It also lets me know who to expect the next dumb question to come in from /tell. After a check, almost always I receive one of two kinds of /tells afterward, "You have gilz, please spare some for noob." or "How do you trigger latents on your gear?" Knowing who's checking gives me a heads up on the next beggar or snoop.

No, I haven't given any gil to people who have done this. They progressively get louder in their /tells, saying "Yo".... wtf, "Yo"? Going to really convince me you deserve the gil talking like that.

Yes, I've tried to be friendly and answer questions about latents, but usually the snoop doesn't understand. One remarked that they wanted to get a Guady Harness on their DRK cause it would really help them out.... again... wtf?

If somebody checks me too much I tell them to take a picture, that's all.

Gee, are people who aren't even high enough level to be in HNMLSs so retarded and full of themselves that they post opinions about things they have no experience with?

Walk a mile in my shoes before you judge.

HNMLSs operate on a trust-and-be-trusted basis. You have to, because everything you do requires the cooperation of many players, so people who are immature, insecure, untrustworthy, or anti-social in other respects/get on the nerves of too many other players are poison.

While excessive checking doesn't, by itself, consititute a horrible character flaw, it usually accompanies other unpleasant character traits which generally make people unfit to join a good HNMLS.

When it comes down to judging an application to join an HNMLS, it is the impression you give to other players that will make or break you, and deliberately attempting to annoy every player you meet is not going to put you in good standing when the commentary flows in about your application.

It doesn't matter what you think about checking. It's what other players think, since they're the ones with the veto power to blackball your attempt to join an LS.

Re: Hello, My Name is Kaithran...

I think it's kind of amusing that I made a statement about people wanting to get angry about being checked, and then along come a few folks that drive that point home.

Check me all day and night. Check me multiple times in a row. Check my gear, check my bazaar message, check my title, whatever. I won't know, and I certainly won't care. My gear isn't a secret. If SE wanted me to be able to hide my gear they would make it so /anon hid that too.

Oh noes, someone checked me. Let me get all worked up about absolutely nothing at all.

I should note that I couldn't care less whether people know what I'm wearing or not. That's not my intention at all.

I use the check messages as a tool to judge the maturity level of people I meet. If someone checks me and asks an intelligent question about how to acquire a specific item or how much an item costs, I'm more than happy to oblige if I have time to explain. If on the other hand they make derogatory or even clueless observations about my gear, I'll know to avoid dealing with them in the future.

I check people the same job as me because I'm intrested in their choose of gear, especially as a blu. I sometime check people who wear strange gear. Personally I could care less someone checks me but I like to have the notification on. What really annoys me is the Player has entered your bazaar message, I can't seem to turn it off without turning of check notification though.

Don't worry, I am not trying to be obnoxious. It's a habit I can't break. I don't even think before I hit the ctr+c. And when I see BLMs, I try very VERY hard not to check them if they have no bazaar or flag, but I'm not always able to control myself.

Has anyone else had this sort of "problem?" It'd be nice if I weren't alone here!
Oh wow. . . that describes me perfectly XD I cant seem to stop checking bazaars, who's LFG, or sometimes just to see what a person's wearing or their lvl. /comfort, You're not alone ^^b

If that's the system that works for you, fantastic. Your initial post on the subject in this thread wasn't nearly as clear, and was far more grumpy. I judge a person's general maturity level by how they work in a party situation, or how they respond to general conversation. But going by what they say after they check me is certainly another way of going about it.

That said, I still don't care how often people check me. The less superfluous messages flying through my chatbox the better.

Sorry for the lateness of this post, but there was something I want to address.

07-03-2006 11:55 AM Yes, you are obnoxious
First, I would like to say that I do NOT go around checking people for no reason.

I do NOT check over and over.

I do NOT check you if you don't have a flag/bazaar, under most circumstances.

If I DO check you without a flag/bazaar, it is a compliment to your gear and I'm ooo-ing and ahhhh-ing over it. I do NOT do this often, nor repeatedly.

I am not an obnoxious person.

If you have a flag up, prepare to be checked because there could be a bazaar hiding under there.

If you have a bazaar, you sure as hell better expect to be checked.

If you're in my PT and get mad at me for checking you, there is something wrong with your gear 99 times out of 100.

When I first started playing, it was at the NA release. We didn't know that /checking was rude at first; It was just a way to see what the game was all about. We wanted to learn more about people who had been where we were going. Now, I know what's out there, and I check: 1) to see what you're selling, 2) to see IF you're selling, 3) to see if you are up to PTing, or 4) to see the Godly gear I drool over once in a while.

I am woman enough to come out in the open and say, "This is me, this is who I am and how I act." If you want to rate me down and criticize me, do it with your name attached instead of hiding in anonymity. I will not rate YOU down, because it's just an opinion and those can't hurt me.

Since your on Ramuh, I'm going to check you every time I run past . I'm joking, but no, I do the same.

I don't particularly care if someone has a problem with me checking higher DRKs than me to see their equipment, or if someone are wearing some piece of flashy equipment in general that I want to see, if they dont like it, there is an option for them called the black list.

I remember playing EQ and folks would get rather annoyed with others checking. Can't figure out why...my easy solution to this was asking if folks minded me checking . I didn't do it too often, though...until WoW came about, I check people left and right now

Am I the only one that smells a bit of hipocrisy? What drives me nuts are not the people that do this or do that, but the people that will try to find a justification even if there isn't a need for it.

Checking is a common thing, it's there and it exists. I only wish SE made it like Blizzard did in WOW where you won't get any message at all. There must be a reason why a programmer put it in place because I sure as hell think they could save a few strings of coding to omit the message completely... maybe even keep a player lagging out from multiple /check messages from other players simultaneously.

If I check someone to see their level, wind out looking over their gear, and close the window AND THEN remember I forgot to get their level, I'll probably /check again. So you could consider that 'multiple checking'. I don't. I consider that a 'whoopsie'.

However, there is a line between "oops forgot to look at ...." and /check X 500. Someone can forget to look at something without spamming the check function the way some annoying noobs do.

Config >> Chat filters >> Check level 1 notice (turn it on). Mission accomplished.

If you lag out from too many /check notices...you must be wearing judge's gear in lower jenuo. And if you're wearing judges gear in lower jenuo, it's quite possible the lag is just normal lower jenuo lag and nobody really cares about your gear.

I guess YOU've never forgotten whether or not you checked someone in PT before. And I suppose people in your PTs never carry multiple sets of gear or change jobs for tele-purposes.

Yes, people in HNMLSs sometimes tend to (not always) become full of themselves, I've known several people that used to have fun with the game and be an enjoyable person later on to take the game way too seriously and have thier head stuck up thier butts. If you become annoyed by checking turn off the filter. If you blist or avoid someone cuz they checked you, you ARE an elitest asshat. If nothing else, you should see it as a compliment if it is a random check from a stranger somewhere. However, it is understandable for you to be upset at someone if they are checking you to spam your screen or just be an overall jerk.

I have, and I'm judging. I've been able to join HNMLSs for a long time (and have a few but left because I'm not a fan of HNMLSs, but I still have quite a bit of nice gear from when I did Dynamis (some Duelist/Cleric gear), or just from gil (Noble, Gueispiere), Missions (tho it is mostly invis stuff like Tamas Ring and Magnetic Earring), Quests (Carbuncle Pole for example), or just NMs from playing a long time (Astral Shield), which get me checked quite a bit).
