    Re: Newb questions!

Level 20 is when you can activate the long, long chocobo license quest (You get to feed a chocobo once a Real-Life Hour for about 4-5 hours @_@ , and no, it doesn't need to be done consecutively, but that's the minimum amount of time).

Each job you want to use a chocobo on has to be at least level 20 for the FULL riding time, which is about 30 minutes. A little while ago, they added the ability to ride chocobos at Level 15, except at that low level, you're not 'experienced' enough with Chocobos, and thus, your riding time is cut in half (or something), and your chocobo kicks you off after a shorter period.

Also, I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not absolutely sure on this, but I think to be able to purchase a choco-ride from the trainer at the Crags (they're buildings that the teleport spells warp you to) of Holla, Mea, and Dem, you have to be like... 25 or 30? ***EDIT: Level 20, thanks Murphie!***

***I knew I've been burned on level difference before, but I wasn't sure on the exact numbers. So yeah, don't go to the crags at level 15 and expect to be able to ride on their chocobos :/ ***

Also ALSO, on the 22nd, there's going to be a major update of the chocobo system to include chocobo raising and breeding. Who knows, they could change how EVERYTHING works, so take that with a grain of salt, and check the forums to check up on new choco-information after the update hits.

I know a lot of posters have advised against starting with WHM. I didn't start with WHM myself. However, I think that playing WHM early on is good for two reasons:

        1) Lots of party invites -> less downtime when leveling
        2) Better understanding of party dynamics, i.e. knowing what you can realistically expect from WHM's if you play a melee job.

Honestly, at lower levels, I would be surprised if WHM is so gimped by not having a subjob as to make it hard to lvl up to 18 for your subjob quest. On the other hand, you will need to be on your toes and very sensitive to the needs of your party, which may not be easy for a newcomer.

*shrug* Most of this game is fun, and I tend to think that the game will naturally push you toward the ideal job for you, because if you don't like the job you're leveling, you probably won't have the patience to keep leveling.

I think the reason most folks don't suggest WHM as an ideal starting job (or at least, the reason I didn't suggest it) isn't because of how hard it is to learn your role in a party, but rather how difficult it can be to get those first 10-12 levels before you party.

Sure, as a veteran player, I know to eat meat and use a hammer, but most starting players are likely to focus on gearing themselves like a mage (club or staff, from what I've seen), and most likely won't eat any food at all. Or if they do, it's cookies, because they're cheap (the cookies, not the players). So they are going to have a considerably more difficult time making their way through the levels when they can't really melee or nuke with any kind of efficiency.

If they insist on starting as a mage, RDM is a far superior choice, at least in terms of soloability, which is key in those early levels. But I still think that WAR or MNK are a better choice in general, as melee have a much easier learning curve to deal with.
