  • Level 6 Besieged - Asura

    Well, we just had our first level 6 besieged on Asura (that I know of). At the start of the fight, the Generals of the beastmen had some things to say to the 'smoothskins'. I must say that I really appreciate the motivational comments from the generals when the fight begins. It adds a bit of dimension to the game. We were missing one of the generals at the beginning and lost at least 3 more before the Mamool Ja finally retreated.

    The temporary items are just incredible and really help to make Beseiged more enjoyable, imho. It appears that the temporary items are distributed by the generals at the beginning of the battle. Since we started the fight without the Mithran general (I don't know her name), we were without the reraise potion and any elixirs.

    The lag continues to be bad (I forgot to see how many people were in the zone for the fight). I don't have the greatest PC for running the game, but I do have TONS of filters on and all of the special effects turned off. As it is, I just expect to have poor performance during besieged.

    Overall, the battle lasted ~30 mins. I happened to get KO'd near the end of the fight and was waiting for the mobs to move so that I could reraise when all of a sudden, I saw the message that the Mamool Ja have retreated. I immediately accepted the reraise but expected to receive 0 XP/IS (since I was KO'd when the beastmen retreated). I was pleasantly surprised to see that I got full XP/IS for the fight! I actually died twice during the fight (both times were in the last 1/2 of the battle), so I am guessing that you will receive full rewards if you A) Play a significant role in the battle and B) Don't home point during the fight.

    As a WHM, I primarily focused on keeping my alliance alive. I would guess that I used ~2500 MP throughout the fight (primarily Cure Vs and Raises). I threw a few diagas and banishgas to wipe the NMs shadows (although, in retrospect, I doubt that this is even necessary with the massive number of people who must be pummeling the NMs). Never once through the battle was I actually able to target my alliance members. I relied on typing my cures in manually and hoping that I was close enough for the spell to take effect. At times, when I would check the map, the alliance wouldn't even show up, only my teammates would... It is unfortunate that we have to suffer through this kind of performance when the Besieged event is so darned fun!

    The reward for success at level 6: 1200 XP/IS!

    Overall I am pleased with the changes that SE has made to Besieged. Even if the changes weren't made, I would still participate at every opportunity simply because I like the idea of protecting the city (and more importantly, the Astral Candescence) from the beastmen in the surrounding regions.

    Well, the bonus items the update itself said the items you get depends on what NPCs are present before the besiege. So to get all the items would mean saving all the NPCs that get captured.

      I didn't see those notes in the update (could you post a link to them?)! So it's not dependent upon the Generals that are present, but the rest of the NPCs in the zone? That's a cool perspective and it adds extra incentive to rescue prisoners when Besieged is over!

      *edit - Nvm, found the details:
      When Besieged begins, all participating players will be given temporary items.
      *There are 15 temporary item varieties, corresponding to the 15 NPCs that can be taken prisoner during Besieged.
      *Unused temporary items will disappear when Besieged ends.

        Interesting - Carbuncle defeated a level 6 undead swarm last night and we only got 1000 exp and IS. We started with all five generals but 3 of them were defeated during the fight. The main temp items I notced missing were the reraise and ether.

        Giant and Wizard Drinks last a good long while but not necessarily the whole beseiged. I didn't time them exactly though. A NIN in my party with giant drink on did Mijin Gakure for a little over 2000 damage to one of the NMs (I think it was Lamia No. 4).

        Aside from Medusa, there was also a qutrub NM I hadn't seen before, Pining Abazohn (or something like that), who we did manage to kill. They also brought some Doomed type monsters (aka undead toads), I forget the names; those were pretty easy to kill. Medusa still had about 2/3 hp when they retreated, I think.

        It's nice to see that dead people can get exp/IS now... did you accept reraise before or after the victory cutscene?

          I'm not sure about the duration of the Giant's and Wizard's drinks, but they seem to be ~10 mins. I'll have to time their duration during the next besieged.

          I accepted the reraise just before the CS (immediately after I saw the message that 'The enemy forces have retreated'). I fully expected to see the message: "You cannot perform that action at this time" when I was trying to reraise.

          Perhaps the difference in the XP/IS reward is due to the number of NMs defeated? As I recall, the Mamool Ja retreated after we killed their last General. The update details did state that:

          A bonus will be given to all participants at the end of Besieged for defeating the notorious monsters that lead an enemy force.
          I doubt that anyone raised after the victory CS will receive any XP/IS rewards.

            Its currently believed (not 100% sure) that regular NMs give an extra 20 exp/IS per person when killed and the Beastmen King (Queen) gives 200 extra exp/IS when killed. Not exactly sure on the figures.

              Oh, bloody hell. As if there weren't already too many people jeopardizing the win by abandoning generals to zerg the HNMs.

              They should have made the bonuses dependent on speed or surviving generals, instead. Some NMs are worth killing, others are not, but with a system like that people will throw themselves at medusa for hours to reduce her life by 2% while someone else is doing the work of actually winning the beseiged.

                I think that is the whole intent and purpose. It's either full offense, full defense or a little bit of both.

                You can accomplish a lot if everyone involved come up with a strategy. For example, having an iron defense to keep things in stalemate and then having your "calvary" or what I call your offensive minded individuals charging the flanks of the enemies or even going around the whole mess and taking on the enemy "leaders."

                There's a lot of thinking involved and it's not just about keeping your generals alive either.

                  With 500+ people divided by a language barrier, the chance of getting any coherent overall strategy going is basically zero.

                  Theoretically a large LS could bring 50 people and coordinate them to accomplish *something*, maybe, but between the unpredictable timing of Besieged and the meager rewards, it seems unlikely anyone would bother. Furthermore, the other 500 people who were doing something else or getting in the way would get just as much reward as the LS, even if their plan succeeded.

                  The generals provide something for strategies to stabilize around, in addition to being the objective of the battle.

                    I participated in a few more and the max XP/IS that I've received for one fight is 1280. The Walahra Turban is within my grasp now
