Re: Patience: worth a try after all

Patience? I don't have time for that crap.

Seriously though, I'm glad it turned out like that. I sometimes have to catch myself when I start inwardly griping about the play style of people I'm grouped with (or comiserating with other members) and remember that if I keep quiet, things have little chance of improving.

Many people (especially early on) are surprisingly open to advice if it's presented in a friendly and helpful manner.^^

Although your situation turned out great, not everyone at yhoat and yuhtunga tends to listen. When I had to lvl my war there, I not only had to teach my pt how to skillchain, but I literally gave all my melee sole sushi to eat because I wanted to get out of this area as quickly as possible. Then at the end, I got called a "know-it-all" for trying to expedite our xp progress and for handing out free food. Go figure.

Well, that's exactly why we spent three hours not giving the guy much advice at all, and why his reaction was such a pleasant surprise. I've been conditioned to expect a bad reaction. The fact that it's gotten itself that far under my skin bothers me, though.

I actually tried to focus on timing after reading this post and after getting used to it, with mandies, if you start casting ichi as he lands his first hit, you should have no problems getting interupted (you finish right before his next 2 hits). Early hits during casting do not seem to interupt. I think crits and specials might still interupt, however.

Re: Patience: worth a try after all

I've duo'd with my wife so many times as MNK/NIN + RDM/WHM that I've got quite the nack of timing the start of Utsusemi: Ichi so I can guarantee it will not get interrupted.

However on most mobs this can only be done if the mob is slowed, so I always ask for that enfeeble first, even before hasting me. Crabs and Crawlers have a slightly different gap between their hits, and it can take a few hits to get your mental timing sorted.

If there is more than 20% on the Ichi casting meter and the mob hits me (so I've had to start ichi before I see the attack animation) then I've failed and I pray for a miss or a paralyse to kick in. The biggest pain is when the mob does a TP action like metalic body, it throws your timing to the wolves and I normally either risk it or wait for it to hit me again so I can time it better.

All that goes out of the window though with fast attacking mobs like the collibri in the new areas, with those I just have to hope paraylse or a miss kicks in while I'm casting.

I've been playing NIN a lot lately, and I've found that the Law of Utsusemi is that the mob that previously missed you several times (thankfully spreading your shadows out a bit) will critically hit you one if not several times the moment your shadows drop. It's good times.

That sounds a lot like the Law of Paralyze.

Re: Patience: worth a try after all

We've all had all those negative reactions when we try and help out others, and you probably waste a lot of time being patient (hence don't like to do it).

You just did an excellent thing though. Later parties will be blessed with a competent ninja (assuming they remember everything, which is likely). Not only that but the ninja will not have to deal with the complete jerks who have the opposite of patience and LOVE to exercise it on the ignorant. It is likely you saved this player, and a lot of other players a lot of time and happiness.

(^_^) Well done. Glad you stuck it out.

                      They are closely related, yes.
