If it's crowded, you may want to come back later. Crowds can make it very difficult and frustrating to try to stay behind a turning witch. Keep in mind the event will be going for weeks, and the only part you need a partner for is the pitchforks, not the exorcisms.

If you *are* going to try to do it while it's crowded, I recommend at least 5-6 types of treats so you don't get insanely frustrated. Ginger cookies, acorn cookies, cinna-cookies, goblin and bubble chocolates and melon pies all work, I assume other pies would too. Cookies are the cheapest, but with crowds, it may take several hours to get both hats with just cookies - and it will *definitely* take quite a few hours to get all the pumpkin/horror heads and trick/treat staffs, if you don't have them already.

So what should I be wearing while trying for Treat Staff I? Pumpkin head I, II, or Trick Staff I, II?

EDIT: To answer my own question there doesn't seem to be ANY order to get the items. It's completely random. I had a friend who got Pumkin Head II on their first try and another got Trick Staff II, I finally got Treat Staff II after more then 100 ginger cookies traded. And I never received Treat Staff I. I also don't have Horror Head II, not that I want it ^^

It took me one try to figure out how this guide is slightly off.

Then I remembered reading this post quoted below.

I didn't get caught by Selma, but a couple of times I could swear she was staring straight at me. Could it be a matter of proximity as well as line of sight? I stood somewhat far away.

As did I. You stand far enough away, you can still hear them and they could be looking right at you without detecting you! I did it with out a problem. Only thing I did was timing getting my costume for when they were near by and I didn't need to run and find them.

It also works much better for a crowd, everyone stands back away from the NPC and no one losses their costume :D

As I said I got Pumpkin Head II while wearing Trick Staff I, and I have a friend who got Trick Staff II while wearing Pumpkin Head II My guess is that the rules that might have applied last year aren't applying this year.

Basically just keep trading sweets and you'll get something

I had SO MUCH fun doing this; I didn't really care what I got!

... just thought I'd run around for laughs; then got addicted and spent several hours playing.

Got Pumpkin Head II when wearing last year's regular Pumpkin Head.

Then got Horror Head when wearing Pumpkin Head II.

Then got Trick Staff.

Then found a partner to do the Pitchfork quest with. Did normal quality in Bastok, HQ in Windy.

I would love to get the hat, but I messed it up somehow... might try again today.

I had loads of fun too ^^, I got Pitchfork in Bastok and the +1 version in Sandy, and I finished off my trick and treating in my home of Windurst. It's always great to see everyone out of Jeuno and back in towns for the events.

Update on declaring the Coven Hat to be EXP gear:

1. Ding 71 SMN!
2. Shortly thereafter I discover that odd levels switch the Coven hat's effect over to HP instead of MP.

Ah well, I'll save it for when I ding 72, I guess. Haven't really been this disappointed since Godzilla bit off Optimus Prime's head. Here I was hoping to go all "bloodstained sweater Mr. Rogers" on stuff.

Since even and odd levels seem to change the effect of Coven Hat, we may want to test it out on underlevelled WAR and the like. We've been assuming that they did nothing for these jobs, but is it possible the hat was just tested on a WAR who was already at a level where the MP effect was active instead of HP?

I honestly think that to get an item for staff and hat you need to wait a day before being able to get them...

A couple of quick questions (well maybe 2 or 3) about this halloween event.
Okay, firstly..... I have read over the instructions and have a general idea what to do.
Q1: - How do you obtain the witches hat?
I assume you just keep handing sweets to the NPCs in costume until you get one? Is that correct?
But are these hats good for anything though? (well apart from the usual def 1 increase) Is there anything really special about them, or are they just a gimic, a fad?
Q2: - Part of the event says that some sweets don't work. So how do you know which ones to use? I have a couple stacks of apple pies, so I'm going to try that and see what happens.
I also read that you can't use the same sweet over and over, and that it has to be different. But can you trade the same sweet to different NPCs?
So for e.g. - can you trade an apple pie to a skeleton npc, then an apple pie to a yag npc? Or do they have to be different for every npc?
Q3: - Regarding the lanterns you get for your Mog House.
Again..... are they just a gimic, or is there anything special about them?
