The entire Final Fantasy series has done little more than reinvision thousands of mythological and real life concepts. Nothing comes to mind of what they've actually created from raw imagination. Not even tonberries.

Umm, cactaurs are unique from what I recall.

Cactuars would be in that "little more" area, as they were created from a random doddle. Even then you can see where the inspiration for it come from.

It's 2006. Very little these days is original. Everything is something else re-imagined. No reason to get all up in arms about it. :/

Didn't say NASA's rockets, I was reffering to a set of NASA's new concept designs for a new spaceshuttle. One concept design was very pryamid like in shape.

Is that image really a good representation of WoW art? Ugh. It's funny, everyone I've talked to about WoW has raved about the colorful, stylish graphics (I've never played it, or even seen screenies til today). That image is not my idea of stylish graphics. I think I'll stick with my beloved FFXI.

Take a look at the overall graphics of FFXI vs WoW. WoW may have a newer engine capable of more but who cares if what we see looks like Looney Tunes. There is no refinement there is no art.
FFXI seems to me to have a refined color palette. The designers of FFXI always seek to make things fit in to the world they have created.They take an idea and bring it to conclusion, whereas WoW has always seemed to me it takes it's ideas and gets them to the good enough stage and then they are done and onto the next thing.
In it's simplest terms
FFXI = Esthetic design philosophy
Wow = utilitarian design philosophy

This is what I was thinking. I never really looked into WoW, but now that I see the two together, it strikes me how visually pleasing a game FFXI is.

I guess a chocobo egg being imported to WOW then being horribly vandalized doesn't concern me too much. I loved the shot of joust to whoever posted it. I felt a bit of nastalgia seeing that.

1. Almost 7 million subscribers is going to have a higher number of idiots than a game with 500,000 even if the ratio of idiots to average players remains static.

True enough although I suspect since Wow is easier to level and has a better instant gratification factor this increases their number of imature gamer percentage also. Some of my friends play WOW and some play FFXI so I know the entire playerbase is not composed of asshats, but I have discovered they tend to be very visible when they pop up.

2. Unless you have made it to 60, earned your zone flags for Ony, MC, BWL, and Naxx and raided successfully in those zones after many months of mastering the encounters then you should really shut the fuck up and refrain from making yourself look like you're an idiot commenting on something you have no damned knowledge of.

I fear that in this instance Grizzlebeard you make yourself look foolish. Telling someone they have no right to hold an opinion because they disagree with you is realy disapointing in an otherwise well thought out post. Arguing he's misinformed is one thing telling him he's not allowed to comment is truely repugnant.

3. Where is it touted as a beginner's/casual MMO? Whilst levelling may be done solo and is significantly more accessible to people without 5-8 hours to waste looking for group once you reach max level and start raiding most casuals/beginners usually roll a new class participate in PvP or grind rep for additional gear rewards.

I'm sure if we looked hard enough any MMO is going to be listed as a yes for the casual gamer since at least in the starting points it doesn't take much time. Building to endgame in any MMO not just in FFXI or WOW is usually where the time sink gets bigger. We're not really required to spend more than casual time, but buildup takes much longer if we don't.

4. Have you experienced all content the game has to offer across all level ranges for each race on both Alliance and Horde side? If you haven't then once again kindly close your mouth and sit on your hands.

By this principle the only ones here permitted to have an opinion on FFXI are those with Mats cap. I don't think complete mastery of every aspect is a reasonable requirement in order to hold an opinion of virtues and faults for a game.

I think you are right, in principle. However, I would like to submit that going through all of WoW's content for both sides shouldn't take more than about 1 year (rough estimate). Players can hit 60 in a couple of weeks. Actually getting the drops for tiered armor takes time (especially if you rolled a popular class).

At least they don't have mount raising in WoW. I'd be curious how you would "raise" the mechanical raptors and felsteeds, tho :p

Meh, can't really say.. I mean how else are you going to design a mount that's a bird, but yeah I think it looks more like a magical ostrich than a chocobo ^^

I played WoW during the first seven months or so after launch, and I did every bit of content that exisited at the time. They have added a considerable amount since then, but it's still possible to get through everything in about a year's time if you play a lot.

That's not a dig at WoW, mind you. But it does take more time if nothing else to get to all of FFXI's content.

If you ever watched Michel palins Travel shows, you would have seen camel and ostrich racing.

On the thread, what ever point it has. People seem to have forgoten the length of the FF franchise (first installment released in Japan in 1987 (19 years ago!!!!)

Alot of the original jobs, magic spells, item types, avatars, mobs etc etc were all conceived way before any of the other MMO's were even considered, and not forgetting gil and Chocobos!!!!!

Incidently slightly off thread but does anyone know the exact rlease date of the Japan version of FF1 and if anything is going to happen next year to celebrate 20 years of the franchise!!
