Thinking about trying FFXI again, and i'm wondering if theres some sort of online test that can tell me which race i'm most suited for and/or class if theres one.
I think they're is some cheap one floating around, but it all basically boils down to a few things.
What do you want to do in this game?
Heavy damage dealer (if so, with weapons or with magic?)
>Healer
>Support (there's jobs that do a bit of both, and jobs that lean more heavily to one or the other)
Tank, do you like being the one that takes the beating for the party?
Then there's jobs with pets, as well as a job or two that can fill mutliple roles at once (Corsair: some dd, support, and maybe healing depending on subjob)
Basically figure out if you like magic or not, and what basic role you want to play in a party.
Once you have that, you can start limiting it down to which particular job you would most like to play. And the best thing about ffxi is if you don't like one job, just go to your moghouse and change to something else.
I RNG 75 I WAR 37 I NIN 38 I SAM 50 I Woodworking 92+2
And as far as race is concerned, pick the one you like to look at the most or that best represents you. There are few racial differences that can't be overcome with equipment and play style, but the only cure for hating your avatar because you picked it for stats is to delete it and start over.

Ty!
Don't know about any online test sites in particular, but here's something to consider.
Do you enjoy getting in and personally getting into the action? (any Mele damage dealing class)
Do you like controlling the flow monster killing? (Pullers) (Thief, Ranger)
Do you enjoy inflicting large damage from the back of the party without getting near the monster (Blackmage)
Do you enjoy bringing death to your foes primarily through the actions of others (Whitemage, Bard, Redmage)
Do you enjoy getting in the monsters face so they'll leave your friends alone to deliver pain to you (Tanks: ,Paladin, Ninja, Warrior)
Hope this helps and each person will have a slightly different view of what each person should be doing and at what levels so don't be discouraged if some of the advise we give seems to be contradictory experimenting to find out is half the fun.

FFXI timer invaluable during RSE equipment hunts and ofter the best equalizer if your race is a little short statwise for a given job http://www.pyogenes.com/ffxi/timer/v2.html
Personally I subscribe to the "I have to look at this character for a long time, make it so I like what I see" method.
Butt ugly doesn't do it for me - yes, I am shallow.
I can't remember who said this to my friend while ago but:
Player>>Why do you play a girl character when you're a guy? Seems kind of gay to me.
Friend>>Would you rather spend 6 hours a day staring at a guys arse?
As for me, I liked the way Elvaans have elegance and pride. Hume girls look like Skallies who should be drinking Skol and getting knocked up behind their school during lunch, tarutaru are too childish and mithra just seem slutty (plus the majority of the population are male).
Now if they invented some sort of monkey race I'd be all over it.
I agree that the race is more of a choice between what you like visually than stats. Honestly, the difference in stats between races doesn't really matter, an elvaan whm can still be invited to pt just as much as a tarutaru whm.
Just pick a race that you think looks the best and stick with it.
I chose elvaan because I wanted to play as a beast/human character, but when I found out that there was no male mithra (and that the galka looked like pandas ), I decided that the elvaan was the closest to looking like a half-man, half-wolf race (yes I know there elves ).

Are those stat calculations off at 75? Or thats exactly how they are?
OP, you can see the stats, but the only way to know which race/job is the right one for you is playing the game or reading the job forums.
Except for the extremes (like tarus in a no mp tanking job or galkas in a MP intensive job) you'll barely notice the race difference, it's more about looks than anything else.

I agree with you, elvaan girls have monkey-like elegance and pride. But since monkeys, little tarus or cats aren't my thing...
I will always choose a hume girl over any other race, most of the models are really cute and sexy.

Couldn't verify to 75 I seem to keep switching jobs out for another once hitting the 40's range but so far the stat one has been accurate whenever I wrote down the stats for my level and sub then tested it in game against my Elvans stats. (remember its base stats, hp, mp without equipment bonuses and to put down 37 for max subjob when running it through the calculator.) The timer works very well. I used it for planning my RSE hunts until I finished the last one. There are some very dedicated people on both sides of stats exc, does race matter so I won't comment since both sides can get a little carried away other than to say check the site out and let the provided information speak for itself. Also you will spend a lot of time with that image being the 1st thing people you meet ingame see as your persona as well as what you will live with so your characters general looks have some personal impact as well. Just an extra dimension to keep in mind also.
I wish you luck in your Vandiel adventures and hope you have as much fun as I have. I hope your satisfied with your choice regardless of which one and remember job can be changed freely it's only race your truely stuck with for the duration of the character.
BTW I forgot the 2nd link I used for RSE hunting http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/ helped in locating where to find chests and other missions where I had no map.
