Reader's Digest version: I work hard to get behind Banishing Gate #3 with a bunch of strangers, log out for the night, and find out the next day that 10+ RMTs are doing their AF runs too. This bites.

Last night, I had trouble sleeping. I had soloed my Garlaige Coffer Key for my AF while exp'ing as BST in the Garlaige basement, so I decided that I might as well hang around the Banishing Gates in hopes of getting to one of the coffer areas.

While waiting at the first banishing gate, I was joined by a lvl 51 Hume RDM who was also hoping to do the same for his AF. We were able to get past the first gate due to a 66 SAM who was helping another RDM (this one a Mithra) with her coffer. Unfortunately, the Mithra RDM actually needed her key still, so it appeared that we wouldn't have their help getting past one of the deeper gates.

I was just poking around gate #2, trying to decide what to do, when I decided to see how the Hume RDM had fared. Unfortunately for him, he had drawn aggro near gate #3 and was now face down on the cold, stone floor.

I had a bit of fun using the nearby Jellies to take out the nearby Explosure and Droma just so I could cast Raise on him, and then take out some nearby skeletons to help him avoid blood aggro. Much to our surprise, the SAM and Mithra RDM from earlier came by after a while. We decided we would all work together to try and get past gate #3.

I volunteered myself for handling the pressure plate in the furthest corner. I thought I could handle it as easily as the others, since the room just had a couple of Jellies. I simply charmed one, and used to attack the other while I waited for everyone else to get into position.

As soon as I saw the message that the banishing gate was opening, I started to make my run. And that's when the jelly my pet was fighting decided to do a TP move. An AoE TP move. One that took 250 HP off of me, dropping me to yellow. Given that I was at the furthest plate, I felt I didn't have time to heal myself. I had my Reraise Gorget up. What's the worst that can happen?

Well, as it turned out, the Mithra RDM had drawn aggro from one of the Jellies right at the gate. Her SAM escort engaged the jelly, but that didn't keep the Mithra RDM from running well past the gate... and into 3 Fallen Officers. The other RDM had apparently died in all the commotion. I got beat down by 2 Fallen Soldiers that followed me on my way to the gate. The SAM was left alone to face the jelly with 3 fallen players nearby.

Looking around, I could only see a Haunt that looked to be far enough away. So I accepted Reraise and tried to determine how I could best help the SAM. All of a sudden, a Fallen Officer runs past me and starts attacking the SAM. The end result was the SAM dying, and I was cowering a short distance away, hoping that the Fallen Officer would despawn.

Well, my story has drawn on long enough. So I'll shorten the rest. The Fallen Officer despawned, and then respawned while I was still weakened. With the help of a Funguar familiar, I was somehow able to kill the DC Fallen Officer and help raise the two RDMs (the SAM had decided to HP by that time).

It wasn't a perfect excursion. But given the pick-up nature of this group, I was quite satisified that all 3 coffer seeking players had made it past the gate, were now alive, and staying aggro free. The coffer wasn't back there (which probably saved us the hassle of trying to figure out which of us 3 would get to claim it). I was content just to be back there. I could always log off, and check back the next day. VICTORY!

... but alas, every high is followed by a low.

When I logged in today to check for the coffer, I spotted one player behind gate #3 also. But it wasn't one of the two I worked together with last night. No big deal. I log out, and check back a few hours later. That's when I notice 3 other players with him. And the names are familiar. It was a group of RMT accounts I had spotted leveling through Crawler's Nest weeks ago. When I turned a corner, I spotted yet another party of RMT accounts sitting just inside the gate.

It makes sense. Getting 4 warm bodies to cooperate with opening banishing gates should be no problem for a group of RMTs. It's disturbing that I'm now having to wait in a spot with at least 10 RMTs also waiting for the same thing as me. Given the 4 other jobs which need this same coffer (MNK, PLD, RDM, and WHM), I may be waiting here a while. /sigh

        You're right. It's a quasi-rant. I added a quick summary at the beginning.

Please, feel sorry for me. I need your pity.

Sorry about your luck with your Garlaige coffer. It's one of the more annoying ones to get. I just put it off until I could get in there with three friends, which worked out really well.

Hope you find your coffer soon.

Sorry to hear. One suggestion I can make is to familiarize yourself with one of the spawn points and park yourself on top of it. You might get lucky and have it respawn on top of you (I recommend having a macro to /trade "Garlaige Coffer Key" <t> prepared for this).

Re: From heights of joy to valleys of disappointment

This does suck! I spent 4 hours trying to get this coffer for RDM. Just as I got past the gate, started walking down the hallway, I noticed somebody just ahead of me. They had already been camping the spawn and got it right away. So I spent the next 4 hours soloing DC Bones and leveling Dagger, Sword, and Enhancing Magic. I think I gained 2k+ EXP, about 60 skill points in each weapon, and about 3 full points in Enhancing Magic. (That damned Enhancing Magic leveled so slow!!) Over all wasn't a bad night, but it was 4 hours I could have spent doing something else.

Later I've gone down that same corridor to help a PLD get a piece of his AF, and it took him like two or three nights to finally find the coffer. Suddenly made my 4 hours of kill'n stuff sound like a walk in the park.

The only rough one for me on DRG was Boyahda. The coffer areas are so packed, and keys so plentiful in xp that it can be tough to get one for AF.

I HATE Garliage coffer, so I sympathise. I can't remember if my whm had one there (I have a feeling whm does) but if so out of 3 jobs with AF, all 3 were there. I shudder every time someone says help me with Garliage coffer...

                    WHM does.

I soloed the key on bombies as SMN, got a couple of buds to drop me behind G2 in exchange for getting them some BLU spells, and got the coffer 30 minutes later.

So many people hated me for that.

I've had to do Garlaige three times now, so I guess I'm used to it, but really the only tough part is getting through the doors. If you don't have a few people you can round up to do that, of course, that's difficulty enough to make it a frustrating situation.

My ls do things like this as ls events. We all pile off to wherever and go skill up/get keys/run around getting lost/try to make something really annoying into something fun. We've just been in Qufim helping a BLU get some magic and tomorrow there's a coffer trip to Davoi and an NM hunt in Delkfut.

We did Garlaige recently, getting af for me and an rdm - I'm trying my best to avoid the place generally and while I'm all for being self-sufficient, I have my limits. Anyone who manages to solo it has much kudos from me .

I have heard that those who celebrate life
walk safely amongst the wild animals.
When they go into battle, they remain unharmed,
the animals find no place to attack them
and weapons are unable to harm them.
Why? Because they find no place for death in them.

Yay! I finally got my coffer last evening. When I logged back on, the coffer was waiting right by the zone line. It appeared that the RMT horde managed to get all the coffers that they needed (I shudder to think how many RMT PLD, RDM, WHM, BLM and RNGs were there over the past 24 hours) and had moved on already.

I used to have a wider support network for things like this. But that was a good 2 years ago. I remember helping at least 3 different players reach these coffer spots in the past. Unfortunately, many of those friends have quit the game entirely, and the few others who still play don't tend to be on during the small windows of opportunity my schedule affords me these days.

Garlaige wasn't that hard coffer and chest wise. Someone gave me the key (IE let me lot when they got the key to drop). Coffer wise, I tagged along with some friends when they were doing G1 and had them open the gates for me. Eldimine(sp) was the hard one. @_@ Resulting in my friend's level 75 WHM to die and delevel. >.< *guilty consious*
