Re: FFXI is ruining my life

    A) You get tired of FFXI
    B) You realize how bad FFXI is hurting your real life
    C) You keep playing
    D) All of the above

One of those is bound to happen, just try to take control of your life. That's all you can really do. I rember when Everquest was referred to Evercrack and I was just on the game ATON for 2 years until I finally got tired of it and quitted. Now I'm back with FFXI but not as crazy as Everquest where I was dreaming of how to get better gear or what spells to get next . . . etc.

yeah I'm the same. So, if I'm still like this in a few months, then it's something serious. But what if I can't pay one month, and I just sit in my room all day replaying the memories of FFXI in my head, and I try to jump out my 1st floor window hoping for someone to pass and Raise me or something

Is there anything in your life preventing you from not playing FFXI? Maybe your life isn't worth not ruinning in the first place.

How very considerate... Obviously, there are things that one considers of value in life regardless of whether they have the ability to prevent you from playing FFXI. With most people, the kid-in-a-candy-store thing wears off after a certain period of time, with some people it doesn't. This would be classified as an addiction. Your brain is consumed with a new problem--mine does this. If I have a new project to do, I find myself thinking about it while I'm doing other things--it becomes a distraction. My brain doesn't like unsolved puzzles. You probably just need to get your mind adjusted to the concept that FFXI is an unsolvable problem/problem not worth solving (completely).

Things that are of value to the OP appear to be school. FFXI doesn't interfere with viewing of the Glowing Box known as TV yet which is a testament to it's power. I know people who watch it for hours on end--from the time they get off work to the time they go to bed. Most of them wouldn't consider it an addiction, but heaven forbid it be an interactive medium... It has been said that Cathode Ray Tubes produce a "hypnotic" state in people (probably by Faraday Shield wearers, but still), and that it is thusly inherently addictive just to watch the pretty colors.

I'm assuming you're not in College or your "addiction" might cause you to (frequently) skip class to play. Since you are probably young and still living at home, if you cannot control your playing, your parents will probably step in once they see your grades. Worst case scenario: you get 1/2 semester behind and punishment/correction from your primary caregivers. That's the wonderful thing about not being responsible for yourself yet.

Of course, if you are in College/post-secondary, take note of the fact that you still actually attend class. A good portion of college coursework can be successfully completed even having only gone to the lecture (I think I heard that it was a guaranteed D or better if you only attend lecture and do no outside studying).

If you're addicted then quit cold turkey. Sometimes people have addictive personalities, and if things are suffering after only a month, then I think its time to avoid the source before you become more entrenched. After all, if its only your first month, well, there's a lot more for you to develope, missions, other jobs, crafts and god forbid that you join an already demanding HNMLS or a end-game group. There would in my opinion be no saving you.

So either quit or run the risk of being trapped in even more than you are now. You can still play, you just need to get control and control usually doesn't come easy.

uh yeah, I don't know how the american school system works, but I'm 16 and I've been in a college since I was 11. But now since I'm 16, I am not legally obligated to go to school. If I just skip school, I won't get paid from the government for that week (yah they pay us to go to school). But I've already skipped a few days and my head of year says he doesn't want me to come back after hallowe'en so I guess I'm gonna go out and get a job.
btw I skip school cos school suxorz! I just sleep the days I'm off. pfft, 9am is waaaaay too early

Just curious, where do you live? And school is much easier than work, I'd suggest going back.

IMHO, as long as you can find a balance in your schedule, then you should be find. I spend hours and hours on this game too, but now I usually party long hours on weekends. On weekdays I only play an hour each night. If you are addicted to this game, eventually you would need to find your way to balance your schedule.

If you're quitting school at 16 you're in for a rude awakening when you try to enter the working world.

                      Seriously, go back to school.

If you take a break, you aren't missing much. I played FFXI from NA PC release for 12 months. Then took a 12 month break, and came back. Not much had changed (aside from the economy being shot to hell).

You aren't missing anything if you take time off.

Re: FFXI is ruining my life

Whoa! 8 hours a day! Thats a bit over the top. I usually spend 2 hours every other day on ffxi. I love to draw, chat with friends (in real life -_-), get outside and run. FFXI isnt as addicting to me as people say it is. Ya i want 75 this but it gets repetitive and I can break away from that for a few days. Ill probably end up quitting FFXI this year because parties will get to repetitive for me.

                          I dont watch anime. Sorry.

Ah well that's cool then...I just meant getting paid for school is better, cause school is easier than work...and taking it easy for as long as you can before you gotta go out on your own is good. ^^

American school is Primary School (starting around age 5 for 5-6 years), Jr. High for 2-3 years, High School for 4 years. Students in the US are not legally obligated to attend school after 16 either, but we don't get paid to go to school--we pay for it (or rather parents do). You simply call College what we call Jr. High/High School. University is what I'm referring to as college. I guess they don't place as much emphasis on school in Ireland as they do here. Some of it is indoctrination, granted, but there's a lot of useful information as well. In the US it's very difficult to get a job other than the most rudimentary (e.g. Fast Food) without a completed HS education. Most US Schools offer technical programs to 16-18 year olds that they may take in lieu of university preparatory classes. Often these are set up like apprenticeships where the student actually goes to a local business (generally a factory) and learns to operate various machines.

Without one or the other of these types of school, even in Ireland, it might be difficult to find a job. Of course, I think Ireland has socialized labor, so it might be easier there--you still might get stuck flipping burgers for short money though. Of course there's also the jobs that generally pay well but that most people won't do--Garbage Collection, Bio-waste disposal, Sewer/Septic sanitation, Gravedigger (I had a friend who did this... when he said "corpse juice" I almost puked. Apparently, when you have to move an old coffin that was improperly buried, liquid accumulates inside and it isn't very pleasant), etc. On the minus side, most garbage collection jobs start in the wee hours of the morning, so if 9am is to early, 5am probably won't be your cup of tea either. Most outside jobs (construction, gravediggers, etc.) actually work during the day since it's much easier to see what you're doing when it's light out. That's why they start when the sun comes up--to make best use of the light while they have it. Most night jobs are factory or service jobs--the former requiring training, the latter requires for instance to be fairly competent at drawing a pint, or know your way around a kitchen. Neither job pays so well, and you'll probably get stuck doing bar back or dishes--neither of which makes as much as the others. Of course, since you're in Ireland, you could always sell souvenirs, wait on, or perform various tourist services for snooty rich Americans (or faux-riche as I like to call the Credit Card People).

It seems as though you may have bigger problems than an FFXI addiction. Perhaps you need to re-examine the direction you want your life to take. FFXI is not a valid career choice in most countries unless you intend to become a gilseller... and I think you'd probably make better money in Fast Food.
