Why do people assume that others join ther army because they can't find a job? Is that the way it is in america? The army is a great job to have, and it pays great. The irish defence forces pays Privates 430Euros per week. The almost 1 and a half thousand euros a month. Imagine getting that at 17.

Maybe in Ireland (Although I'm not sure what your draft requirements is if your country finds itself in a war like World War I & II) but here in America, the military path (non-comissioned officer) is usually reserved for those who have no where else to turn to or have no other prospects or in many cases, students need a scholarship to pay for college education. Many military families live just above the poverty line while a few actually are doing badly enough to qualify for welfare (which is sad IMHO)

My brother joined because he wanted a way to pay for college. I'm sure there are many reasons for joining, but one reason I know that is not reason to volunteer for military service is "because the job pays well." Only comissioned officers get paid well enough for them to consider staying in the military even during war time. And usually you become one (a) when in service during war time and participating in battles or (b) attending one of the major officer schools or "military academy." West Point is a good example.

I do not wish to move out of my country because I am a patriot and wish to serve it. There are plenty of prospects where I live, just nothing that I would like to do as a lifetime career except the army.
I may have exaggerated with the title. I mean it's basically ruining my social life because it's all I do. If I'm on school holidays, I play it. After school, I play it. Weekends, I play it.

Well, I think I assumed that you were considering the army due to lack of other employment options because of how your replies developed over this thread. If it's something you would truly feel happy and fulfilled doing, then I wish you the best of luck. I've only rarely met people who would feel like that about joining the army, which probably shows what kind of hippie pacifists I hang out with more than it shows anything about you.

OK.... wait wait wait wait.... 1 month and your complaining like that. Your either an idiot with no self control, a pre-teen that has no idea of time management, or some teen venting your little angst that you guys seem to get. It's a game. If you don't like the time your spending don't do it.

Take me, after 2 years of awsome fun on the game I'm on permanent hiatus because PLD's have lost there use in EXP and all i want is merits. I can't get merits while playing as a PLD and I don't like playing the other classes. So I, willed up some self control (didn't take much mind you) and stopped playing. Now I dip into the forums and peruse the website waiting for next nifty pld update.

If you can't stop yourself from playing a game, your going to have a rough life wrought with emotional pain at this rate. I reccomend you quit before the first monthly payment, if it's really "That BAD" already.

The problem isn't the game, it's you.

We don't draft over here and we don't go to war. In WWII we stayed peaceful, not fighting the Nazi's or anything, although we did provide fuel for allied aircrafts.
I want to join the army because I want to help people. It sounds stupid, probably, but I want to do it.

Mog, I don't get your reply. (Unless you meant it in a really generic sence, in which case I would totally and wholeheartedly agree! I do, indeed, have a lot to learn and so little time. Life sucks like that).

But back to the little offshoot (apologies to OP).

I do wonder though, why you're worried about your possible addiction to an escapist game if all really is going as well as you tell yourself it is... there are other options besides army/unemployment. You could move out of your country, or re-locate within your country to somewhere with better prospects.

It's good to have something to absorb yourself in, once in a while. But like ther others have said, the escapism should be an enhancement to your life, not the sole content of it.

So, MOG, send me a PM or something (let's not take this further into our pedantic rambles!) - what is it that you think I've got to learn? You have me intrigued here.

Seriously I'm addicted. I wake up, I eat breakfast, I play FFXI for a few hours, I eat dinner, I play some more FFXI, I watch some TV, then I play more FFXI My school works is suffering, I can't concentrate. I just sit there wondering how many mobs I can kill to get to the next lvl. What other spells I could get to make my WHM/RDM better, and where I could get more Gil.
I know we've all heard of World of Warcrack, but what about Final Ecstasy XI?

I had this problem last school year. The key is to think to yourself which is more important: gil, or grades? Last year I didn't do many extracerricular (sp?) activities, so I had a lot of free time. Although, that free time was scattered out, and you can't play FFXI in scattered intervals, right?

So what I ended up doing was playing FFXI in the evenings and poseponing the homework to the very last minute (AKA, sometime after my parents thought I was asleep) and doing it then. Although because I was tired I rushed it, and it suffered anyways. I got through the year ok, although I didn't feel very good about being a procrastinator, and my parents thought I was playing too much (mmkay, 3 hours at once is not a lot to me, but apparently it is to them).

This year I'm doing basically the same activities, but a few side things are added on. I have a lot of other things that forcefully break up my time, rather than me setting when they do (like trips, friend issues, and school activities) so when I need to decide between homework and FFXI, homework first a bit easier. I suggest trying to break up that free time a bit more, so that when you have to leave FFXI for something else when you could easily extend your playing time, it won't be so hard.

But be sure to take everyone else's advice too, I'm just a sophomore gaming addict

I'm a little confused, just read through this entire thread. In the very first post you said, that you do absolutely nothing but play FFXI. ...in fact in your words exactly,

But now, farther down the road of posts, all of a sudden you were going to drop out of school...anyways...and are headed to the army and all this other wonderful stuff..

So what happened to the addiction?

First it was all day all the time, then it slowly turned into, "No, well I really only play when I have free time and on the weekends." Make up your mind! Do you play 8-12 hours a day every day or don't you?

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk here, but on a few levels, your story kept changing.
