What first drew you to playing online games?
Well finding out RPGs had MMOs was an attraction. I started off with EQOA a couple years ago, and moved to FFXI, because I'm a FF addict XD.
Do you play online games purely for fun, or to escape real world problems? for fun of course! many many hours of fun!

How many hours a week would you say you spent on the game?
ehhh well during the summer I have been spending 12 hrs+ a day, this includes afk to go eat, let dog out, etc. Occasionally I get my 8 hrs of ptying in lol.
What is it about the game that evokes a sense of escapism?
Well, I'm not saying I use this game as a tool to escape from real life events, but on the behalf of people who do, I would think that people get the misconception that this game is a similar world to rl, and that's how they live their life, on this game.

Have you had any negative experiences in the game?
Oh plenty, I am hated by tons of people XD, lots of drama for me, but I try to cut down on that because, really I don't have the time anymore lol.

This is my first MMORPG, I wanted to try it purely because I've never played one before and I've heard from friends that it can be pretty fun when you extra time on your hands.

      I play for fun... period.

Because of school and friends I'm usually limited to playing on the weekends, and even then I might not find time to play. I'd say on a good week I can play to around 8-10 hours.

I'm not even gonna answer the escapism question because it blatantly accuses all MMORPG players to be kids with family problems and such, there is such a thing as playing a game for fun you know.

Other than the occasional bad PT, this game is pretty "negative experience" free.

I'm surprised why this thread hasn't been locked, especially since this person is asking for personal information that wouldn't even be needed in a survey like this...

What first drew you to playing online games?
I was drawn to computers at a young age, back then we didn't have these newfangled 3-D MMORPGs. Instead we settled with a text based world, which in ways was more immersive as ropleplaying was standard and your imagination replaced the 3d polygons. As I believe computer games are the highest evolved artform of mankind, I was naturally drawn to online games.

Do you play online games purely for fun, or to escape real world problems?
Not purely for fun, there is a sense of achivement, wonderment, excitement and frustration, there is a whole range of experiences to be had. Fun is a high priority though.

How many hours a week would you say you spent on the game?
        Around 20 hours playing.

What is it about the game that evokes a sense of escapism?
I believe it has less escapism than traditional pen-and-paper gaming, which in ways is more immersive. The real world constantly collides with the fantasy one in FFXI. From 'brb, WC' to your plans for the weekend, much chatter in Vana'diel is not escapism at all, but real world chatroom banter. Still, the game does a marvelous job of sweeping you up with the storyline and transporting you to a distant land, fueled by your imagination. If anything, it's the storyline that gives me a sense of escapism in FFXI.

Have you had any negative experiences in the game?
Naturally, but I've seen so much teamwork, generosity, kindness and good times to make them insignificant.

Theres seems to be a misconception of what escapism into teh game really is...

Its not a way to fix real problems, its an escapism to forget about them for a while and try and relax in a different environment. examples....

            1. You've had an arsehole of a client, who ahs really jacked you off, your stressed and want to relax, instead of draowning your sorrows in beer or comfort eating etc, imersing yourself in this virtual world can help (not everyone).

            2. The same is with me. My job as a firefighter is very stressfull and some of the sights I see will have you runnign for the waste bin and throwing up. its an emotional job, I have the support of the crew we are all best friends (you have to be to cope), I have my Gf to support me but she works in fire control so can be on a night duty so can not be always there. The game for me helps me put my mind somewhere else, my Ls are very accomodating and have often discussed this with me when i have attended a bad incident with fatalities.

            3. On another note the same can be said about people having a crap time at school or bad exam etc and just want to forget it all, the game helps that, its another social extension to the way of modern life.
