  • General Merit Questions

There isn't a guide, to my knowledge, and I have questions about Merits that are not apparent or obvious as I play. (This thread can be for any questions that people have about Merits, btw).

    My immediate question is this:

How are merits applied throughout other jobs?

For instance, how much of my capped evasion (+8 skill at 75) am I getting from a job in the 30s?

I'm guessing there are incriments, similar to the CoP level rings, such that the different levels are something like 30, 45, 60 and 75. But then again, I'm not sure.

    Anyone know?

    Re: General Merit Questions

As far as I know, Merits are applied to any job of yours over level 30.

      Re: General Merit Questions

I believe they are applied on a graduated scale starting at level 10. Say you have maxed (8) merits in a category. At level 10, you'd have 1. At 20, you'd have 2, etc.

        New Question

Once you reach 75, how do you achieve and choose merits? I'm sure I've heard some talk of it before, but no one has really made it clear to me.

Evasion is 2 points of skill for every 1 upgrade that costs 1,2,3,3 merits at each level.

At level 10 you would get the 1st upgrade (+2 Evasion Skill), at level 20 you would have 2 (+4 Evasion Skill), at level 30 you would have 3 upgrades for a total of +6 Evasion Skill.

              Sorry missed your question

Once you hit 75 you can visit Maat and his Moogle and you can then be offered the options to go from "xp mode" to "merit mode", if you do not you will automatically switch to "merit mode" when you cap your xp for level 75

Choosing the merits are done in your mog house, so you go out and "merit" (10,000 experience points = 1 merit point) and choose upgrades which can each have different costs.

Combat skills (weapons) are available to all jobs but you will only be able to upgrade the ones you have skill in (i.e. no Katanna Upgrades for BLM).

Merit Costs for combat for example are 1 merit for the 1st level upgrade, 2 merits for the 2nd and 3 thereafter up to a total of 8 for one (weapon) class or 12 for the category.

                  Re: General Merit Questions

                  oh! Sorry!

Another thing not often mentioned is if for example you have two level 75 jobs (let's take a stab at some cliche jobs) i.e. Dragoon and Bard.

*disclaimer* I have only one job to 75 and can't double check it but I think this is correct.

Well for some reason you like Dragoon but finding a pickup merit party on it may not be easy, well then you can play Bard to get Merit Points but spend them as Dragoon. You can however only gather 10 Merit points before you must spend them.

                    Re: General Merit Questions

That's right, Levish. I've gotten about 80%-90% of my merits on WHM, but I spend it on anything but WHM, including SMN specific merits.

                      Re: General Merit Questions

Merit points can be spent on any category that you can currently access, and are not linked to the job that earned them. However, you must be able to access the upgrade you'd like to get with at least one of your available level 75 jobs:

The categories you can access while inside your mog house are:

                      > HP/MP: All
                      > Other: All
                      > Combat skills: Any skill that your currently set main job has by itself.*
                      > Magic skills: Any skill that your currently set main job has by itself.*
                      > Job specific merits: Any trait for your currently set job.

                      * Note that your currently set job must be level 75 to even access the Merit menu, and that any skills you want to upgrade must be possessed natively by your current level 75 job.

So if you have Bard and Dragoon at level 75, you can earn merit points on Bard, switch to Dragoon, and spend merit points on Dragoon-specific things like Jump recast. You can also choose to switch to Dragoon and spend points on Polearm skill.

However, you cannot spend points on Elemental or Katana skill since neither of your level 75 jobs has that skill natively.
