    Re: why must people hate

To hell with what the haters think. BTW I've read of female players making male characters just because they didn't wanna get hit on. Just remember it's a game, not an online dating service.

A lot of people play a gender that isn't their RL one. Ignore idiots.

        Re: why must people hate

Smart people won't hold your character gender against you one way or the other.

I tend to refer to people I meet in FFXI as their character's gender (he/she), until they say something like "I'm a guy, stop calling me she," which is understandable. It's just easier for me to associate gender conversationally based on the avatar.

Do I think it's wrong to want to be called by your RL gender? Nope. Some people like others to know.

Do I think it's wrong to want to roleplay as your character gender? Again, nope, unless you're doing so solely for the flirtation perks (free items/money, stringing along horny, sad people). That's just not cool.

I'm male, and play a male Elvaan, but I admit I like running around as my Mithra mule every now and again, because man, Elvaans can be just so uptight-seeming sometimes! (Probably because of the RSE-Wedgie-Pants (TM)... seriously, look at them, they're so constraining in that.... area! ).

But when I come across Female characters, I don't go "Omigosh, a hot 18-24 year old female must play that character! *pant pant*" . Neither do I go "Oh man, that mithra's gotta be a guy, so he's a perv!" Instead I see "Nice person," "Rude Person," "Friendly person," and so forth. If they want to say their gender, that's fine.

So in short (too late), play whatever makes you happy. Some people like to play someone that matches themselves, some people like total opposites, some people like to play handsome or pretty looking characters, some like powerful looking or tough characters. And sometimes, gender just plain isn't a factor.

There's a mithra named Willcyberforgil on my server.
I'm going to consider that WP from RunningDemon now.

                  Re: why must people hate

                  lol, I love it.

If someone says "boobies" or "perv."
Then say "____ is 12. Did your mommy sign you up?"

If you're a taru then "Did your Mommy-wommy sign you uppy-wuppy?"

Then eveyone will laugh (yes everyone laugh because it helps). And the child will be properly scolded.

In your bazzaar you can put "Manthra." I've also seen, "I'm not a girl, please don't hit on me."

Young people are often very aware of their age it seems when they play a game like this so, drawing attention to it will often show them how to grow up.

Similarly, I find in game like this if someone is being annoyingly lewd and immature, you can tell them they are and if they continue...

Then you give them a sensual description of the proper techniques for "romancing a boobie."

                    Re: why must people hate

In my LS on Ramuh, most of the mithras are guys. I think only myself and one other that play as Mithra really are girls. Does it matter about the gender of the player behind the pixels? Nope. I judge a person I meet in the game based on how well they play, how up to date they keep their gear, and how friendly they are.

Don't let the people looking for hot pixel on pixel action get you down. Play the race/gender you choose for whatever reasons you want. After 2yrs of playing a taru, I chose to replace her with a mithra because I wanted something to look at that was pleasing to my eye. Yes, I'm a female and artistically speaking, women are nicer to look at then men. Sorry guys.

                      Re: why must people hate

Off the top of my head, I know two male mithras in my LS, both good people. One of them is a klutz, always getting in trouble because of his impatience and general persona. He can be very inconsiderate at times without even thinking about it, but I don't really *think* he means it. My other friend is quite possibly one of the smartest people in the LS, always helping everyone out and is generally a great source of knowledge when it comes to summoning and black magic. He also has organized quite many LS mission runs and whatnot, which is something to be proud of since we're a lowly social shell filled with nuts.

My point is, they're both guys playing mithras, and at this point... I can't really see them any other way. It's fitting, you know? As long as you can be attached to the character you create, that's what matters most.

                        Re: why must people hate

I started off playing an elvan male, but got tired quick of him because it seemed boring to play. It was actually seeing a Mithra in RDM AF gear come by that made we want to play that race. And I haven't regretted it yet. Sure, I get those folks that ask if I am really a guy and I don't lie about it; I just tell them straight up. Because frankly, like many have said...this is a game and we can chose to play whatever race / gender we want.

I have seen that character running around. I thought that was a cute name, considering he is a taru. Guess big things do come in small packages (sorry, couldn't resist that joke).

I have a female friend who plays as a Hume male for that very reason. But you never hear about female players getting grief from other players for not playing female characters.

There's 4 females in my HNMLS. Two of them are mithra, one of them is a hume female, and one is an elvaan male (O.O; ). We have one Manthra, and about 4 Hume Females that are guys. I guess it's a weird spread, but hey, nobody really cares in my LS, lol.

I play a female character just because I feel weird being in a 'male body'. My mule is hume male, and every time Im on him I get the urge to scratch myself...

                            j/k

But the point is, it's a matter of comfort. Some men aren't comfortable with staring at a manly butt covered only by a little armor thong, and I can rather understand that. Others aren't comfortable with being asked "Is it that time of the month for you?" when they play a female character.

In then end, there's no way to know anytihng about a person besides what shows through the screen, and that's not a whole lot.

I never got asked that. Thankfully? I guess. I haven't seen any armor thongs either, so I guess that's a good thing. Not that I'd care one way or the other (I'd just switch the dat out for something I actually liked on my character).

I used to be in an all Mithra static. Only two of our group were real girls.

You know what I find ironic. This is a massively multi-player ROLEPLAYING GAME. Yet when someone plays the role of a mithra and is a guy or any guy chooses a girl they are hated yet they are doing what the game is about. Playing the role is different than lieing and saying your a girl. Playing the role means you tell them you are a guy. Anyway I wanted to point the irony of being hated for playing a role in a roleplaying game.
