Welcome to FFXI, it's not exactily a simple game, but your rewards will be greater than the time you put into the game.

I'm on the Ragnarock server, so I can't help you ingame at all, but there are plenty of people who will answer any question you have.

I have started to learn how to do skillchains and magic bursts and people have given me these crazy diagrams which i am supposed to understand, but I dont.
So what spells do you use with which special moves to do magic bursts?

Try these guides on Skillchaining and Magic Bursting.

I suggest you level Thief to 15 for Treasure Hunter and sub it to Red Mage. I liked going to Tahrongi Canyon for Saruta Cotton, Sarutabaruta for Silk Thread, and Giddeus or Gustaberg on the hill for Beehive Chips. Another place of note is Konschtat for Sheep Leather (you have to synth the skins to leather, cheap, level 2 craft).

You may encounter Spiny Spipi while Silk Thread hunting (50k cape drop), or Stray Mary (600k instrument drop) while in Konschtat. Hoo Mjuu the Torrent is also in Giddeus (300k staff drop), but he is heavily camped.

good place to farm gil...well the only place or thing i know how to do to farm gil if fish! Fishing is the only place you can reel in gil. If you do fish sell fish to either cooks or the fishing guild to get top gil...

Or you can always start gardening. Tree Cuttings/Saplings+2 earth or dark crystals=Earth ores or Dark ores. Sell those at 300kto 380k you can make upwards to 1mil+ if you have patients and the needed pots and gardening enhancements.

but if you want to start cheap...Minning and Wood coppin are great gil for lower lvls and it helps raising your goldsmithing, Smithing and woodworking if you have the right crystals with you.

I am already growing grain seeds. Where do I get tree cuttings other than the ah to begin to grow them? I have the treant bulbs but it has never asked me if i wanted to plant them. How do you grow a sapling?

I'm pretty sure Tree Saplings grow from sapling...I've purchased all mine from the AH because i could afford it...

Tree cuttings are obtained from the AH or Goobbues. Passhow is good.

Tree cutting + no crystals = tree sapling.

Treant bulbs can't be gardened. They are an alchemy item.

                      Re: Hi New to FFXI

I was farming the thread leeches and the goobbues last night. I was getting the boyhada moss from the goobbues but no tree cuttings. I plan on farming there again tonight or going to giddeus. I have post traumatic stress disorder from the marshlands though, I died twice last night while farming there.
At one point a paladin came and offered to raise me for 10k. I said no because that defeats the whole purpose of farming. Some in my friend's LS came and raised me.
I have never had anyone offer to raise me for a fee. Is that normal?

                        Re: Hi New to FFXI

It used to be pretty common for people to charge a fee to Raise. Not everyone does it, though; most do it to keep people from constantly pestering them for Raises.

                          Re: Hi New to FFXI

In my case I wasnt pestering anyone. I was just laying there dead waiting for the guy who was coming to raise me. I haven't had anyone ask me for gil before, I could see if I asked them to raise.

Another question I have is about gil sellers and gil selling. I have been finding a lot of articles about it in my research of farming. Is it actually illegal to do on FFXI (dont worry, i barely make enough gil to survive, i m not gonna sell it )? How does SE know who the gil sellers and buyers are? shouldnt it be obvious because they transfer 1 or 2 million in gil over and over again?

                            Re: Hi New to FFXI

it's against the TOS to exchange game items (characters, gil) for real life currency so yes. your second question is the hard part. SE needs to prove, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that they are indeed gil sellers before they will take action. Simply moving large ammount of money around, although very suspicious, is not a guaranteed indicator.

                            Thanks Yyg!

If you are being killed while farming, you probably shouldn't be farming there. I've never died while farming. The point is to target a mob that you can slaughter with ease so you can kill many of them and get more chances for a drop.

Last night, I was farming Couerl Whiskers to make Power Bows. Someone suggested that I farm in The Sanctuary of Zi'tah, as whiskers drop easily. I tried a few up there, but killing them took longer than I liked. I moved down to Meriphataud Mountains where the drops were less common, but I could kill them faster. I got my stack in no time flat.

Oh, and thanks for buying one of those Power Bows, neighbortaru!
