Re: can you solo the assults?
Technically, some can be "soloed", yes. I have "soloed" Lamia No.13 as RDM/BRD.
However, seeing how you need at least 3 people in the party to even be allowed into an Assault, you cannot really solo them for more APs.

Re: can you solo the assults?
A SMN would have a chance of soloing Golden Salvage, aside from the fact that as Fynlar points out, you must have at least 3 people to enter at all.
However, it wouldn't be a very good chance; even with everything going right, you'd see at most half the chests before time ran out, I think. And that's assuming you managed to avoid the fish, which would kill a soloer.
Assault is designed for 3-6 people, just like it says.Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses
RDM90, PLD90, DRG90, COR90, SCH90, BLU54
All Nations Rank 10, ZMs & PMs Complete, AUMs Complete, Captain, Nyzul Floor 100 (5 Weapons, 4 WS), Medal of Altana, WotG Mission 15, 1/3 Addons Complete, 9/9 Abyssea Main Quests, 6/6 Caturae

Re: can you solo the assults?
Actually, you can have a SMN "solo" Golden Salvage quite easily. (You still need two others to get into the mission though.) All you do is blink/stoneskin up (go with the /WHM versions of the spells, no need to whip out Titan and Garuda), summon carby, and run up to a likely candidate chest. The chest will then pop aggro, which aggro's carby onto it, after a hit or two it uses Draw-in on you, and then you just run away until you can't see Carby's hp anymore, and /release him. Wait about 8 seconds for the chest to deaggro, and move onto the next one, refreshing spells if you need to. Takes like 20 minutes, and you don't use juices or foods so long as you have some way of making carbuncle 0 maintenance.
I've found this tactic also works pretty well for getting rid of adds, just use Deodorize on yourself before you /release, and don't hang around in the area once you do so. Mob runs up to the last spot you were, doesn't smell you after that, and provided you're out of sound/sight aggro, it'll wander back where it started from.

Re: can you solo the assults?
SMN or /SMN can very easily solo Golden Salvage. Time is not a factor if you don't dilly-dally the entire time. My Assault linkshell did a tour of Ilrusi Atoll today, and I lead three other people through the mission with Garuda as a WHM60/SMN30.
We were having issues with /SMN's using Carbuncle because our technique would occasionally "glitch" and the Cursed Chest would use Draw In before Carbuncle took hate. Since avatars are at half strength, Carbuncle would die in one hit, and the mob would turn its attention quickly back to you.
I thought of using Garuda today because I didn't want to take any chances. Garuda survives much longer than Carbuncle. She dies in two hits instead of one, and with Aerial Armor up, she can survive a total of five hits, which is more than enough time to run to safety. I was using an Auster's Staff, so Garuda's perpetuation cost was down to 1 MP/tick. If I still had my Vermillion Cloak, she would have been free.
As far as time was concerned, we checked 75% of the chests in the first 20 minutes, and that's taking two minutes to buff and quickly go over the strategy. Getting the remaining few chests should be no problem.
I did notice how Cursed Chests were "blinking out" as they changed modes, and I now know from reading this thread that this was the change to keep people from cheating. There was a BLM on Seraph that one of my linkshell members caught POS hacking through Imperial Agent Rescue. She told her two spare bodies to wait at the entrance and not to follow her. When my friend finally ended up doing the Assault himself and realized it was impossible to do it in less than two minutes without taking damage, he confronted her about it later on before calling a GM.
Her response?
"I was wearing Storm Gambieras, and they have the hidden effect of making the NPC in the first place you look."
She disappeared for a few days during SE's mass third-party ban.
