i'd quite like one but aren't keen on getting another mule just to get one.

Either start the job as a mnk or buy one off the AH.

Shouldn't cost that much. Check in all 3 start cities and Jueno. I doubt it'll cost more than 4000g.

They generally sell for about 100-200 gil on the AH.

Well all jobs get a starting item, mages get thier first spell, war and thf get swords and daggers, mnks because they use hand to hand dont realy need a weapon so they are given a STR+ waist item insted, i always consider str to be thier main weapon next to thier knuckles.

hmmm always thought the others could all be obtained in other ways though... but looking it up it seems not.
It's not something i've given a lot of thought to before.

So is it...

WAR... Onion sword
WHM... Onion rod and cure (Ex)
BLM... Onion staff and stone (Ex)
RDM... Onion knife and dia (Ex)
MNK... White belt (and no weapon)
THF... Onion dagger

I think Dia is flagged EX too if you start RDM. I remember one of the items was EX.
