Thinking about playing FFXI

I have a few questions about FFXI. Like is it similar to Lineage2 where you could constantly be killing monsters non stop for a month to finally save up for one piece of armor that used to be your level? Is there a guy macroing killing monsters 30 levels below him every 20 steps?

I also run on 56k and had no problems playing Dark Age of Camelot dual logged in relic raids etc. The servers are in japan i thought i read so will i have troubles playing the game or will my character run slower than others?(Ultima Online)

It can be, but usually not. Depending on your level and what you're looking for, some pieces of gear are extremely expensive to acquire. You never "need" any of those items; at virtually all levels there are usually acceptable replacements for the best, rarest gear.

Rarely. FFXI only gives experience points for defeating enemies when they're within shouting distance of your level (anywhere from 5-11 levels below you, the exact amount of spread allowed before you stop earning XP increases slowly as you gain levels). Considering that most jobs in FFXI solo poorly at best, you rarely if ever see players picking on weaker enemies on their own unless they need something specific from an enemy like crafting materials.

I've never heard of anyone on 56k who had issues with regular play, though during larger raid-style events like Dynamis you might experience a bit of lag. More important is your system specifications, though, particularly on a PC, where a slow computer can seriously degrade your gameplay experience.

Well I've never played Lineage, but I can answer your questions...

First, though (some) monsters drop gil, it's hardly enough for you to save up and a buy any armor worth while. It's much more practical to go hunting for items of value, and sell them on the Auction House, aka Farming. Crystals are a good example of this. As a low level character, you will gather loooots of crystals that can be sold for decent money.

Though broadband is usually preferred for online games, FFXI supports 56k connections, so there shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as your computer is actually able to play the game okay.

no. 56k will just mean you have more lag in certain crowded areas than others, but otherwise the game is quite playable.

macro killing monsters would be pretty rare. I don't think majority of players have access to those kind of bots. i don't even know where to look for one.
.. and no don't post where they're from i don't want to know o.O;;

Only on occasion when you're solo exp'ing will you run into somebody who is out-camping you, and when that happens it's easy to move to another spot so you don't bump heads quite as often. Vanadiel is huge and there are lots of areas to level.
