Re: JP players hate being checked

Personally I dont think that much of it, some people says its rude and in that case they should just filter checks. I check people if I see armor they have that I want to find out what it is, whats wrong with that? Normally if they emote /panic or something I just send them a /tell saying I just wanted to see what equip they had because it looked cool etc But then you do get those noobish players that insist on spamming you with /checks. I can understand that that could annoy most players. All the Jps I've met dont care anymore than any other player but I got told that it does say '<player> stares at you intently' but they know enough that it doesnt say that in all the versions and infact that player isnt staring at them intently. I mean, obviously you think they'd just use /stare if they were

Re: JP players hate being checked

Well, I think /check once is okay. But most of the NA players that /check me /check me 5 times in 2 seconds. Now that's ******* annoying and deserves a /blist add in my book (Sux2bu when the time comes around for Genkai and AF help)

Re: JP players hate being checked

I am not sure about hating, but I play Japan primetime, and I have never ever gotten /checked by Japanese party members (or passer-by's) without them asking if it is okay to do so first. Even my Japanese friends ask first before /checking.

It is just their tradition. (Like starting and ending quest - mission - LS recruitment related /shouts with "excuse me")

For starters if he was in your party you had every right to check him. It gives you information on what kind of skillchains he can join as well as knowing if you have a half-naken player in your pt or if you have one with halfdecient equipment. It's also advantagious when judging who is a better equiped tank regarding primary and backup among other things. I don';t have the best gear, but I go pting in stuff that I won't feel embarised by a check in if a pt member was offended by being checked he/she probably felt his gear was subpar and didn't wish you to notice it.. Additionally if someone has a Bazar up they also have no business complaining about being checked since you have to in order to check what they're selling.

Personally I think some people just love to play the victim no matter how silly the reason. If I don't feel like seeing the check notification I'll check the box in chat filters to hid those notices. If you see me on Garuda server feel free to check me just preaty please when checking people don't send a tell asking if it's ok. This defeats the purpose of the filter. (often I leave it on and /em poses for his fans :+D) If I send a tell regarding a check it's either to compliment the cool gear or ask if it's questable anywhere.

Still, god knows why SE would make a line like that in the game if it is indeed true.
Its very hard to transliterate English and Japanese so 'stares at you intently' would probably be pretty close to 'examines you'.

It depends weither its put in a negative perspective or not aswell.

I personally just try not to stir up any crap. Unless it's people that I know for sure don't care (LS mates) I just don't check them. I will check them if they have a bazaar but that's about it. If I want to check someone (especially JP players) I will send them a /tell asking them if it is okay. I have never been told no and they usually seem to be very glad I was considerate and asked first.

Re: JP players hate being checked

Here is some insight why people don't like being checked. Sometimes people like to offer helpful "advice" like "Why don't you buy the +1 set, it's so much better?" or "You really need an Emperor's Hairpin." How many times does that need to happen before you develop an aversion to /check?

And if you turn on the filter so you don't see the message, you still can get the comments (good or bad) about your gear but now you can be confused how he knows what you've got. (You may forget you applied the filter.)

To those who say "it is only a game" or "don't be uptight" I hope you apply that same philosophy to yourself when someone shows up with gimp gear or subjob. If it is only a game then don't get uptight about slow xp.

If someone has a belief that /check is bad and you don't respect that belief then don't complain when someone does not respect your beliefs regarding over camping or gil selling.

Eh.... I don't care about being checked, and I'll check my tank, people with bazaars up, or anybody with neat-looking gear.

Not quite the same league, eh? /check hasn't ruined my exp or made me waste hours farming yet. And more importantly, if you /check your party's tank and see that he or she is wearing utter crap, you've just saved yourself some time and frustration.

SE should never have included check notices - it just creates opportunities for people to get upset over nothing.

for all you who say it's no big deal or stupid to get upset, understand that it is a cultural thing. You don't have to "get" why, just respect the fact that it pisses them off and don't do it.

However I've seen many people who asume for instance that US culture is universal, and get really shocked when they find out many things they take as a "everyone knows" kinda thing only apply to a very small percentage of the people in the world.

Every country (and even every city) have their own set of cultural rules, things that are normal and harmless in one culture can be extremely rude in another.

If you remember the Last Samurai, there's a perfect example of this.

When Algren didn't want to introduce himself after being captured, Katsumoto told him that they both didnt understand each other, and that for instance how in japanese culture not introducing yourself was extremely rude even among enemies. Whereas name wasn't such a big deal for americans.

Re: JP players hate being checked

I'm not Japanese but seriously the longer I play this the game more I despise people examining me. You know how irritating as hell it is when people examine your gear and try to conform you to what they invision as the best setup.

It's even more annoying when got damn newbies thinking they know your job better and trying to force you to conform to their ideals. Some of them are stubborn as hell that even when you prove your setup is very good and that you are capable of using it with beyond exceptional abilities, they still think you'd be better in a different method.

Outside of that I can't tell you how many times I've been pestered by players trying to get me to give up either my Selene's Bow or E-Bow. Damn even had a player pestering me for my Amemet Mantle +1, all this BS is why now when I do bazzar I stash away my good gear so when they check me they won't be pestering me trying to get items that are part of my equipment set and not for them.

Outside of this part of Japanese hating it is a little bit of this, but also unlike many American's seems to realize MMO's in other countries since before they were actually MMO's, but earlier versions called MUDs and MOOs there was a set etiquette of how you interact with people developed well back then.

The etiquette's described proper methods of claiming camps, proper method of hunting quest type mobs, proper use of communcation channels, proper message compiling and grammar setup (Basically not always using CAPS and such), proper introductions, proper methods of finding out what another possesses, proper method of requesting help, proper length of time for repeating requests, etc....

There is a TON of pre-defined etiquette that existed well before the current form of MMO's. Much of these which other countries follow very closesly with only a very small number of bad apples that didn't. Much like though how the American school system only really requires you to know English, not using the Metric system as a standard, hates copycats (Don't consider if flattery), and can't ever seem to admit their mistakes all of which being so opposite in the idea of etiquette they often choose to defy as well.

This debate about the JP not liking being examined has been explained here hundreds of times. Just search and you'll find it, with how frequent it's been stated and how it's still debated just shows that US probably will never change to see the good in those etiquette. Chivalry died in the US so why wouldn't this etiquette follow the same path right?

That's the kind of things that get you a reputation as a jerk and land you in some blacklists.

FFXI is a community with people from various cultures. To get along with people from a different cultural background, it is important to respect other's customes, even if you cannot understand them.

The "If you don't live the way I do, I will pick on you until you do" approach doesn't really work well.
