Hardly, since most users of the windower wont use SE's unless it had all those other little plugins as well.

Simply doing something because the masses want it is the fastest way to create a a giant pile of crap. I wouldn't trust most gamers to tell me the sky was blue.

It's alot like the MP3/file piracy debate:

1. People like to be able to shar personal files with friends, but it is difficult to do so without a tool to help you. (What people want)

2. Along comes Napster/Kazaa/whatever. This tool is designed to help folks share their personal files easily by taking care of all the complicated-techy crap for you. (The tool)

3. Sharing tool becomes used to share files that the users don't have the rights to. (What actually happens)

< FFXI >

1. People would like windowed mode to check internet, AIM, have full use of their PCs. (What people want)

2. Along comes Windower, which allows folks to do the above. (The tool)

3. Folks develop/use plug-ins for windower that allow them to more easily hack/cheat in FFXI. (What actually happens)

Now I KNOW that not everyone uses windower to cheat... in fact you've repeatedly beat this point into the ground. BUT- some folks DO use it to cheat, THUS making it a problem for SE. Just like some folks use Kazaa to pirate songs, it makes a problem for artists/labels. SE has to do something to protect their interests, their interests being a happy fan-base. And in their eyes, less cheaters makes happier-fans, and happier fans continue to pay $12.95 a month to play their game.

Also for the folks who say SE interferes with your ability to check your AIM, your email, whatever, shut up, because it does not. You simply have to log out of FF, and then you can do whatever the hell you want. It does not, as some have said, prevent the "full use of their PCs".

FOR THE RECORD:

I think windowed mode would be nice, but I can see why SE doesn't allow it.

I don't like where this is going, I don't like WoW or any "modern" MMORPGs, and I definitely don't like the impact bad and lazy players, gilsellers, gilbuyers and exploit hackers are having on the game's design.

I would hate seeing SE becoming another MMOG developer with a WoW/gilseller mentality of "let's get as much money as we can out of this before it implodes by it's own flaws".

But if in the end a game it's gonna end the same way as they say D2 ended then what's the point?

I guess it's time to start thinking about going back to single player games.

Good point!

So many folks don't realize what it takes to run a game. They just scream and whine like little children "I WANT MORE AND I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!"

I trust the masses about as far as I can throw them. A lot of folks just don't know what good for them, and hate to hear about it.

Well you can search around and eventually find a reason under the 3rd party aspect why programs like Fraps would be illegal. They are but more under the terms that the image or film does not have the proper copyrights. All images and visuals in the game is property of SE so when you use a program like Fraps you are basically stealing it.

Now any photo's and such used in a contest automatically become sanctioned because they are by SE's consent. Say you took a picture of something you wanted to use against SE to ruin them (If you find something to that quality), since it won't have SE's copyright that is stolen. If you attempted to attack SE with it they'd just sue your @** for copyright infringment.

Might damage them (unlikely since no copyright on it makes that photo pretty useless for that) but they'll damage you more. Otherwise any photo's taken that are not by SE's own screen capture tool built in it is essentially illegal to the same quality of taking artwork from an artist without consent.

Otherwise as far as actions taken you can see SE forming some set lines, much like the legal system has. They have a soft line saying you cross this you are doing something illegal, then they have a hard line saying you cross this and you will be banned. In-between those two lines is were you often hear a lot about players having a GM call backfire on them, that's the grey area which is handled by each GMs disscretion.

Ok, I finaly started reading the boards again after a few months and I just had to respond to this post.
First: Zamphire, I comend you on haveing the currage to admit that you hacked and you were wrong for it and defending the windower.

Second: A quote from the Rules of Conduct [Last updated: July 22, 2005]
"Prohibited Conduct in Final Fantasy XI"
-Using third party equipment and/or programs for controlling in-game characters without being phisically present in front of the game terminal (i.e. useing "bots")

Latter on under "Absentee Play" the ToS say that players should be at the terminal to respond to GMs and to stop their actions. From what I make of it, I think that botting (like fish botting) as long as you are at your computer to respond to GM request.

Third: Most of the hacks currently out (including TParty plugin for the windower) exist because of the crapy codeing that SE did (why do you need to have other pt members TP info in your computer's memory)

If SE fixed some of the holes in the PC version of the game (yes I know it will take several man-hours and alot of money) so that PoS and FleeTool are no longer possible then I would be more then for them to not do a content update once.

Edit: I just checked the hack site I know of and everyone on there is goning "WTF OMG I IS BANED!!!! Wah wah wah" At least SE were able to scare them shit-less :p

To your third point, reason for the code design is speed. Outside of information such as messages it's easier to just send a single flat file out to everyone instead of individualizing the data.

In a zone were you have say 20 people individualizing isn't a problem you end up with the system essentially creating 400 records. In an area though with 100+ this starts to become very taxing on the system now having to create 10,000 records. Performance starts to degrade the higher you go doing this.

But if you create 1 single flat file sent to everyone then 20 people and system makes 20 records, 100 people and system makes 100 records. Much smaller and much faster.

I just got off the phone with SE, fucking bull shit I tell you. After waiting 45 min again they answer, I tell him I'm having problems logging in, he asks for my POL ID, name on account, credit card info, registration code, and address. I gave him EVERYTHING except address. Apparently I entered a fake address when I created the account because it's not even in my state and I've never left the state. He goes "Without that address we can't give you any info" I ask if there's anyway I can change the address he says "Well, yea if you log... wait you can't log in" and i'm like, no shit. So I ask him if he could just tell me why I can't log in and he said he can't release any information until I give him the address. Basically he tells me I'm fucked that there's nothing I can do except cancle the account. I told him I'd wait a day or two and call back >.> Fucking SE. I'd really just like to know for sure if i'm perma banned or not. If I am I want to go get WoW and start plkaying.

Dude, that's regular process if the guy told you without giving him everything requested as standard procedure his job would be on the line. It's part of the Privacy Policies, if you put in a bogus address you skrewed yourself.
