Here's one of mine (please note i'm new to ffxi)
Leaping Lizzy... The first NM I ever hunted.
I'm an all or nothing kind of person, and when I found out about lizzy, she became my obsession. I read every guide, forum and blog i could find to get tips on camping her. Then I started the camping, every chance I got. Quickly i became discouraged, seeing level 75's hanging around her camp, asking why they were there, and getting answers like: "0/15", "0/25", "0/42"...
What encouraged me however, was the fact that I was telling these players who clearly had a lot more experience with these kinds of things the tricks to spawning her (some would say bad idea, I figure helping anyone who's 50 lvls higher than me could have some advantages). I got my first claim on either the first or second night, beating out 3-4 people, though I was the only one camping when I started so I didn't feel bad. No drop, and I had beat out a thief (i'm a THF too).
Low and behold, the next day i'm out with a friend, when this THF I had beat to claim the night before shows up. Turns out he was coming along to do whatever we were doing. As soon as I see him, he says "hey, your the guy who beat me on lizzy last night" and I was like "yeah" with a slight grin on my face. He says "yeah i waited another 1.5 hrs, and got claim!... check out my new boots". My heart sank as I checked him, and saw the bounding boots.
Now it was on... i HAD to get them.
So again, every night I could, i'd camp, sometimes get claim, sometimes get beat, but the boots refused to drop. So one night, my friend (who I static with, who also wanted/needed boots) says we should go camp lizzy. I was 0/6, maybe 0/8... but of course I said ok. We head out, only ones there, and camp for 2 hours. No lizzy. I kept looking for PH around the corner because my research had indicated that PH could pop there sometimes. After 2 hours of killing lizards and not even seeing the NM, my friend says he's had enough, and logs off. Knowing she HAD to pop soon, I stayed. Not 2 minutes after he leaves... she pops.
You obtain "Bounding Boots".
O.M.F.G. I got the boots. O.M.F.G my friend is gonna be pissed. (He was probably 0/8 or so as well). So the next day i'm on voice chat with him, and i'm like "dude, i got lizzy soon as you left last night... and... um... she dropped the boots. I know a small part of him died when I said that, but he's a tough sob. He logs in, right where he had logged the night before, at lizzy. Of course I offered to help him, I felt bad, so he starts the tedious practice of killing lizzy's. I grab a bird and meet him at lizzy camp 10 minutes later. Within 30 min or so, she pops... we claim... and she drops the boots!!!! We both couldn't stop laughing... all the pain... all the frustration, it was all worth it in the end.
I realize this NM is pretty trivial, not much to brag about... but to a couple of noobs, it was like winning the lottery. That's my story.
