  • Rainbow Powder: Product Testing

No animals were harmed during this product test... only Empty Monsters and myself....

A poster on Allakhazam reported Imps are affected by Rainbow Powder.

A bit of background. This is a new product using Wamoura Scales and 2x Glass Fiber. (It is Triturable as a double recipe). The powder appears to be similar to Prism Powder in that it grants the effect, Invisible.... However, some tests need to be done as a result of the above poster. There are three basic possibilities. 1) Rainbow Powder is effective on some or all True Sight monsters and 2) Rainbow Powder has a longer duration, 3) The powder prevents other players from targeting you. All will be tested. There is also a hypothesis that, like its counterpart, Prism Powder, it is a reagent in some fireworks. However, if that is the case.... it's really... really... really... lame and disappointing especially since it's 71 skill.

Test #1: VS. Empty Monster (Wanderer) No Sneak Active
Failure; monster saw through the powder.

Sub-test: Area of Effect? Party of 4 standing closely together. Only I was affected. Rainbow Powder is -not- area of effect.

Test #2: VS. Empty Monster (Wanderer) Sneak Active
Failure; monster saw through the powder.

Test #3: Imp on Nashmau Ferry: Sneak + Rainbow Powder
    Success!

Test #4: Caedarva Mire Heraldic Imp: Sneak + Rainbow Powder
    Failure

    and finally,

Test #5: Duration of Rainbow Powder effect
    Total Time: 3 minutes....
The Prism Powder I used directly after this lasted for 4 minutes...

    Test #6: Chocobo Invisibility?
Just for giggles and because much of this update is centered around Chocobo Raising I thought I'd give it a try on Chocobos, just in case you can take you Chocobo into dangerous areas where you (both) might be attacked.... Result? Obviously. "You cannot use that command while riding a Chocobo."

    Conclusion:

Either Rainbow Powder has some useful purpose that I have not tested OR Square-Enix created Rainbow Powder for the sole purpose of using it in some retarded fireworks OR S-E has merely created a higher-level, lower HQ Rate product that is exactly the same as the already existing Prism Powder. If anyone can think of another test that might be worthwhile let me know.

I am, thus far, incredibly upset.

    Cheers,

    Sabaron

What does it do? The description for it is exactly the same as Prism Powders.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Update: I also tested the possibility of one being able to do relatively innocuous things while using the powder, and no, you cannot cast sneak while using it.

I thought of another test though--there isn't a chance that it does this, however, as it would be waaaaaaay too overpowered--duplication of the Hide power in that you can use R.P. while you have an aggressive monster on you and escape.

Any chance it works on multiple people? Like, if you're in a party or something? Just a completely random thought.

It did hide you from the Imp... might it be chance-based on TS mobs? What did the Nashmau Imp con to you?

Good testin, didnt even know this item existed.

                Re: Rainbow Powder: Product Testing

Area of Effect was tested in Promyvion and failed--I had 3 people standing basically right on top of me when I activated the powder.

Both Imps conned IT++(++++++++) to me as I am only 31st level and they are both above 60.

I had considered the possibility that Tonko is to Sight as Rainbow Powder is to True Sight, but don't have the resources to test it since I'm not particularly interested in spending oodles of money on Wamoura Scales and Glass Fiber and getting killed multiple times to figure out that it gives you a reduced detection radius vs. True Sight (or a reduced detection chance) which would be pretty cool, but it would require statistic collection. Basically, I'd have to find the distance that a Wanderer aggros in and then activate powder and dance around him. This would probably take something like 1000 trials at least to do an accurate study at various distances unless it simply proves to be wrong and they just aggro as usual.

Maybe I could just be like the Millionaire's Desk people and advertise that using Rainbow Powder gives you Treasure Hunter II +5%?
