start organizing your time much better, you learn how to plan your game time acording to what you are gonna do that day. If you don't have anything better to do or that interests you then it's ok to spend your free time playing as long as you don't neglect your obligations like school or your health.

Think of it this way, if you study and get a good job you'll be able to play XI or whatever MMOG you are playing in a huge screen with the latest computer and sound systems money can buy, you can make a good gaming room if you own a house too.

So being succesful in life can also enhance your game experience.

Moral of the story, play as much as you can but go back to school so you can get a really good job, so you can play more and do other stuff, RL is very much like XI, except that in the real crafts are the way to go.

Re: FFXI is ruining my life

My advice is simple: If FFXI is so addictive to the point your real life is suffering, and possibly causing damage (mentally, socially, economically, etc) to you, it's time to either take a break/stop, or discipline yourself into managing your schedule better.

However, if you think you're just playing too much, but your real life isn't really being negatively affected (mentally, socially, economically, etc) then it's really your own decision. Who cares what other people think? Play for 2 hours; play for 8 hours; hell, don't even log off if you don't want to.

But don't get me wrong: the message I'm try to get across is, if you've really got nothing else to spend your time on, then what's the harm in spending your time in Vana'diel? But if you should be spending more time on studies/work/relationships, please learn self-control.

Re: FFXI is ruining my life

I think you guys are misunderstanding me. I am leaving school anyway. I only went back to school in september because I couldn't find a job during the summer. But now I'm already gotten a few call backs for very good jobs, so I make more money in 2 days than I do a week at school.
Plus, when I turn 17 next year my uncle is gonna put in a good word for me in the army (he's a Company Quartermaster Sergeant, 2nd highest NCO rank).
I already have qualifications, I got a few call backs for some jobs, and hopefully net year I'll be able to join the army (they're very selective).
Basically, the point of this thread was to say that on weekends and free time on weekdays, I do nothing else except play FFXI.

I think there are a couple of guys in my LS who have had their wives leave them because they only played ffxi all day. That is like, sad.

Well, ok then. Problem solved. If you join the army, you won't be playing this game very much, if at all.

Re: FFXI is ruining my life

I started playin FFXI little before the PS2 version was out (I got lucky but then I found out that couldn't get on till SE said so -_-)

But back to the story, I did play the game most of the time as a thf elvaan and was and A$$ but hey loved it. I had awakening when I looked at my life and wondering why I sit in front of a T.v. and then half naked mithra ran by. I sufferd during school and I wondered why I am paying money to fail. Since I went short on my schooling funds I dropped out and played game more and work alot more. I have a fiancee and she plays but not as much plays to spend some more time with me.

Well I don't know if this helps but play as long as you can afford it. . . You pay not just with your money, you pay with your life, health, your love life, and friends. If you can't afford to spend outside your life don't spend it in a fictional life.
Keep your friends and loved ones with you, FFXI is just like every other game, but in the end you might lose the girl in the end, and there isn't a true end yet.

Wow. Looks like you really want the easy way out of everything.

Going through life with your attitude will mean short term gratification and fun and long-term regrets.

There is no easy way. Not really.

Playing a game, dropping out of A-levels and looking at your future career with "ehh, maybe I'll join the army and die young in one of the current international conflicts" - does that really make you happy when you look at it like that? I mean, think about what your day-to-day reality will be like in, say 5 years from now if you continue as you are.

                  Just saying.

what are you talking about? I was going to drop out of shcool a few months ago, but I went back because I couldn't find a job anywhere. Now I have a job, I'm leaving.
Also, where do you think I live? The Irish Defence Force is a peace keeping army working for the UN. Rarely do we actually fight.
Also, I've been thinking about joining the army since I was 13, so it's kinda my dream, mkay

Things like that have happened with all MMOs, not just FFXI. It works both ways though. I got my wife into it and now she plays as much as I do. I know a few guys who have had problems with their marriage due to FFXI or gaming in general, but most of them were able to get things straight before it got too bad.

If I got to the point where I played so much, and my girlfriend left me, I'd lose touch with reality and I'd never return. As much as I like FFXI, the thought of that happening scares me.

FFXI can easily be compared to a drug. Some drugs, used in moderation, can give you rewarding experiences and lots of fun. But take that drug too often, and you're risking a great deal of your life. For me, the loss of my GF from FF, would be comparable to that of loss of life from a drug.

In that case, good luck, Amon.

I'm not going to run off with the topic of army/political discussions because that could get unintentionally ugly. I do wonder though, why you're worried about your possible addiction to an escapist game if all really is going as well as you tell yourself it is... there are other options besides army/unemployment. You could move out of your country, or re-locate within your country to somewhere with better prospects.

It's good to have something to absorb yourself in, once in a while. But like ther others have said, the escapism should be an enhancement to your life, not the sole content of it.

Why do people assume that others join ther army because they can't find a job? Is that the way it is in america? The army is a great job to have, and it pays great. The irish defence forces pays Privates 430Euros per week. The almost 1 and a half thousand euros a month. Imagine getting that at 17.
I do not wish to move out of my country because I am a patriot and wish to serve it. There are plenty of prospects where I live, just nothing that I would like to do as a lifetime career except the army.
I may have exaggerated with the title. I mean it's basically ruining my social life because it's all I do. If I'm on school holidays, I play it. After school, I play it. Weekends, I play it.

Traditionally in the US, military service is a typical path for low income individuals to get scholarships and get into universities. In other cases it is considered the only viable career path ect. So thus it's looked upon as a 'way out' in a lot of cases.
