I just bought a netplay keyboard/ps2 controller and was wondering if by configuring the buttons this would elimnate any need for macros? They look rather confusing...if I still need to use macros could someone please explain them to me and exactly how to make one? Thanks a bunch!!

    Re: quick macro question...

Let me see if i can get this right as a newb.

When setting up a macro there are different "fields" for information.
THe top most is for a Name, I'm overly original on mine: cure cure2, banish, blindna, stone ect, as I said i'm "original".

Now for the command section, there are every things you can put in these lines.

/ma - magic ability - used for casting spells
/ja - job abilty, used for well job abilities
    /ws - weapon skills
/wait # - the # is a number, the macro will wait that many seconds before going to the next line.
/item - use items or open item list
/equip - wear or swap equipment
/echo - this will feed information back to you, only you see it.

There are different ways to target them as well.
<t> - will preform the macro on your current target
<stpc> - this will bring up a subtarget (blue targeting arrow) allowing you to select Player Characters
<stnpc> - same as above but with NPC's instead of Players.
    <lastst> - last targeted subtarget

I'm sure there are more, but I haven't got to those myself yet.

    Example of my cure macro:

    Cure
    /ma Cure <stpc>
    /echo curing <lastst>

You can also do things like my new macro

    Rest
    /item "Gingerbread Cookie" <me>
    /wait 3
    /heal

    I also have
    EXP
    /equip ring1 "Empress Band"
    /wait 30
    /item "Empress Band" <me>
    /wait 5
    /equip ring1 "Saintly Ring"

Thanks. Yeah, I'm a newb too-don't even have the game yet, I ordered it off walmart.com-and I basically suck at all things computer. I'm probably annoying everyone with my barrage of questions on other posts. Do you use your keyboard & mouse or a pc controller?

You're still going to need to set up macros for your character. There isn't any way to avoid that entirely. Using the controller, you'll access your macros via the trigger buttons on your controller (unless you configure things differently), and while it might be a bit confusing at first, I'm sure it will eventually become second nature to you.

FFXI's macro system is ridiculously simplistic. While it might seem daunting at first, it really isn't, I promise.

            Re: quick macro question...

I use my keyboard exclusively, i've tried the mouse, found it mostly worthless. After the first day I was very comfortable with moving my character with the keyboard.

The hardest part for me, is trying to remember that if i press just 1 through 0, it assumes I want to type the number, and macros are alt or ctrl #.

But it doesn't take long to pick up at all.
I'm so used to keyboard now (after 2 weeks) i've changed my mind for getting controllers for our laptops for when we travel, to just buying and extra usb keyboard (or numpad) for the laptops. :D

(I've only been playing 2 weeks, if you have any questions I'll be on AIM after 6pm CST) feel free to shoot me a message.

Listen to Aelathir! He has made my transition into FFXI painless. Dude knows his shit.

Also, quickly on macro's, you have to capitalize just as the skill or item is, this includes ' and other characters. If a skill or item is multiple words, you have to encase it in quotes.

That new keyboard you got doesn't have the ability to "set up macros" on it. They all have to be set up in-game.

There IS a keyboard that DOES allow you to do so, and I want it! It has has keys that light up if you are playing in the dark! :D Too bad it's not wireless though...

I want that G15 as well. Personally, I'm glad it's not wireless, because I always forget to keep extra batteries around.

I really like it though. Now to justify a $99 purchase.

Yah, I've played with it at Best Buy, and the keys feel soft as well. :D

                    Re: quick macro question...

                    I won't spend 100 bucks on a keyboard.

But the G15 will also let you "display" in game information on that screen, like party health. :D

Does it work with FFXI like that? I don't know anyone that has it to confirm one way or the other. But I like the added macro buttons, mostly.

It works for WoW, why wouldn't it work for FFXI?

I'm referring specifically to the LCD display. It doesn't work for every game. I know that SE was kind of recommending it to players at Fan Fest, so I was curious if the LCD screen had any functionality with FFXI.

I know that the macro keys work, of course.

I think it has "profiles" in the drivers for various games. (Like the new nforce drivers have), unfortunely ffxi doesn't us AA or AF so there is no ffxi profile.

but i would assume the G15 has a profile that will let you pull up in game info on that screen.

I can do a search for some and see what i find :D

                            EDIT:

this is what is offically supported by the G15, after readin this list, I'm thinking the Saitek is a better purchase.
