Re: This is why you don't give beggers gil

JRLCrist: It's nice to see people in the FFXI Online community actually helping others who are in need of it. The economics in the world of FFXI are very realistic in that if you don't take the right approaches to making money, then you'll suffer. I've gotten help from people like you and I seem to be doing pretty good, even for a level 12 BLM. And in return I helped out someone who just started out, and it's such a great feeling. He /tells me letting me know of his progress. Good for you and keep up the good work ^_^

Re: This is why you don't give beggers gil

We were all new at one time or another, and being a part of such a big community, there are obviously those who couldn't give a moogle's whisker about new players. Heck, we've all faced them. Some people even stop playing because of that first negative impression. Then there's always the few and the proud who shine light on the world of FFXI and actually show them and teach them what they seek. It's those people like us who really make up the FFXI community, and I'm glad to see that there are people yet who will still take into consideration the feelings and difficulties of the new players. All the more power to you and to our community. Keep it up, all ^^

I used to beg.... But then some guy just got tired of me asking him so he told me how to synth Beeswax, which sells for about 60k a stack, on Asura. I've been loaded ever since, especially with the HQ results. :D

No, I do not have a life.

Being a new player, I've been offered charity already, in my first night of playing. Declining, I want to start out on the same ground as everyone else. Quite frankly I think it's sort of embarrassing...it almost shows that you lack the experience to go out and get the money yourself.

And this post better be worth it, as I just died from stupid poison while typing this.

I don't think there's any shame in excepting charity when your starting out. Begging is something different, but if someone just offers you gil or equip, you can take it. It probably means nothing to them and probably will mean quite alot to you.

Oh, and a tip, don't fight mobs that can poison you solo. The main problem mobs are lizards as they can poison AND petrify you, both of which will probably kill you if you don't have antidote (petrify will probably just kill you). I think you get poisona at lvl 7 maybe, so at that point it's ok to solo on them (not lizards but other mobs that can poison), but avoid them until then.

Ah, thanks for the advice Hamlet

And I caved and accepted a friend of mine's offer to give me some beginner armor. Nothing special, just the stuff that you buy from the merchant that gives you a few extra defense points. I look so cool now!!!

Perhaps my post came off the wrong way...I think if other players are offering and such, it's okay. Not begging though, that's embarrassing. Even still I don't like charity...I feel like I owe the person- and I do intend on paying my friend back for this armor.

Seeing this made me think about a strange law in the city I live in. In Mobile you can go down to the courthouse and pay $10 bucks and get a perment to panhandle. If the cops see you out begging all you have to do is show them your perment and they will leave you alone. You see them allaround all the interstate exits.

I simply ignore beggars. I want to send them a message that you have to earn gil by yourself, not from getting it from other peeps with zero effort. If those beggars want to keep it up, I simply add them to my blacklist. Beggars don't deserve a cent of my time.

Re: This is why you don't give beggers gil

The problem can be that, if someone is given money-making help but ignores it, players can become jaded with regards to giving help. I got sick of a few people I knew who complained constantly that they lacked money to buy X item; I tried to introduce them to crafting, farming, gardening, and fishing, and while some people took notice and acted on advice, a few didn't, and just carried on complaining, leeching off their linkshells, and begging. I wrote a guide to making gil at low-levels for my old LS, based on my own experiences making the better part of 1 million gil without having a job beyond level 20. The only people who bothered to read it and reply were people who already knew how to make money, and offered further tips. I'm happy to try and help people, but please, don't ignore the advice given.
