I think of this game as more social, than a grind.

Its the community that makes the game not the levels. :D

Um...Honestly? If you just want to grind go play some random Korean mmo. They'll give you more grinding than you know what to do with. If you're not so great at socialising this may not be a good choice. Just about everything from mid to end game requires a group of people, and random help is unreliable.

They will probably be hundreds of thousands of people still playing till the day they shut down the game, which I assume will be a very long time. Look how long EQ has been going and UO.

                  Re: is it worth it?

Personally, I wouldn't recommend it (noted exception is WoW which seems to "own" the world of mmo).

Instead, look for new releases, and try jumping on a promising new title - the most fun in this game, is when everyone's a n00b and the world is unexplored and frightning. I did so with FFXI and EQ, and both times, the most fun was the first 2 years.

FFXI is, in addition, overloaded with real money traders that are ruining the fun for just about everyone by flooding the game with money that players can buy, thus upping prices on everything.

SE has shot themselves in the foot by creating a player agreement document that makes it impossible for them to take action against these RMT.

You will also find that the user interface, at least for PC, is horrid. It's laggy, slow, and very uncustomizeable. It's functional, but it takes alot of time to grow accostumed to it.

Right now, I'm just grinding, and doing fun stuff with friends in ff until Age of Conan comes out.

Well, that's a ringing endorsement if I've ever heard one.

Well, that's some blatant post count raising if I've ever seen it. Hey Kutch, how bad has it gotten on Leviathan with RMT? I left originally because of those jerks, they made it impossible to get moneys.

                        Re: is it worth it?

I have actually seen a mass lowering of prices on everything on my server. Scorp Harness is going for 3mil, Irique thingy (that level 72 BLM armor) is about 1mil, astrals are about 900k. At least on my server RMT doesn't seem so much of a problem. We are constantly beating the RMT teams on HNMs. As far as if you should start the game? I'd say yes, I love it and will probably play it till the day it gets shut down.

                          Re: is it worth it?

I kind of agree with Kutch. At least from my experience on my server, the economy is kind of stale and not very friendly to newcomers. That's not to say the players themselves aren't welcoming.

There will be people playing this game a long time. Considering how masochistic some are in how they simply accept the mechanics SE has given us, if the population starts dwindling, they'll migrate people together on servers to keep things going.

The level grind in FFXI is a little harsher than WoW (so I've been told) and about on the order of EQ2. However, the restrictions on making a working party to actually gain that experience... ugh.

                            Re: is it worth it?

                            Short answer ~ Yes.

Long answer~ It depends on what you are looking for in an MMO. I've been playing for over 2 years now. I've played on a few servers (now narrowed down to 2), I've played all the races to see which I liked and I've never seen level 75 yet. With the taru I recently deleted this summer, I focused more on making gil and leveling mage jobs. Now, I am taking a more relaxed approach to the game and playing it the way I did the console FF games, focusing on storylines and quests which I enjoy a lot more.

The game is only worth it if you find things to enjoy in it. Some people play for the quests and missions, some because they want the best gear, some play for crafting (another activity I highly enjoy) and others play for the challenge of doing things people say they can't. Heck, I've even heard of people who enjoy just leveling jobs for the sake of partying with other people. As long as there is something you enjoy doing in the game, it is always going to be worth it.

                              Re: is it worth it?

Im an xbox360 player, and started playing this game in June. I have logged almost 30 days of playtime, which is something like 720 hours. I was able to do this cuz i basically did nothing all summer, which is no work, no job, only ffxi about 8 hours a day on average. This game is addictive, but it is very fun. You may want to check on how much time you wanna invest in a game that will probably not see a release on another platfrom, like playstation3 or Wii for that matter, and is very old. I do have some gripes with this game that may help you make your decision easier, or at least give you some info.

You will never play just one job. You obviously need at least 2 jobs, because one will be your sub. That said, you wont really know what jobs you will like to play. I have leveled about 6 different jobs thru level 20, and i still dont know what i wanna play. Maybe they all are boring, but ive heard this game doesnt really start till you reach 50, i may never get there.

Finding/making parties is tough when you reach 37 and up. I have only tried this with white mage, a job that is pretty much a necessity to any party, and still have gone days without invites.

Lastly, yes the economy sucks. Luckily i have a Beastmaster leveled to 20, so i can help people with a fight for a fee to make loot, but expect to spend/waste alot of time amounting money to spend on items that people will expect you to have if you are in a party.

That being said... I hope Phantasy Star Universe is good
