  • NM: Bubbly Bernie

Bubbly Bernie, spawned by trading a Quus (fish) to the ??? (at M-10, behind the lighthouse) in South Gustaberg. This NM is of a Crab type, and is level 9-10. It can be soloed by most jobs by Level 13 or so, lower for some. Upon killing it drops a Steam Clock, which is a 100% drop. This is used for the quest "The Cold Light of Day" in Bastok Markets, in the house next to the magic shop.

    1. Talk to Malene.
    2. Obtain a Quus from fishing or the Auction House.
    3. Go to M-10 in South Gustaberg and trade the Quus to the ??? near the lighthouse to spawn Bubbly Bernie.
    4. Kill Bubbly Bernie, and take the Steam Clock it always drops back to Bastok.
    5. Trade the Steam Clock to Malene for your 500 gil reward.
The crab has crab special attacks, but nothing spectacular. It is capable of wiping an entire level 1 alliance. It's estimated to have about 150hp. You can pop it repeatedly with no time limit and kill many more, but it will only drop the Steam Clock again if it isn't in your inventory.

If this is your first time hunting NMs, this makes a very newbie friendly NM to try out before going for others!

(This is not a joke thread. This NM deserves its own thread here. Bless Bubbly Bernie)

Heres a wild thought, get a bunch of Quus and when you are at a nice lvl to solo it and get good exp, Just keep popping it. I havent tried this but seems like a good idea... heh

That works up until about Level 15. I did that, not bad, no competition (although someone did show up once to do the quest. I sat aside and rested HP while he popped it and killed it). It is actually -not- a bad way to get some EXP, although you get nothing but Water Crystals out of it. If gil isn't that much of an issue (Quus aren't that expensive anyway) it's not bad to just stay in that spot and level up.

Faster than dunes levelling, I tell you.

But this is a NM regardless, and is slightly more tougher than the neighouring crabs down the opposite end, but because of the level it isn't that noticable compared to some higher level NMs.

Or bring a Duo of (mage with curing abiltiies) and a WAR. At level 8 or 9, I bet with a yagudo drink or 2 you can get like chain 5 before needing to stop!

I totally thought this was a joke thread about how an alliance will wipe to the great BB. With his massive claw attacks and triple attack always active or something.

You can fish up quus just next to the spawn point with little worms or lugworms for bait. Subbing rdm or whm for dia can help crack through his defence. With food and juice you can take him on around level 6 with either of those subs, though level 7 is better due to the new armour/weapon upgrades avaliable for most jobs at that level.

Damn you! Now I have to organize that lvl1 alliance one day...

Possibly at level 5 you can have a full party (WAR tank) and some mages and other jobs to level off it? It'll be VT I think, 4-5 levels above. Easy fast EXP+chains possible here until level 9 (can you imagine? Chain #50+!). A bit too much work though considering soloing to level 10 is easy anyway. But still, just a thought to try out.

My LS has always talked about the level 1 alliance BB fight but we never have gotten around to it
