  • Who's smart idia was this?

ToAU came out. User bought it. Userthen later relized it is in dvd format. User cried cause their computer has something against dvds. User tried to find cd format, finds out it's only dvd. User cried some more.

So far up until this point, all the expansions have been in cd-form. Now, they go and do dvd form...with no option for cd format. This means for people who's computers don't read dvd's, it means they will need to buy a dvd reader or a new computer that dous read dvd's and reinstall the entire game which they probably don't have. So far, I am very angry at SE for making it so I have to miss out on a great exping zone because of their poor buisness choices. So far only thing I have found use out of my copy is to hold the rest of the ffxi cds until I can install it and register.

Who';s brilliant idia at SE was this? If they had to make a dvd format, make a cd on for people who have cranky computers. Oh, and is it possible for me to convert the dvd into a cd?

(While I'm off ranting, anyone notice how that people set their hp to whitegate, but the warp taru to get back to jueno is never there? Kinda crazy if you ask me... )

This is not a poor business choice on SE's part. It's 2006. DVDs have been out for a long time, and you can get a very inexpensive DVD Drive for your PC, thus solving your problem. The Vana'diel Collection is also on DVD, so this is something that they have been doing for at least two years now.

If for whatever reason you are unable/unwilling to purchase a DVD drive for your PC, you could, I suppose find a download of it somewhere that you could then use your registration codes for. Either that, or if your PC is on a network you could install it on a PC that does have a DVD drive and transfer it over, but it sounds like that is probably not the case.

(And the free warp taru might not be there, but they can always use the one that you pay for.)

It's not a money issue, it's more like "the closest electronics store is 70 miles(aka a very long drive) away from where I live. So simply getting the game was a pain, and now I need to go back, be told they will install the dvd player into the computer, go home, bring the computer, be told it will take 3 days, have it extended, have the computer break 4 days later, want to kill someone...Pretty much what happens every time I get something added to my computer(not a fun experience overall)

You can just get an external DVD drive for your PC and hook it up yourself. Shouldn't be too difficult, really. Honestly, getting one is as good thing. Most anything these days is coming out in DVD format. It's very handy.

          A. The box clearly says PC DVD-ROM on it.
          B. Progress should stop because some people don't live in a city?
          C. If it's such a pain to have others do work on your system, you could learn to do it yourself.
          D. I really hope you're not paying someone to do something that would take you 15 minutes to do.

Re: Who's smart idia was this?

Since you already have the game, you have the codes needed. You could just look up a Bit Torrent site and download an ISO of ToUA and then use Daemon Tools or something to "Mount" the image and install it that way.

Though depending on your network connection, it could possibly take you longer to download than go to the store.

Unforantly, I do not think I'm allowed to give links to torrent sites since links to the FFXI Windower are not even allowed.

I had 2 friends do this already. One who also didn't have a DVD player, and another who lost his RoZ disc somehow.

                    try order it online?
Or if you have fast internet connectiong you can always search for torrents I guess. And install right from the image.

It's dvd format on all the sites I checked, no cd. I'll probaly check the store and get a dvd reader...probaly have them plug the wires in and stuff since last time I did that I caused the motherboard to melt. (litterally...)

Re: Who's smart idia was this?

DVD drives are really inexpensive and simple to install compared to practically everything else in your computer. As Aelathir said, you could get an external one and just plug it into a USB port or whatever and never open the box.

CDs are getting left behind as a data storage medium. I don't know if you're part of the generation that would remember installing programs from a small tower of floppy discs, but that's essentially what's happening to CD. If it wasn't SE forcing you to upgrade now, it'd be someone else eventually.

It sucks that it's such a pain for you to get electronics and support where you live. I'd suggest moving if your computer is an important part of your life. Personally, I wouldn't live anywhere that didn't have broadband anymore if I had a choice in the matter.

On a tangent, ever notice how, especially in "hardcore" circles, little attention is given to the regular processor, video card, and RAM upgrades that are practically required to be able to play new games at an acceptable level, but whenever a publisher decides to make a DVD-only push, someone will inevitably bitch and moan about having to upgrade their CD-ROM? No offense intended to the OP, but this conversation went around my old workplace a few times. The same guys that will post to wave their $600 video card in people's faces will throw a fit about the injustice of X developer/publisher "forcing" them to upgrade their hardware. Wtf?

Hm...is there really a difference betwee the external and the internal one minus where it goes?
(and yeah, I do remember those fun floppy disks...cd's were just coming around)

Yes internal drives will cost less and be faster due to the limatations of usb interface, external drives will be much quicker to install and could have other uses.

It will take a long time but allot of on line dealers still take checks and money orders if you dont like buying stuff online with your creditcard.

Personally I wish all pc games would move to dvd's. The last pc game I bought was on 6cd's, so just use it as an excuse to buy a dvd burner they can be bought for less them 40 dollars.

(I still have a 3.5 floppy drive in my pc, 2006 and they are still needed sometimes)

Anyway, not to be rude, but get with the century. This is like complaining that a band is only releasing their music on CD, not LPs or tapes. It's not like SE is asking for anything special. My PC is a few years old, and it has a DVDrom. Most PCs capable of playing FFXI should have a a DVD-Rom from the start, and it's not SE's fault for taking advantage of that to make our lives easier.
