Feeling blah about the game

Okay so here's a warning before I start. This is just a rant. I feel blah and I wanted somehwere to just vent. So if you don't like rants then you probably shouldn't read any further. if you don't like whining, well this post probably won't be for you. because this post is ranty. Having said that if you still read it and want to answer bluntly about it, I won't care. Just letting you know what you're getting yourself into.

Earlier this morning I logged on to do some wind cluster farming for crafting. I happened to check this little blm taru and ran past him, not thinking anything of it. So I left my computer for a bit and came back to this message:

Retardtaru>> What the hell are you looking at you skank?

So I looked at the message for a second, and it took me a moment before I realized I was angry. So I basically responded:

Okay so at this point, he responds, and I basically just got dragged into a 15 minute insult match with some person i didn't even know. Instead of just letting it go and blisting him, I let him get the better of me.

So now I get all emo about it. I think about all the times some butthole has said something to me like that in the game over nothing and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I really feel blah about the game now. I still have a few things I want to do, but just thinking about the game now makes me ill. Should I maybe just take a break? I shouldn't have let the guy get to me, but seeing as it was so easy for him to push my buttons, maybe I've just been playing too much. Or maybe I have issues, I dunno.

Well, you're only human. And the fact that you recognize that it's not something that you're happy with shows that you have more of a grasp on your feelings than you might realize.

I've certainly lost my cool and said stupid things in game. Everyone has. While the best approach is to try and not let that sort of thing get to you, it sometimes will. In those cases, try not to beat yourself up about it, and just get back to enjoying the game.^^

If you feel like you need to take a break from the game, then do that. The worst thing you can do is deny your feelings and try to force yourself to enjoy the game. I'm just starting to play FFXI again after almost a 2 year break (I played WoW during that time which is why it was so long). It's very refreshing to pick up this game again after so long. Also if there's one thing i've learned about MMOs it's that you can't just take a short break, and by short I mean about a week. You need to stop playing and then get to the point where you stop thinking about the game 24/7. When your driving home from work or whatever, and your not thinking about logging into the game when you get home, then your officially on a break from the game.

These games are more addictive than we think, and you tend not to realize your addicted untill you actually take some time away from said game.

I would have responed "I was looking at you since you appear to be a skank on a larger scale than I am, just curious to see what one looked like" or some other smartass remark.

People are really tough sitting behind a console or pc. People in general are asses sometimes. My advice would be to shrug it off, its over with now.

That is understandable, take a break if you feel like it. I was on a two year break, same as the above poster. It is needed at times.

I usually laugh off some of the random insults for stupid things, thinking/knowing they are just a 12yo (physically or just mentally). Yet not always.

I do get pissed off if someone in a party (the leader) kicks me out after I run half way across the game world (we all know that takes a while). Usually just log for an hour, watch TV. Later I would come back to Jeuno, Flag Up and look for an invite while crafting/watching a movie on my little portable DVD.

So, in short... You are not alone.

People suck. period. Take a little break, maybe start a console game up? or play another game with some friends for a bit. Everyone needs a break once in a while.

That way, you feel like you've gotten the last word, and you won't ever hear anything from him again (thus avoiding a potential 15 minute insult fest).

Sometimes I wish there was an age 30 and above server. Think of how civil and enjoyable everyone as a whole would be. Nobody trying to show off with their smart remarks in shouts. No cutsie tells that came from undeveloped minds - lol. Life would be good. But alas, I play a computer game for pete's sake - what do I expect? I can wish can't I? Lol.

Heheh, you gotta remember something, having a fight from time to time is a good thing, it helps us vent stuff we have bottled up inside. The taru had an easy time dragging you into a fight becuase you felt like yelling back, and there's nothing wrong about it.

Most of the time we can assimilate emotions fairly easy, but there are times when we just need a good fight, that's it, nothing deep about it. I'm sure next time you find another moron like that you'll just laugh and blist him.

Beautifully put. Know you're not alone. We've all succumbed to some random idiot and had a verbal sparring match. I've done it so many times.
After it's over I think to myself, "I'm 30+, an adult, pay a mortgage, have a job and a life.....why do I even bother with these creepy angry people...Next time I'll ignore them!!!!"

Bah! Phooey! It never happens. I know it leaves a sick taste in your mouth and ruins the dazzle and wonderment of the game with jerks like that. Just know, he's probably an arse to everyone he comes into contact with and is a miserable bastard in game and in RL.

Rent a DVD tonight, order in a pizza, invite a friend or sit with the dog, and relax tonight. Come back tomorrow. It'll be ok.

People are stupid in real life and in the game (moreso in the game because of the anonymity factor, but really this just amplifies already stupid people into aggresively stupid people).

The trick to being happy in the game, as in real life, is to "not let it get you down."

There's a couple ways to handle it, some of which have been mentioned in this thread, in order of worst to best:

1. Let it get to you

2. Stoop to their level and insult them back, resulting in a shouting match where both people end up hurt (or, at best, an insult match that might come off as witty when viewed the right way, but is, in the end, empty).

3. Laugh it off and ignore them

4. Empathize and recognize that the person has social problems and/or just went through something bad and is taking it out on you.

5. Empathize so much that you don't feel hurt, insulted or anything like that. In fact, you recognize it for what it really is, and want to help that person. You are able to step outside of your ego and free yourself from egotistical emotions, and you want to free the attacker as well.

4 and 5 probably requires a few hours a daily of mediation and buddhist studies, but they are still the best. Personally I fluctuate between 1 and 3, depending on my mood, but I shoot for something like 3.5.

In the end, I don't think it's worth quitting over, but sometimes you need a break (I never needed one from the people, but from the game mechanics, namely NM camping burning me out).

But you're probably not looking for any of that. You probably just wanted a place to vent and some sympathetic replies, in which case I read your post, I can relate, and I'm sorry it happened to you. Don't sweat it too much, there's still some good people in this game.
