  • New player, some questions concerning the grind :)

So i started up 2 days ago or so on the Alexander Server, im enjoying my time so far... friendly people everywhere and all the good stuff . Anyways me and 2 others were just hoping to be pointed in a general direction as to what we should do about grinding out the levels. Is there certain quests and such we can follow? Weve been doing a few missions to keep up with that but nothing else really. So how about it? Thanks

Well, unlike other MMOs, Quests don't actually award you any exp (with the exception of a rare few that give you an item that you can use which gives you a bit of exp). So the only way to level up is by fighting monters for EXP.

The most efficient way to do this most of the time is in a six-man party. But there are jobs that manage to do pretty well in a Solo or Duo setting.

Grinding out levels is just a matter of going out and earning the experience points. You don't have to do anything quest-wise to level up until level 50 (at which point you have to clear a level cap increase quest every 5 levels to gain the ability to progress further).

Missions you really won't have to worry too much about until level 25 or so. Do them when you've got time, but they don't actually provide much in terms of tangible benefits until you hit rank 5 (airship access in Jeuno), which probably for most new players doesn't happen until around level 40+.

Most important is to learn the ropes on your chosen job(s). Gain some levels, pay attention, and most importantly - socialize. Those people you form parties with are most likely going to be some of the people you'll be working with later on, in missions, quests, and so forth, and making friends (particularly with veteran players who've got some high level jobs and a lot of experience under their belt who can answer questions or help you out in an emergency) can greatly improve your playing experience.

If all you do is level then yes, the grind will wear on you quickly.

There is plenty you can get started on. Not saying these tasks wont be tedious, but they are things youll have to do eventually. When you get a job to 30 with a proper sub you can start working on the promyvions for CoP.

Between crafting, ranks missions, low level expansion missions, quests, level 30 ballista/brenner... there is plenty to do depending on your preference. As mentioned socializing with these activities will pay off later down the road when when higher end stuff needs larger groups of people.

More players need to take this advice to heart. I don't know how many times I've run into folks who are just rush rush rushing their way through the levels so they can get to the next phase of whatever. And then they get burnt out eventually because the game is (in their eyes) just one big grind. It's sad.

My friend always said that you just need to find some niche in the game that you really enjoy. My schedule was spotty when I first started, and I got really into making money from crafting. Another friend likes completing quests. But even if you really want to grind, you still need to find something to do when you can't get a party and there isn't anything out there to make your own.

QFT. Don't worry about "the grind." Have fun in the game - that's the bottom line.

Re: New player, some questions concerning the grind

i dont know why people call it a "grind" i really like exping. but i also love doing missions. eco-warrior is a quest you can do once a week i think and it gives a little exp and gil. there are also Lv30 ENMs you can do for exp, most of those you can do with 4 people, but getting there will take alot of skill.
i do see alot of people trying to level up as fast as they can. but in the long run you will find it more benaficial to take your time. alot of early CoP missions are level capped, i would recomened doing them at the level you are. so when you get to 30-35 do all the prommys and such, then when you get to 40 try the next mission. this way you wont have to rebuy old gear and play in a way that you have forgotton.
CoP missions do require alot of potions/ethers/drinks etc, so make sure you and everyone else is prepared befor you go. there is alot of info you can readup online about it.

There are plenty of ways to break up the xp grind - be it silly things (level 1 alliance vs Bubbly Bernie), missions, crafting, questing, fishing, farming whatever. Have fun!

Re: New player, some questions concerning the grind

I've only been playing a few weeks (my free month just expired today), but due to moving and what not, haven't been in the game in near 2 weeks. It's "killing" me to see my totally ruling pimp Taru running around again.

Coming from other games where the "end" is where it "begins", don't waste FFXI with that mentality.

I've already had more enjoyment with 15 levels in FFXI: seeing sites, missions, quests, ect than I did in 1.5 years and 3 lvl 60's in WoW. :D
