Dilemma for potential future FFXI player...

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about picking up FFXI again, but I have a bit of a problem. I am sorta wierd in the fact that I like to be a unique class usually. Y'know, something that's a challenge and that not many put the time into. This sometimes gimps me out...erm, but that's not the point

The point is, I was wondering what classes are overplayed and which classes are least played? In other words, I'm wanting to hear some recommendations. In previous games, I've played Priest (WoW), Druid (EQ), Bard (DAoC), etc...I want something with versatility and/or damage. Not really looking to play healer again :\. Also, as you can probably tell, I'm savvy to casters. The RDM looked pretty cool to me, but I'm sorta afraid that I'd be just one of the many.

So I'm looking for some advice. Or comments. Or you can make fun of me . Just want some responses on this because I'm bored and feel like talking about FFXI .

Take a look at this extract from the latest census. It should help you decide on which job you may want to play, however, this will vary by server so you may want to choose a server first then ask in the relevant forum for advice.

Thanks a bunch, was trying to find something similar to this. I really like the idea of taking SMN as an advanced job, and I'm thinking of going BLM or RDM to start...any suggestions?

I suppose if you want SMN the easiest way I guess would be to level Black Mage to level 18, complete the Subjob quest and switch to White Mage and level that until level 37 then take summoner all the way to 75 with white mage as sub job. WHM is arguably the best subjob for a summoner.

If I may, why's that? I'm not too knowledgeable on the whole sync between subjobs and such. If you could elaborate, that'd be great

Summoners basicly opperate by casting a summon, using that summons Blood Pact, and then releasing the sumon until the blood pact is ready again. This leaves about a minute of downtime before the summoner can do anything useful. If you use white mage as a sob job, that allows you to assist the white mage by curing and removing status ailments on your party members.

Using black mage as a support job is "gimped" because your damage output is greatly reduced (because black mage would be half the level of the mob you are fighting). White mage as a sub job does not suffer from this because your healing magic, while lower, can't be constantly resisted by your party members, etc.

Ooh, I gotcha. So SMN/WHM is a pretty good combo?

Interesting. As far as race goes then, would Taru Taru be a wise decision, or Hume? And also, are there a lot of SMN/WHM's out there?

For the most part "all" summoners are SMN/WHM. Right now on my server there are 2241 people logged in. Only 60 of those are SMN. All of them are SMN/WHM.

Hume and Taru are both good for SMN.

I'm new also Tivul, I couldn't wait to start, and as I sit here at work, i can't wait for 6am CST for my weekend to start to get to playing again. :D

I'd say the most overplayed would be Ninja or SAM, but maybe thats just because I don't particularly enjoy those. THe most under played would have to be corsair, puppetmaster, or summoner.
